To better provide quality-of-service (QoS) for WLAN users, we in this paper propose an improved scheme called “A-EDCA”(adaptive EDCA), based on enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) of IEEE 802.11e under the infrastructure mode. Our proposed scheme aims at efficiently adapting the transmission over WLAN to the time-varying network conditions and mitigating the competition ability unfairness between access point (AP) and non-AP stations (STAs). Specifically, all non-AP STAs adaptive-ly modify the contention window based on the network condition. Moreover, AP skips the backoff phase by setting its backoff counter as zero when non-AP STA completes transmission successfully to relieve the unfairness. At last, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.展开更多

Different from most previous analytical studies based on the saturation assumption, we extend the analytical model to non-saturation conditions. An empty state is introduced into the Markov chain to represent the status of transmission queue being empty. This model can be used to calculate the traffic priority, throughput, and MAC layer delay with various configurations of contention parameters. A detailed simulation is provided to validate the proposed model. With the help of this model, the contention parameters can be configured appropriately to achieve specific quality-of-service (QoS) requirements.展开更多

Based on the MAC layer protocol, this paper analyzes the QoS in IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol framework, and proposes a new design of a Differentiation Enhanced Adaptive EDCA (enhanced distribution channel access) approach. The proposed approach adjusts the window zooming dynamically according to the collision rate in sending data frames, makes random offset, and further distinguishes the competition parameters of the data frames that have the same priority, so as to reduce the conflict among the data frames, and improve the channel utilization. Experiments with different service cases were conducted. The simulation results show that: comparing with the conventional EDCA method, the proposed approach can ensure that high priority services are sent with priority, and the overall QoS is highly improved.展开更多
