The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and relationships and consider impli- cations for development of clonal forestry. We assessed growth traits, stem-branch characteristics, crown diameter and height of fresh branch for 20 Eucalyptus hybrid clones in China measured at the age of 44 months. Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in growth traits, height of fresh branch and stem straightness among clones. Significant differences in height, volume, crown diameter, height of fresh branch and branch size among replicates were also recorded. Coefficients of vari- ation ranged from 9.84 to 28.54 % for growth traits, 12.03 to 17.25 % for stem-branch characteristics, 18.26 % for crown diameter and 11.73 % for height of fresh branch. Estimates of repeatabilities for height, diameter at breastheight over bark, volume, crown diameter, height of fresh branch, stem straightness and branch size at clone mean level were 0.86, 0.80, 0.80, 0.54, 0.85, 0.77 and 0.44 respectively. Diameter at breast height over bark and height had strongly positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations with volume, ranging from 0.96 to 1.00. The positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations between growth traits and other studied traits suggested that fast growing clones always had bigger crown diameter, higher height of fresh branch, straighter stems and relatively smaller branches.展开更多

In particular, flowers of Eucalyptus cladocalyx provide a nectar source for the production of honey in arid ecosystems. To identify inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers that are associated with early flowering and flower abundance in the southern Atacama Desert, we used a sample of 47 trees, representing five Australian prove- nances of E. cladocalyx. A unified mixed linear model (which considered the effect of genetic structure and the kinship relationship among trees) revealed that three loci were significantly associated with early flowering, which accounted for 10-16 % of the phenotypic variation, while two loci accounted for 11-13 % in flowering intensity. Locus ISO1-500 bp was associated with both flowering traits. This result is consistent with our previous findings indicating that marker-assisted selection on early flowering should have significant and positive impact on flowering intensity. The application of marker-assisted selection to identify trees that flower early and intensively may increase honey production, a resource that generates additional income for the local farmers of the southern Atacama Desert.展开更多

The runoff volumes of Eucalyptus plantations and P. massoniana forest natural watersheds were continuously monitored using the small watershed runoff monitoring method and the automatic data collection devices from August,2013 to December,2016,and effects of heavy rainfall and continuous rainfall on the runoff process were studied. Results showed that the annual runoff coefficient of Eucalyptus plantations natural watershed was 0. 050,and 55. 4% lower than P. massoniana forest( 0. 112),with the difference being significant( P 〈 0. 01). Total runoff duration, time of maximum runoff lagging behind rainfall peak, and runoff duration caused by a heavy rainfall process( amounting to 147. 5 mm) between the two kinds of forest watersheds were significant different, those of Eucalyptus plantations were 35. 6 mm,0. 2 h and 13. 8 h,respectively, while those of P. massoniana forest were28. 5 mm,0. 7 h and 35. 5 h,respectively. Eucalyptus plantations natural watershed produced only 4-days runoff, and runoff depth amounted to3. 8 mm with a 7-days continuous precipitation process of rainfall with 125. 0 mm,while P. massoniana forest natural watershed produced continuously 13-days runoff, and the runoff depth was 10. 1 mm. In conclusion, water conservation capacity of Eucalyptus plantations is obviously lower than P. massoniana forest.展开更多

Modelling the dynamics of even-aged and mono-species stands is a very active research topic. The approaches adopted by researchers vary according to the objectives and species considered: dendrometrical, Eco physiological or architectural. Thanks to the particular nature of these plantations and the trial set-up, it will be possible to explore the various aspects of production, clearly separating the part linked to genetics (three clones tested) from the part linked to the environment (via fertilisation) and the part associated with competition between trees (via planting densities and thinning regimes). This study will make a major contribution to the applicability of the self-thinning line and the RDI (Reineke Density Index) (Reineke, 1933) to fast-growing plantations. This research work will contribute to two points: 1) product diversification, which is a way of coping with international variations in timber markets, and 2) understanding how ecosystems function in exceptionally poor conditions, which will then enable the environmental impacts of the various recommended silvicultural itineraries to be assessed. The results obtained show that competition between trees in a stand of eucalyptus at very high density (10,000 stems/ha) and in two environments of very contrasting fertility is different depending on the clone. The decision on the date of the first thinning with a view to silviculture for timber and energy wood, which aims to ensure sustained and sustainable production of eucalyptus wood in these soils, should be taken between 12 and 14 months. The competition band is strong between 14 and 17 months, when the RDI = 0.8 is double that observed at 12 months.展开更多

This study aimed at developing cost-effective methods for applying PMo as the first stage bleaching for eucalyptus kraft pulp and evaluating their impact on pulp properties and effluent quality in relation to current ECF bleaching techniques. The PMo(EP)DP and A/PMo(EP)DP sequences proved to be most cost-effective for PMo stage application. The pulp properties and effluent quality derived from bleaching with these two sequences were compared with those of the conventional bleaching with the DHT(EP)DP sequence. The PMo(EP)DP sequence produced pulp of refinability and physical properties similar to that of the reference but the A/PMo(EP)DP one resulted in pulp of 20% lower refinability and 10% lower tearing strength. Untreated effluents of the PMo(EP)DP and A/PMo(EP)DP sequences presented similar COD, but lower AOX and color than the DHT(EP)DP effluents. None of the effluents exhibited acute toxicity. The effluents from the PMo(EP)DP sequence showed much lower BOD and BOD/COD ratio than that of the A/PMo(EP)DP one. All effluents were readily treated in bench-scale reactors, and achieved COD removal efficiencies of greater than 70%.展开更多

With the advent of forest plantations, growing environment conditions have become increasingly restrictive for light, soil nutrients, and interactions between trees to acquire available resources. Tree biomass data are essential for understanding the forest carbon cycle and plant adaptations to the environment. The distribution of tree biomass depends on the sum of multiple stand conditions. The data are from a dedicated experiment with two very contrasting areas of fertility, and two planting densities, including a high density at planting in order to achieve thinning. The plant material consists of the high-performance clones of Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis and the reference clone E. PF1. We hypothesize that the distribution of biomass changes as the intensity of competition changes and that this is accelerated by the fertility of the sites in time. The results indicate that fertilization, planting density and clones have an impact on biomass partitioning.展开更多

Soil ploughing can affect the availability of nutrients and water resources, and its effect can be short, medium or long-term. Soil ploughing accelerates surface heating and air circulation and encourages mineralisation by transforming organic matter into mineral salts, making nutrients soluble and accessible to plants. The aim of this study is to determine how soil ploughing affects the distribution of nutrients in the soil profile. The study focuses on nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, which are major elements of soil fertility on the Batéké plateaux in Congo. The results indicate that ploughing significantly modifies the distribution at depth des elements nutritifs: there is more accumulation at the surface than at depth (ei: nitrogen 1.34 t/ha ± 0.035 at 10 cm compared with 1.034 t/ha ± 0.098 at 50 cm) with a higher concentration of carbon (13.89 t/ha ± 0.87) followed by nitrogen (1.34 t/ha ± 0.035).展开更多

The single young and mature leaf area estimation models of eucalyptus were developed based on leaf fresh weight. In total, leaf area and leaf weight were measured from 455 fresh leaves of 25 trees of eucalyptus in southern China. The majority of the data (80%) were used for model calibration, and the remaining data (20%) were used for model validation. The linear, compound and power models were tested. Based on goodness of fit, prediction ability and residual performance, we found that linear and power models could best describe the relationship between leaf area and weight for young leaf and mature leaf, respectively. The study provides a simple and reliable method for estimating single-leaf area, which has a good potential in the functional- structural model of eucalyptus.展开更多

Ho...Radial variation in sap flux density (SFD) as a function of sapwood thickness is of importance in accurately estimating sap flux through sapwood area which, in turn, decides the precision of heat pulse application. However, until now, only a few studies have evaluated the magnitude and significance of sampling errors associated with radial gradients in SFD, which were based on the small monitoring measurement data from a few trees. Based on one year of heat pulse observation of two 3 - 4 years old Eucalyptus urophylla S. T.,P Blake plantations in Leizhou Peninsula, Guangdong Province, China, a way of data processing was developed to treat with the lots of SFD data measured from 39 trees. It was found that the radial variation in SFD as a function of sapwood thickness in the two eucalyptus plantation sites could be expressed as y = 3. 667 5x(3) - 7.295 5x(2) + 3.682 6x + 0. 567 4 (R-2 = 0. 939 1, n = 80, P = 0.01), where y is the ratio of SFD of a sensor to the average of four data in different depths, x is the ratio of a sensor depth to tire radial sapwood thickness. It was the same (as in the following equation) in Jijia site, y = 5.006 2x(3) - 9.116 1x(2) + 4. 454 4x + 0.463 4 (R-2 = 0. 806 9, n = 72, P = 0.01) in Hetou site. From cambium to heartwood, SFD showed some increases at first and then decreases continuously. However, because die trees were very young, the maximum SFD was only 0. 33 - 0. 36 times more than the minimum.展开更多

Results indicated that the mean value ranged from 9.44 to 15.41 mm for Pilodyn penetration, 0.3514 to 0.4913 g.cm^-3 for wood basic density, and 3.94 to 7.53 Giga Pascal (GPa) for MoE, respectively. There were significant differences (1% level) in pilodyn penetration between different treatments, different directions and among the clones. Generally strongly negative correlations were found between pilodyn penetration and wood properties, and the coefficients ranged from -0,433 to -0,755. Our results, together with other studies, suggest that the use of pilodyn for assessing wood density and MoE was confirmed as a possibility.展开更多

文摘Acid hydrogen peroxide catalyzed with molybdenum (PMo stage) is effective to decrease pulp kappa number and potentially minimize chlorine dioxide demand in subsequent ECF bleaching. All effluents were readily treated in bench-scale reactors, and achieved COD removal efficiencies of greater than 70%.

文摘Typhoons are becoming frequent and intense with ongoing climate change, threatening ecological security and healthy forest development in coastal areas.Eucalyptus of a predominant introduced species in southern China, faces significant growth challenges because of typhoon. Therefore,it is vital to investigate the variation of related traits and select superior breeding materials for genetic improvement.Variance, genetic parameter, and correlation analyses were carried out on wind damage indices and eight wood proper-ties in 88 families from 11 provenances of 10-year-old Euca-lyptus camaldulensis. The selection index equation was used for evaluating multiple traits and selecting superior prov-enances and family lines as future breeding material. The results show that all traits were highly significantly differ-ent at provenance and family levels, with the wind damage index having the highest coefficient of genetic variation. The heritability of each trait ranged from 0.48 to 0.87,with the wind damage index, lignin and hemicellulose contents, and microfibril angle having the highest heritabilities. The wind damage index had a positive genetic correlation with wood density,a negative correlation with lignin content,a negative phenotypic correlation and a negative genetic correlation with microfibril angle.Wind damage index and genetic progress in the selection of eight wood traits varied from 7.2%to 614.8%.Three provenances and 12 superior families were selected. The genetic gains of the wind damage index were 10.2%and 33.9%for provenances and families, and these may be starting material for genetic modification for wind resistance in eucalyptus and for their dissemination to typhoon-prone coastal areas of southern China.
文摘Afforestation and reforestation are useful approaches to improve carbon sequestration. The results indicate that fertilization, planting density and clones have an impact on biomass partitioning.
文摘Soil ploughing is an important stage in the preparation of planting, causing disturbance to the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. The results indicate that ploughing significantly modifies the distribution at depth des elements nutritifs: there is more accumulation at the surface than at depth (ei: nitrogen 1.34 t/ha ± 0.035 at 10 cm compared with 1.034 t/ha ± 0.098 at 50 cm) with a higher concentration of carbon (13.89 t/ha ± 0.87) followed by nitrogen (1.34 t/ha ± 0.035).
文摘Leaf area is an important parameter for modeling tree growth and physiological processes of trees. The study provides a simple and reliable method for estimating single-leaf area, which has a good potential in the functional- structural model of eucalyptus.
文摘Radial variation in sap flux density (SFD) as a function of sapwood thickness is of importance in accurately estimating sap flux through sapwood area which, in turn, decides the precision of heat pulse application. However, because die trees were very young, the maximum SFD was only 0. 33 - 0. 36 times more than the minimum.

文摘The effectiveness of pilodyn was tested in evaluating wood basic density, outer wood density, heartwood density, and modulus of elasticity (MoE) at 22 four-year-old eucalyptus clones in Guangxi, China. Our results, together with other studies, suggest that the use of pilodyn for assessing wood density and MoE was confirmed as a possibility.

文摘This study was conducted to investigate the distribution and accumulation of major elements of 5-year-old Eucalyptus grandis forests with the densities of 556 trees/hm2 and 1 667 trees/hm2. The results showed that: (1) The distribution of ma- jor nutrient element contents in various organs of the E. grandis with the 2 densi- ties was nearly the same, and the ranked order was leaf〉tree trunk〉branch or branchlet〉fruit〉bark. (2) From the distribution of nutrient elements and organic mat- ter in the trunk, P, K, Mg and Ca contents presented basically a trend of increasing with the trunk height increasing. And the organic matter content increased with the trunk height increasing in the low density stand, while the result was opposite in the high density stand. Furthermore, N content increased with the trunk height increas- ing in the low density stand, but the content in the high density stand exhibited a trend of decreasing at first, increasing then and increasing at the last. (3) From the distribution of biomass, the ranked order was tree trunk〉bark or branch〉branchlet〉 leaf〉fruit. And (4) The accumulated amounts of major nutrient elements in various organs under the 2 stand densities was nearly same. Ca content was the highest in the 2 kinds of plantations, followed by N, K, Mg and P contents. Ca content was 601.78 kg/hm2 in the low density stand and 1 204. 43 kg/hm2 in the high density stand.
