Real-time prediction of excavation-induced displacement of retaining pile during the deep excavation process is crucial for construction safety. This paper proposes a modified back analysis method with multi-objective optimization procedure, which enables a real-time prediction of horizontal displacement of retaining pile during construction. As opposed to the traditional stage-by-stage back analysis, time series monitoring data till the current excavation stage are utilized to form a multi-objective function. Then, the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is applied for parameter identification. The optimized model parameters are immediately adopted to predict the excavation-induced pile deformation in the continuous construction stages. To achieve efficient parameter optimization and real-time prediction of system behavior, the back propagation neural network (BPNN) is established to substitute the finite element model, which is further implemented together with MOPSO for automatic operation. The proposed approach is applied in the Taihu tunnel excavation project, where the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated via the comparisons with the site monitoring data. The method is reliable with a prediction accuracy of more than 90%.Moreover,different optimization algorithms, including non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II),Pareto Envelope-based Selection Algorithm II (PESA-II) and MOPSO,are compared, and their influences on the prediction accuracy at different excavation stages are studied. The results show that MOPSO has the best performance for high dimensional optimization task. 展开更多

The Fort d’Issy-Vanves-Clamart(FIVC)braced excavation in France is analyzed to provide insights into the geotechnical serviceability assessment of excavations at great depth within deterministic and probabilistic frameworks. The FIVC excavation is excavated at 32 m below the ground surface in Parisian sedimentary basin and a plane-strain finite element analysis is implemented to examine the wall deflections and ground surface settlements.A stochastic finite element method based on the polynomial chaos Kriging metamodel(MSFEM)is then proposed for the probabilistic analyses.Comparisons with field measurements and former studies are carried out.Several academic cases are then conducted to investigate the great-depth excavation stability regarding the maximum horizontal wall deflection and maximum ground surface settlement. The results indicate that the proposed MSFEM is effective for probabilistic analyses and can provide useful insights for the excavation design and construction.A sensitivity analysis for seven considered random parameters is then implemented. The soil friction angle at the excavation bottom layer is the most significant one for design. The soil-wall interaction effects on the excavation stability are also given. 展开更多

The impact of excavation on the reliability of anti- pull piles is studied, and three cases of reliability analysis, named reliability of ultimate limit state (ULS), reliability of serviceability limit state (SLS) and reliability of system (SYS) are studied. The reduction factor of the pile capacity is used to calculate the reliability indices for the three cases. The ratio ξ of the pile capacity of SLS to the pile capacity of ULS has a significant influence on the reliability indices of SLS and SYS. The mean value μξ of the ratio ξ: is considered as a random variable to study the reliability indices of SLS and SYS. The numerical example demonstrates that the excavation depth and the excavation diameter are proved to have significant influences on the reduction factor of the pile capacity and the reliability indices. The reliability indices decrease with the increase in the excavation depth, and the excavation diameter has a considerable influence on the reliability index when the excavation is relatively deep. In addition, μξ has a significant influence on the reliability indices of SLS and SYS. For a more accurate estimation of μξ, further research should be conducted to study μξ. 展开更多

As a mathematical analysis method, fractal analysis can be used to quantitatively describe irregular shapes with self-similar or self-affine properties.Fractal analysis has been used to characterize the shapes of metal materials at various scales and dimensions.Conventional methods make it difficult to quantitatively describe the relationship between the regular characteristics and properties of metal material surfaces and interfaces. However, fractal analysis can be used to quantitatively describe the shape characteristics of metal materials and to establish the quantitative relationships between the shape characteristics and various properties of metal materials. From the perspective of two-dimensional planes and three-dimensional curved surfaces, this paper reviews the current research status of the fractal analysis of metal precipitate interfaces, metal grain boundary interfaces,metal-deposited film surfaces, metal fracture surfaces, metal machined surfaces, and metal wear surfaces. The relationship between the fractal dimensions and properties of metal material surfaces and interfaces is summarized.Starting from three perspectives of fractal analysis, namely, research scope, image acquisition methods, and calculation methods, this paper identifies the direction of research on fractal analysis of metal material surfaces and interfaces that need to be developed. It is believed that revealing the deep influence mechanism between the fractal dimensions and properties of metal material surfaces and interfaces will be the key research direction of the fractal analysis of metal materials in the future. 展开更多

Peripheral nerve injury is a common neurological condition that often leads to severe functional limitations and disabilities.Research on the pathogenesis of peripheral nerve injury has focused on pathological changes at individual injury sites, neglecting multilevel pathological analysis of the overall nervous system and target organs. This has led to restrictions on current therapeutic approaches. In this paper,we first summarize the potential mechanisms of peripheral nerve injury from a holistic perspective, covering the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and target organs. After peripheral nerve injury, the cortical plasticity of the brain is altered due to damage to and regeneration of peripheral nerves;changes such as neuronal apoptosis and axonal demyelination occur in the spinal cord. The nerve will undergo axonal regeneration, activation of Schwann cells, inflammatory response, and vascular system regeneration at the injury site.Corresponding damage to target organs can occur, including skeletal muscle atrophy and sensory receptor disruption. We then provide a brief review of the research advances in therapeutic approaches to peripheral nerve injury. The main current treatments are conducted passively and include physical factor rehabilitation, pharmacological treatments,cell-based therapies, and physical exercise. However, most treatments only partially address the problem and cannot complete the systematic recovery of the entire central nervous system-peripheral nervous system-target organ pathway. Therefore,we should further explore multilevel treatment options that produce effective,long-lasting results, perhaps requiring a combination of passive(traditional)and active(novel)treatment methods to stimulate rehabilitation at the central-peripheral-target organ levels to achieve better functional recovery. 展开更多

An attempt has been made to study the behavior of nailed vertical excavations in medium dense to dense cohesionless soil under seismic conditions using a pseudo-dynamic approach. The effect of several parameters such as angle of internal friction of soil (φ), horizontal (kh) and vertical (kv) earthquake acceleration coefficients, amplification factor (fa), length of nails (L), angle of nail inclination (a) and vertical spacing of nails (S) on the stability of nailed vertical excavations has been explored. The limit equilibrium method along with a planar failure surface is used to derive the formulation involved with the pseudo-dynamic approach, considering axial pullout of the installed nails. A comparison of the pseudo-static and pseudo-dynamic approaches has been established in order to explore the effectiveness of the pseudo-dynamic approach over pseudo-static analysis, since most of the seismic stability studies on nailed vertical excavations are based on the latter. The results are expressed in terms of the global factor of safety (FOS). Seismic stability, i.e., the FOS of nailed vertical excavations is found to decrease with increase in the horizontal and vertical earthquake forces. The present values of FOS are compared with those available in the literature. 展开更多

A plane strain finite element model was established to investigate the effect of friction between diaphragm wall and soil on braced excavation. The behavior of interface between diaphragm wall and soil was simulated with the interface model of ABAQUS. Parametric studies were conducted with different diaphragm wall external friction angles δ. The results show that deflection of diaphragm wall and ground surface settlement decrease with the decrease of δ. However, the reduction effect on diaphragm wall deflection is the most significant at the depth where the maximum wall deflection occurs and can be neglected at the wall base. The ratio between wall deep inward component and wall cantilever component reaches its peak value 2.7 when δ=5°. The ratio of the maximum ground surface settlement to the maximum wall lateral deflection decreases at a reduced rate with the increase of δ. For excavation with braced diaphragm wall, the effect of friction between diaphragm and soil on the deflection of diaphragm wall and ground settlement, especially the distribution of ground surface settlement behind diaphragm, should be taken into account. 展开更多

The distribution of Coulomb failure stress (CFS) change in the steep excavation slope is calculated by finite element method in this paper, and the failure mechanics under different conditions have been investigated. Comparing the CFSs before and after the slope excavation (stress loading and unloading processes), the dangerous internal zone and the most likely failure external area are attained. Given the shear cracks on the top surface while tensile stress or cracks along the toe of the slope, we analyze the high cutting-angle steep slope in Kaixian county of the Three Gorges Reservoir region. We bring forward that the peak value of CFS after excavation can reach to the order of 0.1 MPa, which is greatly higher than that of before. Our preliminary results are useful for optimizing the reinforcement structure during the steep slope stabilization engineering. 展开更多

Excavation Damaged Zone(EDZ)scope is important for optimizing excavation and support schemes in deep underground caverns. However, accurately predicting the full EDZ scope within the surrounding rock masses of deep underground caverns during excavation remains a pressing problem. This study presents a comprehensive EDZ scope prediction approach(CESPA)for the brittle surrounding rock masses of deep underground caverns by coupling numerical simulation with quantitative analysis of borehole wall images and ultrasonic test results.First, the changes in both P-velocity(V_(p))and joint distribution of the surrounding rock masses before and after excavation damage are captured using ultrasonic tests and borehole digital cameras.Second, the quality Q-parameters of the surrounding rock mass before and after excavation damage are preliminarily rated with the rock mass descriptions provided by borehole wall images, and the rock mass V_(p)-parameter values are determined according to the V_(p)-borehole depth curves.Third, the Q-parameter ratings are further finely adjusted by updating the related Q-values to be similar with the Q-values estimated by V_(p)-parameter values.Fourth, the initial and residual mechanical parameters for the rock mass deterioration model(RDM)are estimated by the adjusted Q-parameter ratings based on the modified Q-based relations, and the elastic modulus deterioration index(EDI)threshold to describe the EDZ boundary is determined with the V_(p)-parameter values. Finally,EDZ scope is predicted using the elastoplastic numerical simulation with RDM and EDI based on the mechanical parameter estimates and EDI threshold.Analyses of applications in Sub-lab D1 in Jinping II project show that CESPA can provide a reliable and operable solution for predicting full EDZ scopes within the brittle surrounding rock masses of deep underground caverns. 展开更多

The cutter head will be stuck when the shield machine pass through the area existing anchor left by foundation construction of surrounding high-rise building.Subsurface excavation method is an efficient way to remove the existed anchor. In this paper,a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to study stability of cross-channel excavation. The time-spatial effects of arch crown settlement, intrados uplift and side wall horizontal convergence are analyzed according to different excavation size, lining thickness and lining order. The results show that the excavation size is the main factor to control the deformation of the surrounding soil, especially in arch crown settlement; The influence of lining thickness on the spatial effect of surrounding soil deformation is obvious when the excavation size is large, but little on the time effect; The influence of the lining order on the deformation of the surrounding soil is obvious,in particular, the larger the excavation size, the more obvious advantages of the lining order. Finally, based on the time-spatial effects comparison of nine excavation schemes of the cross-channel,an optimum excavation scheme is adopted in the actual project. 展开更多

To investigate the stability of rock mass in high geostress underground powerhouse caverns subjected to excavation,a microseismic(MS)monitoring system was established and the discrete element method(DEM)-based numerical simulation was carried out.The tempo-spatial damage characteristics of rock mass were analyzed. The evolution laws of MS source parameters during the formation of a rock collapse controlled by high geostress and geological structure were investigated.Additionally,a three-dimensional DEM model of the underground powerhouse caverns was built to reveal the deformation characteristics of rock mass. The results indicated that the MS events induced by excavation of high geostress underground powerhouse caverns occurred frequently. The large-stake crown of the main powerhouse was the main damage area.Prior to the rock collapse, the MS event count and accumulated energy release increased rapidly, while the apparent stress sharply increased and then decreased. The amount and proportion of shear and mixed MS events remarkably increased. The maximum displacement was generally located near the spandrel areas. The MS monitoring data and numerical simulation were in good agreement, which can provide significant references for damage evaluation and disaster forecasting in high geostress underground powerhouse caverns. 展开更多

A method to forecast the over-excavation of underground opening by using the Bayes discriminant analysis(BDA)theory was presented. The Bayes discriminant analysis theory was introduced.Based on an engineering example, the factors influencing the over-excavation of underground opening were taken into account to build a forecast BDA model, and the prior information about over-excavation of underground opening was also taken into consideration.Five parameters influencing the over-excavation of opening, including 2 groups of joints,1 group of layer surface, extension and space between structure faces were selected as geometric parameters.Engineering data in an underground opening were used as the training samples. The cross-validation method was introduced to verify the stability of BDA model and the ratio of mistake-discrimination was equal to zero after the BDA model was trained.Data in an underground engineering were used to test the discriminant ability of BDA model. The results show that five forecast results are identical with the actual situation and BDA can be used in practical engineering. 展开更多

When the tunnel underpasses through the building,it will cause deformation and even damage to the buildings above, and the deformation of building foundation is the key to building safety.Based on the engineering case, the theoretical analysis was employed to evaluate the influence of shield tunnel underpass construction on the stability of the building, and the optimal tunneling parameters in the field construction have been obtained through the verified theoretical model and parameter analysis.First, the strip foundation of the building was simplified to the Timoshenko beam, which was taken into account the shear effect, and then the deformation displacement of the soil at the same place of strip foundation was applied to the simplified Timoshenko beam. Finally, the numerical solution of the displacement of the strip foundation was obtained by using the finite element method and verified its reliability using Euler-Bernoulli beam theoretical model, field monitoring data, and numerical simulation.Parameters analysis for the deformation and internal force of strip foundation under different types of shield machine tunneling parameters showed that the influence of the pressure of shield excavation chamber, thrust of shield, and driving speed played an important role in the deformation of the building’s strip foundation and internal force. 展开更多

Estimation of in situ stresses based on back-analysis of measured stress changes and displacements has become an alternative to the direct stress measurement methods. In order to help users conduct own measurement and analysis, this paper presents in detail a field stress back-analysis approach directly from borehole strain changes measured during nearby underground excavation.Essential formulations in major steps and the procedure for the entire analysis process are provided to allow users to follow. The instrument for borehole strain change measurement can be the CSIR or CSIRO stress cells and other borehole strain cells that can measure strains on borehole walls.Strain changes corresponding to the stress changes at a borehole location are calculated in borehole environment. The stress changes due to nearby excavation can be calculated by an analytical model for a single circular opening and simulated by a numerical model for non-circular and multiple openings. These models are based on isotropic, homogeneous and linear elastic assumptions. The analysis of borehole strain changes is accomplished by multiple linear regression based on error minimization and an integrated process provides the best-fit solution directly to the in situ stresses.A statistical technique is adopted for screening outliers in the measurement data, checking measurement compatibility and evaluating the reliability of analysis results. An application example is included to demonstrate the practical application and the analysis procedure. 展开更多

To evaluate the rationality of the excavation and support structure design in tunnel engineering, numerical simulation and structural deformation stability analysis in excavation and support in a traffic tunnel are carried out in combination with the practical geological conditions study. The computation results demonstrate that following excavation, the surrounding rock deforms minimally and has a large self-bearing capacity. The shotcrete-bolt structure in the initial support has small deformation and stress, ensuring that it meets the safety and stability requirements. The stress of the secondary lining structure is calculated, which can also meet the structural strength requirements. The traffic tunnel’s supporting system is a practical and cost-effective manner. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling (FEM) analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of soil spatial variability on the response of retaining walls and an adjacent box culvert due to a braced excavation. The spatial variability of soil stiffness is modelled using a variogram and calibrated by high-quality experimental data. Multiple random field samples (RFSs) of soil stiffness are generated using geostatistical analysis and mapped onto a finite element mesh for stochastic analysis of excavation-induced structural responses by Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the spatial variability of soil stiffness can be described by an exponential variogram, and the associated vertical correlation length is varied from 1.3 m to 1.6 m. It also reveals that the spatial variability of soil stiffness has a significant effect on the variations of retaining wall deflections and box culvert settlements. The ignorance of spatial variability in 3D FEM can result in an underestimation of lateral wall deflections and culvert settlements. Thus, the stochastic structural responses obtained from the 3D analysis could serve as an effective aid for probabilistic design and analysis of excavations. 展开更多

Immune changes and inflammatory responses have been identified as central events in the pathological process of spinal co rd injury. They can greatly affect nerve regeneration and functional recovery. However, there is still limited understanding of the peripheral immune inflammato ry response in spinal cord inju ry.In this study.we obtained microRNA expression profiles from the peripheral blood of patients with spinal co rd injury using high-throughput sequencing. We also obtained the mRNA expression profile of spinal cord injury patients from the Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO)database(GSE151371).We identified 54 differentially expressed microRNAs and 1656 diffe rentially expressed genes using bioinformatics approaches.Functional enrichment analysis revealed that various common immune and inflammation-related signaling pathways, such as neutrophil extracellular trap formation pathway,T cell receptor signaling pathway, and nuclear factor-κB signal pathway,we re abnormally activated or inhibited in spinal cord inju ry patient samples. We applied an integrated strategy that combines weighted gene co-expression network analysis,LASSO logistic regression, and SVM-RFE algorithm and identified three biomarke rs associated with spinal cord injury:ANO10,BST1,and ZFP36L2.We verified the expression levels and diagnostic perfo rmance of these three genes in the original training dataset and clinical samples through the receiver operating characteristic curve.Quantitative polymerase chain reaction results showed that ANO20 and BST1 mRNA levels were increased and ZFP36L2 mRNA was decreased in the peripheral blood of spinal cord injury patients. We also constructed a small RNA-mRNA interaction network using Cytoscape.Additionally,we evaluated the proportion of 22 types of immune cells in the peripheral blood of spinal co rd injury patients using the CIBERSORT tool. The proportions of naive B cells, plasma cells, monocytes, and neutrophils were increased while the proportions of memory B cells,CD8^(+)T cells, resting natural killer cells, resting dendritic cells, and eosinophils were markedly decreased in spinal cord injury patients increased compared with healthy subjects, and ANO10,BST1 and ZFP26L2we re closely related to the proportion of certain immune cell types. The findings from this study provide new directions for the development of treatment strategies related to immune inflammation in spinal co rd inju ry and suggest that ANO10,BST2,and ZFP36L2 are potential biomarkers for spinal cord injury. The study was registe red in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry(registration No.ChiCTR2200066985,December 12,2022). 展开更多

Excavation-induced disturbances in deep tunnels will lead to deterioration of rock properties and formation of excavation damaged zone(EDZ).This excavation damage effect may affect the potential rockburst pit depth.Taking two diversion tunnels of Jinping II hydropower station for example, the relationship between rockburst pit depth and excavation damage effect is first surveyed. The results indicate that the rockburst pit depth in tunnels with severe damage to rock masses is relatively large.Subsequently, the excavation-induced damage effect is characterized by disturbance factor D based on the Hoek-Brown criterion and wave velocity method. It is found that the EDZ could be further divided into a high-damage zone(HDZ)with D=1 and weak-damage zone(WDZ),and D decays from one to zero linearly. For this,a quantitative evaluation method for potential rockburst pit depth is established by presenting a three-element rockburst criterion considering rock strength, geostress and disturbance factor. The evaluation results obtained by this method match well with actual observations. In addition, the weakening of rock mass strength promotes the formation and expansion of potential rockburst pits. The potential rockburst pit depth is positively correlated with HDZ and WDZ depths, and the HDZ depth has a significant contribution to the potential rockburst pit depth. 展开更多
