To explore the mechanisms underlying exercise-induced local muscle fatigue in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD),we used surface electromyography to record myoelectric signals from the tibialis anterior muscle during isometric contraction-induced fatigue until exhaustion. The results revealed no significant differences between patients with idiopathic PD and healthy controls in maximum voluntary contraction of the tibialis anterior muscle. The basic characteristics of surface electromyography were also similar between the two groups. The duration of isometric contraction at 50% maximum voluntary contraction was shortened in PD patients. In addition,PD patients exhibited a stronger increase in mean square amplitude, but a weaker decrease in median frequency and mean power frequency compared with healthy controls during isometric contraction. The skeletal muscles of PD patients revealed specificity of surface electromyography findings, indicating increased fatigability compared with healthy controls. 展开更多

Objective This study aimed to investigate the effect and underlying mechanism of Fructus lycii in improving exercise fatigue. Methods A network pharmacological approach was used to explore potential mechanisms of action of Fructus lycii.Skeletal muscle C2C12 cells and immunofluorescence were employed to verify the effect and mechanism of the representative components in Fructus lycii predicted by network pharmacological analysis. Results Six potential active components, namely quercetin,β-sitosterol,stigmasterol,7-Omethylluteolin-6-C-beta-glucoside_qt,atropine,and glycitein, were identified to have potency in improving exercise fatigue via multiple pathways, such as the PI3K-Akt,neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction,IL-17,TNF,and MAPK signaling pathways. The immunofluorescence results indicated that quercetin,a significant active component in Fructus lycii, increased the mean staining area of 2-NBDG,TMRM,and MitoTracker, and decreased the area of CellRox compared to the control.Furthermore, the protein expression levels of p-38 MAPK,p-MAPK,p-JNK,p-PI3K,and p-AKT markedly increased after quercetin treatment. Conclusion Fructus lycii might alleviate exercise fatigue through multiple components and pathways.Among these, quercetin appears to improve exercise fatigue by enhancing energy metabolism and reducing oxidative stress. The PI3K-AKT and MAPK signaling pathways also appear to play a role in this process. 展开更多

Accurate detection of exercise fatigue based on physiological signals is vital for reason-able physical activity. As a non-invasive technology, phonocardiogram(PCG)signals possess arobust capability to reflect cardiovascular information, and their data acquisition devices are quiteconvenient. In this study,a novel hybrid approach of fractional Fourier transform(FRFT)com-bined with linear and discrete wavelet transform(DWT)features extracted from PCG is proposedfor PCG multi-class classification. The proposed system enhances the fatigue detection performanceby combining optimized FRFT features with an effective aggregation of linear features and DWTfeatures. The FRFT technique is employed to convert the 1-D PCG signal into 2-D image which issent to a pre-trained convolutional neural network structure, called VGG-16.The features from theVGG-16 were concatenated with the linear and DWT features to form fused features. The fusedfeatures are sent to support vector machine(SVM)to distinguish six distinct fatigue levels.Experi-mental results demonstrate that the proposed fused features outperform other feature combinationssignificantly. 展开更多

Exercise fatigue is a physiological phenomenon where the body cannot maintain a specific level after being stimulated by excessive exercise. Its five main theories include“energy depletion”,“accumulation of metabolites”,“homeostasis disorder of the internal environment”,“free radicals”,and“central nervous system protection inhibition”.The imbalance of intestinal flora caused by vigorous exercise can further lead to fatigue. Therefore, maintaining healthy intestinal flora is crucial for athlete health and performance.Recent studies have demonstrated that probiotics can regulate intestinal flora and alleviate exercise fatigue;however, there are no systematic reviews on the anti-fatigue effects of probiotics.Based on the mechanisms of exercise-induced fatigue, this article summarizes the effects and mechanisms by which probiotics combat exercise fatigue, aiming to provide research ideas for the development of probiotics that prevent exercise fatigue. 展开更多

This study examined the effects of exercise on behavior and peripheral blood leukocyte apoptosis in a rat model of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Thirty-six healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally randomized into 3 groups: the control group, CFS model group and the exercise group in terms of body weight. A total of 25 rats entered the final statistical analysis due to 11 deaths during the study. CFS model was established by subjecting the rats in CFS model group and exercise group to electric shock, chronic restraint stress and cold water swim. Besides, rats in the exercise group took rtmning wheel exercise. After a week of conditioning feeding, model construction and running wheel exercise were performed simultaneously, and lasted for 23 consecutive days. The behavior experiments, including running wheel exercise, open-field test, tail suspension test and Morris water maze test, were conducted, either before or after the model establishment. Rats were sacrificed and peripheral blood was obtained for the assessment of lymphocyte apoptosis index by flow cytometry (FCM). It was found that as compared with those in the control group, the weight of the rats was decreased obviously (P〈0.01), the mobility time in the open-field and the tail suspension tests was shortened significantly (P〈0.01), the time to locate the platform was enhanced (P〈0.01) and the cell apoptosis index was increased substantially (P〈0.01) in the CSF model group. Meanwhile, in comparison to the model group, the behavior in the open-field and the tail suspension tests was improved significantly (P〈0.05), and the apoptosis index decreased remarkably (P〈0.01) in the exercise group. It is concluded that sport intervention can prevent lymphocyte apoptosis and improve animal behavior rather than the memory. 展开更多

Purpose: This study examined the possible causal mechanisms of fatigue during intense exercise in the heat in a group of nine sedentary women. Methods: Two strenuous cycling sessions were performed, at 100% of maximal aerobic power, either in neutral (N-Ex, air temperature: 22°C ± 0.4°C, air humidity: 53% ± 8%) or in heat conditions (H-Ex, air temperature: 35°C ± 0.3°C, air humidity: 59 ± 6). Tympanic temperature (Tty), heart rate (HR), body mass loss (BML), lactate concentration [La] and brain electrical activity (EEG: α and β waves and α/β ratio) were recorded. Results: Tty, HR and [La] increases (p ﹣1) than that during N-Ex (0.08 ± 0.02°C·min﹣1), and time to exhaustion (Time Limit at 100%) was significantly (p β waves decreased (p α/β ratio increased (p < 0.05) significantly immediately before exhaustion. Conclusion: During exercise in the heat, the high rate of core temperature rising might be a critical factor triggering faster brain changes. 展开更多

This study aimed to examine the influence of exercise habits and physical fitness level on subjective fatigue symptoms (SFS) in adolescent students. Four hundred and one healthy young male adults (age: 16.5 +/- 1.2 yr) participated in the physical fitness test of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan and responded to the questionnaire on exercise habits and SFS. SFS questionnaire was conducted 6 times with a week interval during the physical fitness test. SFS was compared among groups with different physical fitness levels and exercise habit. Significant differences were found in difficulty with concentrated thinking, languor and low vigor, with the high physical fitness group having lower values of the three fatigue factors than the low physical fitness group regardless of affiliation with sports club and gyms, exercise frequency and time. SFS is largely affected by physical fitness level but very little by exercise habits. 展开更多

Chronic fatigue syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) are, amongst others, characterized by exercise intolerance, pain, post exertional malaise and orthostatic intolerance. It has been shown in venous disease and sport participation that compression stockings may improve exercise performance and reduce post exercise muscle soreness. Moreover, its use is advocated in orthostatic hypotension. Therefore, it was hypothesized that compression stockings may reduce symptomatology in CFS/ME patients. Methods: 100 patients used compression stockings class II for minimally 3 weeks and thereafter filled in a questionnaire, based on the Rand 36 physical activity questions (n = 9), whether compression stockings changed perceived symptoms or not. Moreover, 7 questions referring to prolonged standing and sitting, to recovery post exercise, muscle pain during or immediately post exercise, and to dizziness/light-headedness during or immediately post exercise, while standing and during prolonged sitting were added. Questions were scored as 1: able to perform activity much less while wearing the stockings, 2: perform activity somewhat less, 3: no perceived change in activity, 4: perform activity slightly better, 5: able to perform activity much better while wearing the stockings. Results: In patients able to answer the question, all mean scores per activity were significantly higher than 3, being no perceived change in activity while wearing the stockings. Subgroup analysis showed that patients with orthostatic intolerance reported higher effects than patients without orthostatic intolerance. Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that compression stockings may be useful to reduce symptomatology of physical activities in CFS/ME patients, especially in patients with orthostatic intolerance. Larger prospective studies with hard endpoints are warranted. 展开更多

However, many people struggle to make exercise be a habit, in part because of the associated fatigue. The present study investigated the effects of tomato juice on fatigue induced by exercise in humans and mice. A study of 10 healthy men and women indicated that drinking tomato juice suppressed post-exercise increases in rated perceived exertion, a subjective fatigue indicator. In mice, a single administration of tomato juice significantly attenuated exercise-induced fatigue, as measured by locomotor activity and blood transforming growth factor β and corticosterone levels. The active substances in tomatoes, which were among the aqueous components as of tomato juice supernatant, showed the same anti-fatigue effects as whole tomato juice. Moreover, these effects were mimicked by water supplemented with the aqueous components (i.e., sugars, organic acids, and amino acids) and were likely exerted by two or more of these components. Our results suggest that consuming tomato juice prior to or during an exercise session can reduce post-exercise fatigue, which could encourage more individuals to incorporate a regular exercise regimen into their daily routine. 展开更多

Objective:To evaluate the anti-fatigue effects of different extracts from Cistanche tubulosa(Schenk)Wight(C.tubulosa,Rou Cong Rong),focusing on central and exercise-induced fatigue in mice. This study investigated the pharmacological effects of the total oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, and phenylethanoid glycosides(CPhGs)extracted from C.tubulosa.Methods: Models of sleep deprivation and forced swimming fatigue were established to simulate central and exercise-induced fatigue. The mice were treated with different extracts of C.tubulosa, and their effects were assessed using behavioral tests to measure exercise capacity, learning, and memory function.Biochemical analyses were performed to evaluate the changes in serum and brain neurotransmitter levels, liver and muscle glycogen storage, and various fatigue-related biomarkers. Results: This study found that treatment with C.tubulosa extract improved exercise capacity, learning, and memory in mice.Total oligosaccharides from C.tubulosa enhanced adrenocorticotropic hormone, cholinesterase, and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, reduced cortisol levels in central fatigue models, and ameliorated biochemical markers of exercise-induced fatigue, including lowering lactic acid, blood urea nitrogen, and malondialdehyde levels.Among the tested extracts, the total oligosaccharides showed the most comprehensive anti-fatigue effects. Conclusion: The anti-fatigue effects of C.tubulosa, particularly those of its total oligosaccharides, are pronounced in both central and exercise-induced fatigue. These effects are mediated by the regulation of neurotransmitter levels, enhancement of glycogen storage, and improvement of antioxidant enzyme activity, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits in fatigue-related conditions. 展开更多

The evaluation of neuromuscular function consisted in brief(3 s) isometric maximal voluntary contraction(IMVC) of the knee extension superimposed with electrical nerve stimulation before, immediately after, and during33 min after an exhausting submaximal isometric task at 15% of the IMVC. Force, voluntary activation level(VAL), potentiated twitch(Ptw), and electromyography(EMG) signals were measured during IMVC and then analyzed. Results: Individuals with ID developed lower baseline IMVC, VAL, Ptw; and RMS/M_(max) ratio(root-mean-square value normalized to the maximal peak-to-peak amplitude of the M-wave) than controls(p < 0.05). Nevertheless, the time to task failure was significantly longer in ID vs. controls(p < 0.05). The 2 groups presented similar IMVC decline and recovery kinetics after the fatiguing exercise. However. individuals with ID presented higher VAL and RMS/M_(max) ratio declines but lower Ptw decline compared to those without ID. Moreover, individuals with ID demonstrated a persistent central fatigue but faster recovery from peripheral fatigue. Conclusion: These differences in neuromuscular fatigue profiles and recovery kinetics should be acknowledged when prescribing training programs for individuals with ID. 展开更多

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different exercise intensities induced by a soccer specific protocol on kicking performance in soccer players. Methods: Twelve semi-professional male soccer players participated in this study and performed maximal instep kicks before and after the implementation of an exercise protocol to determine the influence of different intensities upon kicking ball velocity and the target-hitting accuracy. Results: Analysis of variance designs with repeated measures showed that maximal ball velocity was affected only after the most intense circuit(F(6, 66) = 2.3; p = 0.041; η2= 0.18), while accuracy was not affected in the protocol(F(6, 66) = 0.19; p = 0.98; η2= 0.02). Low and moderate intensities did not affect accuracy or kicking ball velocity. Conclusion: These findings suggest that kicking ball velocity is influenced by high-exercise intensities. Low and moderate exercise intensities do not affect the performance of the kick, and intensity does not influence accuracy. Otherwise, it is possible that other mechanisms(not only physiological) may influence players during the exercise. 展开更多
