BACKGROUND Extramedullary hematopoiesis rarely occurs within the liver alone,and is easily misdiagnosed.The radiological literature on this disease is exclusively case reports.There is a paucity of literature on the r...BACKGROUND Extramedullary hematopoiesis rarely occurs within the liver alone,and is easily misdiagnosed.The radiological literature on this disease is exclusively case reports.There is a paucity of literature on the role of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).The most common imaging modalities used are computed tomography and ultrasound.This report aims to provide more data on the appearance of extramedullary hematopoiesis using MRI to help radiologists establish the diagnosis.CASE SUMMARY Three patients(one male and two females)were incidentally found to have a hepatic mass or nodule,without hepatomegaly or splenomegaly.Laboratory tests including liver function,serum hepatic tumor markers,and hepatitis serologic markers were normal.On MRI scans,all lesions showed lower signal intensity on in-phase images than on out-phase images.One case showed changes in signal intensity on T2 weighted images(WI)and diffusion WI,which shifted from hyperintensity to hypointensity with size enlargement between two rounds of imaging examination.These lesions exhibited different enhancement patterns on dynamic contrast enhancement series.CONCLUSION The MRI signal change and in-/out-phase image might provide useful information and help radiologists establish the diagnosis of intrahepatic extramedullary hematopoiesis.展开更多
Intermittent fasting can benefit breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or immunotherapy.However,it is still uncertain how to select immunotherapy drugs to combine with intermittent fasting.Herein we observed ...Intermittent fasting can benefit breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or immunotherapy.However,it is still uncertain how to select immunotherapy drugs to combine with intermittent fasting.Herein we observed that two cycles of fasting treatment significantly inhibited breast tumor growth and lung tissue metastasis,as well as prolonged overall survival in mice bearing 4T1 and 4T07 breast cancer.During this process,both the immunosuppressive monocytic-(M-)and granulocytic-(G-)myeloid-derived suppressor cell(MDSC)decreased,accompanied by an increase in interleukin(IL)7R^(+)and granzyme B^(+)T cells in the tumor microenvironment.Interestingly,we observed that Ly6G^(low)G-MDSC sharply decreased after fasting treatment,and the cell surface markers and protein mass spectrometry data showed potential therapeutic targets.Mechanistic investigation revealed that glucose metabolism restriction suppressed the splenic granulocytemonocyte progenitor and the generation of colony-stimulating factors and IL-6,which both contributed to the accumulation of G-MDSC.On the other hand,glucose metabolism restriction can directly induce the apoptosis of Ly6G^(low)G-MDSC,but not Ly6G^(high)subsets.In summary,these results suggest that glucose metabolism restriction induced by fasting treatment attenuates the immune-suppressive milieu and enhances the activation of CD3^(+)T cells,providing potential solutions for enhancing immune-based cancer interventions.展开更多
The general opinion that hemoglobin is only a carrier protein for oxygen and carbon dioxide has been challenged by several recent studies showing hemoglobin expression in other cells than those of the erythroid series...The general opinion that hemoglobin is only a carrier protein for oxygen and carbon dioxide has been challenged by several recent studies showing hemoglobin expression in other cells than those of the erythroid series,for example,in macrophages.We discovered b-globin expression in rat experimental granulation tissue induced by subcutaneously implanted cellulose sponges.Closer investigation revealed also a-globin expression.The first peak of the biphasic globin expression noticed during granulation tissue formation correlated with the invasion of monocytes/macrophages,whereas the second one seemed to be connected to the appearance of hematopoietic progenitors.Data presented in this study indicate globin expression both in macrophages and in immature erythroid cells as validated by erythroid-specific markers.展开更多
