In high-altitude cold areas,freeze-thaw(F-T)cycles induced by day-night and seasonal temperature changes cause numerous rock mass slope engineering disasters. To investigate the dynamic properties of rock in the natural environment of a high-altitude cold area, standard specimens were drilled from the slope of the Jiama copper mine in Tibet, and dynamic compression tests were performed on watersaturated and frozen sandstone with different numbers of F-T cycles(0,10,20,30,and 40)by the split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system with a cryogenic control system. The influence of water-saturated and frozen conditions on the dynamic performance of sandstone was investigated. The following conclusions are drawn:(1)With increasing strain rate, the attenuation factor(la)of water-saturated sandstone and the intensifying factor(li)of frozen sandstone linearly increase. As the number of F-T cycles increases, the dependence factor(ld)of water-saturated sandstone linearly decreases, whereas the ld of frozen sandstone linearly increases.(2)The prediction equation of the dynamic compressive strength of water-saturated and frozen sandstone is obtained, which can be used to predict the dynamic compressive strength of sandstone after various F-T cycles based on the strain rate.(3)The mesoscopic mechanism of water-saturated and frozen sandstone’s dynamic compressive strength evolution is investigated. The water softening effect causes the dynamic compressive strength of water-saturated sandstone to decrease, whereas the strengthening effect of pore ice causes it to increase.(4)The decrease in the relative dynamic compressive strength of water-saturated sandstone and the increase in the relative dynamic compressive strength of frozen sandstone can be attributed to the increased porosity. 展开更多

The characteristics of reactive magnesia(MgO)-carbonated silt in respect to long-term stability have not been well understood in severely cold climate despite the usage of reactive MgO in enhancing the engineering performances.Under the binder content of 15%and initial water content of 25%,MgO-admixed silt specimens were carbonized for 3 h and 6 h and then subjected to different numbers of freezingthawing(F-T)cycles.After different F-T cycles, the physico-mechanical properties of MgO-carbonated silt were analyzed in comparison with Portland cement(PC)-stabilized silt through physical and unconfined compression tests.Besides,a series of micro tests on MgO-carbonated specimens was performed including X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)tests. The results demonstrate that both mass change ratio and moisture content of carbonated/stabilized silt decrease, and these values of MgO-carbonated silt are significantly lower while the density is higher compared to PC-stabilized silt. The strengths and moduli of MgO-carbonated silt are still two times higher than those of PC-stabilized specimens and the strength change ratio of keeps above0.8 after F-T cycles. There is no visible transformation between nesquehonite and dypingite/hydromagnesite,although the XRD peaks of nesquehonite decrease and the bonding and filling effects weaken slightly. After 6 and 10 F-T cycles, the pore-size characteristics changed from a unimodal distribution to a three-peak and bimodal distribution, respectively. The total, macro and large pore volumes increase obviously while the medium and small pore volumes decrease except for intra-aggregate pore. The findings show better F-T durability of MgO-carbonated silt, which would be helpful for facilitating the application of MgO carbonation in the soil treatment. 展开更多

The shear bond of interface between concrete and basalt fiber reinforced polymer(BFRP)bars during freeze–thaw(F–T)cycles is crucial for the application of BFRP bar-reinforced concrete structures in cold regions. In this study,48 groups of pull-out specimens were designed to test the shear bond of the BFRP-concrete interface subjected to F–T cycles. The effects of concrete strength, diameter, and embedment length of BFRP rebar were investigated under numerous F–T cycles.Test results showed that a larger diameter or longer embedment length of BFRP rebar resulted in lower interfacial shear bond behavior, such as interfacial bond strength, initial stiffness, and energy absorption, after the interface goes through F–T cycles. However, higher concrete strength and fewer F–T cycles were beneficial for enhancing the interfacial bond behavior.Subsequently,a three-dimensional(3D)interfacial model based on the finite element method was developed, and the interfacial bond behavior of the specimens was analyzed in-depth.Finally,a degradation bond strength subjected to F–T cycles was predicted by a proposed mechanical model. The predictions were fully consistent with the tested results. The model demonstrated accuracy in describing the shear bond behavior of the interface under numerous F–T cycles. 展开更多
