The second Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder(ATMS)was onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA)-20 satellite when launched on 18 November 2017.Using nearly six months of the earliest NOAA-20 observations,the biases of the ATMS instrument were compared between NOAA-20 and the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership(S-NPP)satellite.The biases of ATMS channels 8 to 13 were estimated from the differences between antenna temperature observations and model simulations generated from Meteorological Operational(MetOp)-A and MetOp-B satellites’Global Positioning System(GPS)radio occultation(RO)temperature and water vapor profiles.It was found that the ATMS onboard the NOAA-20 satellite has generally larger cold biases in the brightness temperature measurements at channels 8 to 13 and small standard deviations.The observations from ATMS on both S-NPP and NOAA-20 are shown to demonstrate an ability to capture a less than 1-h temporal evolution of Hurricane Florence(2018)due to the fact that the S-NPP orbits closely follow those of NOAA-20. 展开更多

Objective: This study aimed to explore the 100-year changes in regulations for the Florence Nightingale Medal.Methods: We used the announcements of the Florence Nightingale Medal awards as the research object to analyze-via historical and inductive methods-the regulations for receiving the Florence Nightingale Medal.Results: In the award years, the greatest number of winners per award year was 71 and the lowest was 12. The medal was initially exclusively awarded to living people but evolved to include both living and deceased people. The recipients were balanced among all countries. The gender of the winners showed a changing trend from being limited to only females to including both males and females.There was also a shift from emphasis on only dedication of the recipient to equal emphasis on both dedication and innovation.Conclusions: The selection criteria for recipients of the Florence Nightingale Medal evolved from consideration of those showing only dedication to equal consideration of both dedication and innovation. 展开更多

Florence (Italy) is a worldwide well-known cultural historical city, with many outstanding monumental buildings visited every year by about 20M people, since 1982 the historical city center is under the UNESCO Patrona... Florence (Italy) is a worldwide well-known cultural historical city, with many outstanding monumental buildings visited every year by about 20M people, since 1982 the historical city center is under the UNESCO Patronage. Conservation of monumental buildings is subject to the principles of integrity and authenticity, in Italy recalled by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage 2011 rule, which defines the procedure for their seismic vulnerability evaluation. For that, the knowledge of the masonry structure is in need, and in lack of historical documentation on the design, only non destructive tests (NDT), or very low destructive tests, can be run on the masonry for acquiring this knowledge on its structure and consistence. For this purpose, we are largely using specific ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology, which is resulting highly performing in defining masonry structure and consistence. This paper summarizes selected case histories regarding the main Florentine historical monumental buildings: Palazzo Vecchio, Brunelleschi’s Cupola, Giotto’s Bell-Tower, and San Giovanni Baptistery. The correct interpretation of the GPR data requires knowledge about the masonry techniques of the age of construction, and local verification with micro drill-holes with video inspections, sonic and ultrasonic tests, in defining historical monumental buildings masonry structure and competence, static and dynamic behavior parameters and seismic vulnerability. 展开更多

Up to 1980 s,the most used preservative for herbaria specimens was HgCl2,sublimating at ambient air conditions;ionic Hg then reduces to Hg0(gaseous elemental mercury,GEM)and diffuses throughout poor ventilated environments.High GEM levels may indeed persist for decades,representing a health hazard.In this study,we present new GEM data from the Central Italian Herbarium and Tropical Herbarium Studies Centre of the University of Florence(Italy).These herbaria host one of the largest collection of plants in the world.Here,HgCl2 was documented as plant preservative up to the 1920 s.GEM surveys were conducted in July 2013 and July and December 2017,to account for temporal and seasonal variations.Herbaria show GEM concentrations well above those of external locations,with peak levels within specimen storage cabinets,exceeding 50,000 ng/m3.GEM concentrations up to^7800 ng/m3 were observed where the most ancient collections are stored and no ventilation systems were active.On the contrary,lower GEM concentrations were observed at the first floor.Here,lower and more homogeneously distributed GEM concentrations were measured in 2017 than in 2013 since the air-conditioning system was updated in early2017.GEM concentrations were similar to other herbaria worldwide and lower than Italian permissible exposure limit of 20,000 ng/m3(8-hr working day).Our results indicate that after a century from the latest HgCl2 treatment GEM concentrations are still high,i.e.,the treatment itself is almost irreversible.Air conditioning and renewing is probably the less expensive and more effective method for GEM lowering. 展开更多

Extracting information about emerging events in large study areas through spatiotemporal and textual analysis of geotagged tweets provides the possibility of monitoring the current state of a disaster.This study proposes dynamic spatio-temporal tweet mining as a method for dynamic event extraction from geotagged tweets in large study areas.It introduces the use of a modified version of ordering points to identify the clustering structure to address the intrinsic heterogeneity of Twitter data.To precisely calculate the textual similarity,three state-of-theart text embedding methods of Word2vec,GloVe,and Fast Text were used to capture both syntactic and semantic similarities.The impact of selected embedding algorithms on the quality of the outputs was studied.Different combinations of spatial and temporal distances with the textual similarity measure were investigated to improve the event detection outcomes.The proposed method was applied to a case study related to 2018 Hurricane Florence.The method was able to precisely identify events of varied sizes and densities before,during,and after the hurricane.The feasibility of the proposed method was qualitatively evaluated using the Silhouette coefficient and qualitatively discussed.The proposed method was also compared to an implementation based on the standard density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise algorithm,where it showed more promising results. 展开更多

Social Vulnerability Factors and Reported Post-Disaster Needs in the Aftermath of Hurricane Florence

This research examines the relationship between social vulnerability factors and reported needs following Hurricane Florence.Weighted least squares regression models were used to identify predictor variables for valid registrations that reported needs pertaining to emergencies,food,and shelter.Data consisted of zip codes in North Carolina and South Carolina that received individual assistance for Hurricane Florence(N=406).The results suggest that when controlling for event-specific factors and flood mitigation factors,the proportions of the population that is female,the population over 65,the population aged5 and under,the population older than 5 years not speaking English,and the minority population were all predictors of the per capita reported emergency needs.When controlling for the same variables,the proportions of the population over the age of 25 with a Bachelor’s degree,the female population,the population aged 5 and under,the population above 5 years old that does not speak English,and the minority population were all predictors of the per capita reported food needs.With the same variables controlled for,three variables—the proportions of the population over65,the population aged 5 and under,and the non-Englishspeaking population above 5 years of age—were all predictors of the per capita reported shelter needs.The results suggest that more attention should be given to these vulnerable populations in the pre-disaster planning process. 展开更多
