The FRP thickness, beam depth and concrete strength at ultimate load are considered as main strength parameters. A finite element (FE) by using ANSYS computer program was used to analyze the reinforced concrete beams. The numerical models were used to investigate the effect of beam depth, concrete strength, CFRP sheet configuration, and CFRP sheet thickness on the behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheets compared with different guidelines. The results from ACI guideline show little difference compared with FE, which make it suitable for RC beams strengthened with FRP sheets.展开更多

Time-history analysis was performed to simulate the seismic failure process of a gravity dam that was assumed to be reinforced at the locations of slope discontinuity at the downstream surface, part of the upstream face, and the dam heel. A damage model considering the influence of concrete heterogeneity was used to model the nonlinearity of concrete. A bond-slip model was applied to the interface between FRP and concrete, and the reinforcement mechanism was analyzed through the bond stress and the stress in FRP. The results of the crack pattern, displacement, and acceleration of the reinforced dam were compared with those of the original one. It is shown that FRP, as a reinforcement material, postpones the occurrence of cracks and slows the crack propagation, and that cracks emanating from the upstream surface and downstream surface are not connected, meaning that the reinforced dam can retain water-impounding function when subjected to the earthquake. Anti-seismic reinforcement with FRP is therefore beneficial to improving the seismic resistant capability of concrete dams.展开更多

Twenty one curved specimens and seven plane specimens are studied in the paper, in which curved specimens with bonded CFRP sheets can simulate the concrete spalling in tunnel, culvert, arch bridge etc., whereas plane specimens with bonded CFRP sheets can simulate the concrete spalling in beam bridge, slab bridge and pedestrian bridge. Three kinds of curved specimens with different radii of curvature are chosen by referring to practical tunnel structures, and plane specimens are used for comparison with curved ones. A peeling load is applied on the FRP sheet by loading a circular steel tube placed into the central notch of beam to debond CFRP sheets from the bent concrete surface, meanwhile full-range load-deflection curves are recorded by a MTS 831.10 Elastomer Test System. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical analysis is also conducted for the specimens. Both theoretical and experimental results show that only two material parameters, the interfacial fracture energy of CFRP-concrete interface and the tensile stiffness of CFRP sheets, are needed for describing the interfacial spalling behavior. It is found that the radius of curvature has remarkable influence on peeling load-deflection curves. The test methods and test results given in the paper are helpful and available for reference to the designer of tunnel strengthening.展开更多

However, problems would appear and how to deal with the interfacial transition zone(ITZ) and make it stronger is the key point for this concept. Considering that silane coupling agent(SCA) can provide a better bond on a silicon-containing material surface, it was introduced as a modifying material to further improve the bond quality of the ITZ between lightweight aggregate and cement paste. Results indicated that the water absorptivity of lightweight aggregate can be controlled by SCA solutions, and the pull-off bond strength, mechanical strength, and microhardness were increased, which was attributed to the optimized microstructure under the condition of an appropriate concentration of SCA.展开更多
