The magic of the novel lies in something under the surface meaning of the novel itself. With symbolism as a main figurative device, there are various symbols in this novel. Symbol, in literature, is a thing that refers or suggests something more than its literal meaning. In this novel, a lot of symbols are employed, some of them are obvious, others are obscure. This paper will focus on the objective symbols, the things and the people that can be seen by our eyes.展开更多

Furthermore, human being is just susceptible to his own sinister nature. Both Heart of Darkness and Lord of the Flies imply that every man has an evil heart of darkness which is more often than not drowned out by the glow of civilization.展开更多

In this novel, Golding exposes the dark side of human nature. What have left an impressive shocking image in this novel are the three bloody incidents occurring among the originally innocent children. After a brief introduction to Lord of the Flies and comparison and contrast of the three murders, we find that the reasons are not only "the dark side of human nature", but also the death instinct, the instinct of fear and power, which are derived from psychoanalysis. Undeniably, the external factors, such as the social circumstance and natural surroundings are also responsible for the boys' uncontrolled behavior.展开更多

Alpha diversity indices, including richness, evenness, Shannon-Wiener;beta diversity indices(Jaccard’s and Sorensen’s similarity indices) and synanthropic index were calculated. Results: A total of 2 664 specimens of 9 sand fly species were collected from mountainous(47%) and plain(53%) areas. Species richness, species evenness, and Shannon-Wiener indices were obtained as 9, 0.637, and 1.399, respectively in the mountainous area. Phlebotomus sergenti and Phlebotomus papatasi were constant species with the synanthropic index of-18.463 and-29.412, respectively. In addition, species richness, species evenness, and Shannon-Wiener indices were 4, 0.690, and 0.956, respectively in the plain area. Phlebotomus sergenti and Phlebotomus papatasi were dominant species with the synanthropic index of +9.695 and +36.207, respectively. Similarity indices were low among different biotopes of plain and mountainous areas. Conclusions: A basic knowledge about the diversity of sand flies in various biotopes is essential to design sound control programs. Biodiversity and synanthropic indices of sand flies are different in plain and mountainous areas due to the difference in biotic and abiotic factors between the two areas.展开更多

This study is an effort to establish information about the pest and, to test the susceptibility of some Mango cultivars (Baladi, Kitchener, Shendi, Alphons, Abu Samaka and Bit abusamaka) to the pest infestation. A survey was carded out at Shendi area, River Nile State, during the period of May 2007 to July 2008, using a home made trap resemble lvnfield traps with attractants (Methyl eugenol, Trimedlure, cue lure and Nu lure) to identify the fruit flies species found in the area and to study the seasonal abundance of the pest species and to determine the infestation percentage of different Mango cultivars. Results indicated that the fruit fly Bactrocera invadens is present all year-round in the study area, with population peak July to September. The study showed that Guava ( Psedium guajava ) represents the best alternative host for the pest. Abu samaka and Bit Abusa amaka mango cultivars were the most susceptible, with 100% infestation, followed by Shendi 70%, Kitchener 54%, Alphons and Baladi (30%, 28%, respectively) were the least susceptible. Also results revealed that females of both species Ceratitis cosyra and Bactrocera invadens out numbered males 4-5 times.展开更多

文摘Fruit flies are serious pests of Mango in Sudan; they cause substantial damage to Mango production, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Also results revealed that females of both species Ceratitis cosyra and Bactrocera invadens out numbered males 4-5 times.
文摘Lord of the Flies is the masterpiece of British writer William Golding who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Thiswork takes children as the protagonists and shows the theme of the barbarism of human nature. Based on Freud’sTripartite Model of Human Psyche, this study analyzes the personality characteristics of Jack in psychologicalperspective, reveals the different states reflected in the realm of in id, ego and superego, and thus stresses therestraining effect of social rules and civilization on the barbarism of human nature.
文摘Lord of the Flies is one of the most important novels written by William Golding, and it contains multiple meanings. This paper aims to interpret author’s intentions through an archetype study based on the view of the Bible.Through detailed analysis,it comes to a conclusion that,if human wants to be rescued,we have to be aware of the evil side in us.
文摘The present review article demonstrates laboratory and field evaluations of entomopathogenic nematodes(EPNs)against different developmental stages of fruit flies. The virulence of the EPNs differed clearly even on the same insect species and/or by the same nematode species.Such differences might be attributed to some reasons such as the method of treatment as well as the concentrations of the tested nematodes.Fruit flies are among the most important insect pests infesting vegetables and fruits causing considerable losses in the yields worldwide. In laboratory studies, the tested nematodes proved to be highly virulent to larvae as percentage of mortality may reach 100%.As for treated pupae,at different ages, the results are variable and controversially;some studies revealed their moderate or high susceptibility to nematode infection and others indicated low susceptibility or resistance to infection.Treated adults,or those emerged from treated larvae or pupae, are also susceptible to infection. In semi-field and field trials,EPNs proved to be successful for reducing the populations of some fruit flies with up to 85%at concentrations not less than 100 infective juveniles(IJs)/cm^2 of soil. However, the field applications of commercial EPNs have been recommended to be 2.5-5 x 10^9 IJs/ha(25-50 IJs/cm^2 of soil).
