Experimental investigation of the inhibition of deep-sea mining sediment plumes by polyaluminum chloride

Deep-sea sediment disturbance may occur when collecting polymetallic nodules,resulting in the creation of plumes that could have a negative impact on the ecological environment.This study aims to investigate the potential solution of using polyaluminum chloride(PAC)in the water jet.The effects of PAC are examined through a self-designed simulation system for deep-sea polymetallic nodule collection and sediment samples from a potential deep-sea mining area.The experimental results showed that the optimal PAC dose was found to be 0.75 g/L.Compared with the test conditions without the addition of PAC,the presence of PAC leads to a reduction in volume,lower characteristic turbidity,smaller diffusion velocity,and shorter settling time of the plume.This indicates that PAC inhibits the entire development process of the plume.The addition of PAC leads to the flocculation of mm-sized particles,resulting in the formation of cm-sized flocs.The flocculation of particles decreases the rate of erosion on the seabed by around 30%.This reduction in erosion helps to decrease the formation of plumes.Additionally,when the size of suspended particles increases,it reduces the scale at which they diffuse.Furthermore,the settling velocity of flocs(around 10^(-2) m/s)is much higher that of compared to sediment particles(around 10^(-5) m/s),which effectively reduces the amount of time the plume remains in suspension. 展开更多

This study presents a comparative study of the flocculation behavior of kaolinite induced by chitosan-graft-poly(acrylamide-dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride)(Chi-g-CPAM) and a commercial cationic polyacrylamide(CPAM).The flocculation behaviour was characterised in terms of both flocculation kinetics and the corresponding morphology changes during flocculation.Both Chi-g-CPAM and CPAM were grafted from silica wafers by means of atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP).The quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation(QCM-D) tests were conducted.The equilibrium time flocculated by Chi-g-CPAM was found to be 0.46 times as that of CPAM,together with a larger total mass of kaolinite layer.The flocculation behaviour by Chi-g-CPAM can be well captured by a pseudo-first-order model.In contrast,the presence of CPAM leads to a more complex kinetics.A relatively larger fitting slope(0.4663) was obtained at the initial stage but the fitting slope droped to 0.2026 after 800 min,indicating a densification process caused by CPAM.The flocculation kinetics of CPAM can be captured by the Elovich model for the inital stage but the combination of pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models for the latter stages,which can be attributed to the long chain of CPAM.With a dosage of 75 g/t,the settling test with Chi-g-CPAM exhibits the same turbidity in the supernatant but a smaller layer thickness of the settlement compared to CPAM.The study enables a better understanding of the flocculation behavior and contributes to the development of efficient flocculants in mineral processing and tailings treatment. 展开更多

The polyacrylamide which is directly added into concrete shows strong water absorption property.Thus the construction of underwater constructure would demand high amount of water,resulting in poor workability of concrete and strength shrinkage after hardening.Herein,a kind of anionic polyacrylamide(APAM)grafted with water reducing functional group(-COOH)was synthesized at low temperatures by partial factor design and response surface design.The structure and morphology of APAM were characterized by UV,FTIR and SEM methods.The experimental results show that the molecular weight of the synthesized APAM could reach 11 million,under the condition that the temperature was 35℃,the pH value was 8,the monomer concentration was 27wt%,the initiator dosage was 0.6wt%,and the monomer ratio(n(AM):n(AA))was 3.When the APAM was applied into the underwater slurry,it presented good flocculation and low water demand.When the dosage was 1%of the mass of the cement,the water demand increased by 12%,which could meet the self-leveling and anti-dispersity of the underwater slurry at the same time.This technology provides technical guidance for the large-scale industrial production of polyacrylamide for underwater concrete construction while achieving environmental protection during production. 展开更多

High purity ammonium metavanadate(NH_(4)VO_(3))is the most vital chemical to produce V2O5,VO2,VN alloy,VFe alloy and VOSO4,which have some prospective applications for high strength steel,smart window,infrared detector and imaging,large scale energy storage system.NH_(4)VO_(3)is usually produced by spontaneous crystallization from the aqueous solution due to its sharp dependence of solubility on the temperature.However,hazardous chemicals in industrial effluent,include phosphorate,silicate and arsenate,causing severe damage to the environment.In this work,these impurities are selectively precipitated onto inorganic flocculants,while the vanadate dissolved in an aqueous solution keeps almost undisturbed.Therefore,high purity NH_(4)VO_(3)is produced by the crystallization from the purified solution.By screening various flocculants and precipitating parameters,polyaluminum sulfate with an optimal amount of 50 g/L,is demonstrated to selectively remove phosphorate,silicate and arsenate,corresponding to the removing efficiency of 93.39%,97.11%and 88.31%,respectively.NH_(4)VO_(3)from the purified solution holds a purity of 99.21%,in comparison with 98.33%in the product from the crude solution.This purifying technology cannot only produce NH_(4)VO_(3)with high added value,but also reduce the environmental pollution of waste liquid. 展开更多

The composition of tailings particles in mines plays a key role in the flocculation settlement of slurries.To study the influence of coarse particle tailings(CPTs)on the flocculation settlement of tailings slurries(TSs),static flocculent settling tests,scanning electron microscopy observations,and laser particle size analyses were conducted using the tailings obtained from a copper mine.The results demonstrate that(i)in the accelerated and free settling process,CPTs did not directly settle at the bottom of graduated cylinders;instead,they were netted by the flocculent structures(FSs)and settled together more quickly.The CPTs accelerate the rapid settlement of TSs;the acceleration effect is more obvious when the CPTs content is greater than 50 wt%.(ii)The most appropriate flocculant unit consumption(FUC)is 20 g·t-1,and no substantial increase is observed in the flocculant settling velocity with an increase in the flocculant because the effective FSs did not substantially change and thus did not lead to a notable increase in the settling velocity of the solid–liquid interface(SLI).(iii)In the effective settling space of the thickening facility,free water quickly flowed from the pores of FSs,which is reflected in the period from 0 to 1 min. 展开更多

[Objective] The technological parameter suitable for the dewatering of dredged sediment from Dianchi Lake was studied.[Method] By means of the treatment method of sewage sludge in sewage treatment plant,flocculants including FeCl3,Al2(SO4)3 and PAM were taken as dewatering agents which were added in dredged sediment.[Result] The results showed that Al2(SO4)3 had better dewatering effect than FeCl3 and PAM,and the optimum dosing quantity of Al2(SO4)3 in dredged sediment was 170 mg/L,in addition,the water quality of supernatant met the first class B standard of GB18918-2002 and could be directly discharged to nature water without pollution.[Conclusion] The study could provide a simple and feasible way for the rapid dewatering of dredged sediment from Dianchi Lake,which would be convenient for the disposal and resource utilization of dredged sediment. 展开更多

How to use water resource effectively is an important problem in developing industry. Three combined processes which are composed of oil separator+de-emulsification flocculation+sand filtration (SDF), oil separator+hydrolytic acidification+SBR (SAS) and oil separator+de-emulsification flocculation +SBR (SDS) are conducted in laboratory-scale experiment to treat oil extraction wastewater for an oil-field. The experimental results show that the removal rate of COD(chemistry oxygen demand) and oil treated by SDF process are 85% and 95% respectively, the residual oil in effluent can meet the discharge standard, but the residual COD can not. The removal rate of COD and BOD (biological oxygen demand) of the SAS effluent are 85% and 90% respectively, the BOD can meet but the COD can not meet discharge standard. So the further treatment is required in the process. The SDS effluent with removal rate of 95% and 90% are obtained for COD and BOD respectively, which can completely meet the national standards of oil wastewater discharge and refilling (China). The experimental result shows that oil extraction wastewater has turned into water resource after being treated by SDS. 展开更多

The slurry settling characteristics are the most important to design a thickener in process industries. In this work, the iron ore slurry from the screw classifier overflow was used for the settling study. It was observed that the original slurry exhibited a low settling velocity and a turbid supernatant during the settling process. Commercial flocculating agents with anionic, cationic, and nonionic characters were used to improve the settling behavior of suspensions, which were added into the slurry at different ranges of slurry pH values, respectively. The settling results show that the use of flocculants increase the settling rate by several times. Compared with the cationic and non-ionic flocculants, the anionic flocculant is more effective in enhancing the slurry settling rate. The small dose of the anionic flocculant is found to be more effective, but the other flocculants are less effective even at higher dosages. The simulation of an industrial thickener was carried out based on the laboratory settling data, and the appropriate design and selection parameters of the industrial thickener were estimated. 展开更多

Water supply and sanitation demands are foreseen to face enormous challenges over the coming decades to meet the fast growing needs in a global perspective. Significant growth in the industry is predicted and membrane separation technologies have been identified as one of the possible solutions to meet future demands. Application and implementation of membrane technology is expected both in production of potable water as well as in treatment of wastewater. In potable water production membranes are substituting conventional separation technologies due to the superior performance, potential for less chemical use and sludge production, as well as the potential to fulfill hygienic barrier requirements. Membrane bio-reactor (MBR) technology is probably the membrane process which has had most success and has the best prospects for the future in wastewater treatment. Trends and developments indicate that this technology is becoming accepted and is rapidly becoming the best available technology for many wastewater treatment applications. A major drawback of MBR systems is membrane fouling. Studies have shown that fouling mitigation in MBR systems can potentially be done by coupling coagulation and flocculation to the process. 展开更多

In order to improve the flocculation efficiency of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride(PDADMAC), high molecular weight PDADMAC should be prepared from high purity diallyldimethylammonium chloride(DADMAC) monomers. In this paper, a cleaner method with microwave irradiation and alkali solidification was proposed for preparing high pure DADMAC by selective heating under low temperature, and the prepared high purity DADMAC is characterized using FTIR and atomic absorption spectrometry. The new method provides a solution to the key technical problem of PDADMAC synthesis. Comparing with the conventional methods, the results showed that the advantages of the novel synthesis include: (a) high purity DADMAC is improved from 57% to 71% ; (b) reaction time of tertiary amine preparation is shortened from 6 h to 7 min; (c) water instead of acetone was used as reaction medium; (d) toxic by-products, wastewater and waste gas are eliminated. Flocculant made from the synthesized high purity DADMAC monomers was proved more efficient in flocculation tests. 展开更多

This paper reports the systematic investigation on the flocculation,sedimentation and consolidation characteristics of kaolinite using guar gum as a green flocculant.In-situ flocculation behavior of kaolinite at various pH,guar gum dosages,and ionic strength were studied using a light scattering technique.The effect of these parameters on the settling rate,solid consolidation,and supernatant liquid clarity was recorded.The morphology of kaolinite and flocculated kaolinite aggregates were analyzed using FESEM.The morphology studies suggest that it is poorly crystalline with multiple steps on edge,broken edge;laminar with high aspect ratio and have rough basal surface.The complex irregularity on the basal surface and the presence of multiple steps in the edges,broken edges(hydroxyl groups)have facilitated the guar gum adsorption.The isoelectric point of kaolinite is pH 3.96.The pH,ionic strength and flocculant dosage have a significant effect on the kaolinite settling rate.The guar gum has exhibited excellent turbidity removal efficiency at pH 5.The turbidity removal is inefficient at pH 10.However,guar gum has shown high turbidity removal with 80%transmission at pH 10 in the presence of a KNO3 electrolyte. 展开更多

Rapid flocculation and settlement(FS)of mine tailings is significant for the improvement and development of the filling process,whereas the settlement velocity(SV)of tailings in FS has been recognized as a key parameter to evaluate the settlement effect.However,the influence of temperature on the SV and its mechanism have not been studied.FS experiments on tailings with various ambient temperatures were carried out.The SVs of tailings with a solid waste content of 10wt%and an anionic polyacrylamide content of 20 g·t^−1 were measured at different temperatures.The SV presented an“N”-shaped variation curve as the temperature changed from 5 to 40℃.The mechanism of these results can be explained from the perspective of the electric double-layer repulsive force,molecular dynamics,and the polymer flocculation principle,as revealed from the scanning electron microscopy of floc particles.The findings will be beneficial in the design of tailings dewatering processes and save costs in the production of cemented paste backfill. 展开更多

Objective To study the characteristics of a bioflocculant named MBF7 produced by Penicillum strain HHE-P7 and the effects of cultivation conditions on bioflocculant production. Methods The chemical group in the bioflocculant molecules was shown by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, and the average molecular weight of MBF7 was estimated by gel permeation chromatography. The effects of medium components on bioflocculant production and flocculating activity were studied. Results Phospho-, amino-, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups were the major fractions of MBF7, and the molecule weight was about 3.0 × 10^5 Da. In addition, the carbon and nitrogen sources favorable for the bioflocculant production were glucose and yeast extract respectively. When the initial pH of the medium was adjusted to 5.0, high flocculant efficiency could be achieved. Conclusion The bioflocculant MBF7 is a new macromolecule with high flocculating efficiency for Kaolin suspension, and could be produced under appropriate culture conditions. 展开更多

And then we studied the product by FTIR, UV-Vis, TG, DSC spectrometeries and viscometry, etc. We also performed CACM′s water treat experiment. A new quaternary ammonium salt monomer was synthesized and a quaternary amination of lignin( noted as QL), with the monomer was carried out by grafting copolymerization. The products were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy( FTIR). The experimental results indicate that the yield of the monomer was 99.06%, and the conversion of the monomer and the grafting yield of QL were 93.69% and 185.78%, respectively. The feasibility of QL as the flocculant to be applied in color removal of five artificial dyes, erioehrome black T(dye A), gongo red(dye B ), direct fast black G (dye C ), cuprofix blue green B (dye D ), and acid black ATT (dye E ) was examined. Results show that OL exhihits the favorable flocculation nerformance and high stability. 展开更多

The oxidation rate of ferrous sulfate is investigated for the preparation of polyferric sulfate(PFS) coagulant. It is proved that this reaction is zero order with respect to Fe 2+ , first order with respect to NO 2(g), and first order with respect to the interface area between gas phase and liquid phase. According to this mechanism, sectionalized reactor(SR) is used in place of traditional reactor(TR), and the liquid of reaction mixture is recycled by pump. As a result, not only the flow path of reaction liquid is prolonged, but also gas liquid contact area enlarged, and the reaction distinctly accelerated, compared with traditional reactor. The effects of parameters including temperature, acidity and others on the reaction rate are also discussed. 展开更多

Hydrophobic flocculation pretreatment was performed to assess its effect on the recovery of fine cuprite in sulfidation-flotation. The results of the micro-flotation experiment showed that cuprite recovery is related to the particle size, and that an excessive content of fine particles(<18 μm) impacted the recovery of coarse particles. When hydrophobic flocculation pretreatment was used, the recovery of fine cuprite in sulfidation-flotation increased from 60.3% to 86.3% under optimum conditions(pH 9.5; sodium oleate concentration, 2 × 10^(-4) mol×L^(-1); stirring time, 6 min; stirring speed, 1600 r×min^(-1)). The laser particle size analysis and optical microscopy results indicate that hydrophobic flocculation pretreatment effectively reduces the content of fine cuprite, and augments the apparent particle size in the pulp. We performed the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek(DLVO) theory and extended DLVO theory calculations to further support the interpretation of the results. 展开更多
