The Drought, Flood and Waterlogging Damage (DFWD) study is related to many subjects such as meteorology and climatology, hydrology, geography, and agricultural science In the aforementioned subjects, substantial work has been done on DFWD study by a lot of researchers from the views of their specialities This paper tries to introduce the recent progress on the field Four main problems are referred to the DFWD study, they are as following: (1) The change sequence in historical period The historical data must be quantatitively processed For this purpose, many schemes were suggested in the past years Studies of the historical DFWD have been emphasized in the last fivehundred years as well as the other time scales (2) The mechanism and trigger event Natural disasters are related to factors disastrous to human activities in the evolution of physical environment, and they can reflect natural features of constitution of the physical environment The factors include the monsoon circulation, the sea tempereature effects, the ENSO, and the others (3) The loss estimation The DFWD is not a pure meteorological damage, and it is also a complex ecological damage The ecological effects, crop influences and other socialenvironment features will be considered on the estimation of DFWD loss (4) The measures of prevention and control Many forecast models are developed, and the measures of prevention and control are suggested, ie, the adoption of measures combining engineering techniques with biological measurres In the past years, advances have been made in those four aspects 展开更多

China is highly susceptible to flood disasters and subjected to great damage every year.Furthermore, the flood frequency has exhibited an increasing trend in recent years. Most flood events, including flash floods and river flood, are induced by rainfall. This study investigates annual variations of rainfall occurrence over China during the period from 2000 to 2015 at the national and regional scale using daily rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission. The Mann-Kendall test is performed for trend detection, and statistical data of flood damage published by China's government, including destroyed crop area, damaged buildings, direct economic loss, percentage of GDP(gross domestic product), and death toll are correlatively analysed with rainfall occurrences. The results show that storm rain events show the greatest variation among three rainfall types(moderate rain, heavy rain and storm rain). The variation coefficients of rainfall over Northeast China, North China, and Northwest China are the highest, whereas that for Southwest China is the smallest. Moderate rain, heavy rain over Central China, and moderate rain over Southwest China exhibits decreasing trends, whereas the remaining exhibit increasing trends. The correlation between the rainfall occurrences and these flood damage indices at the national scale shows that only direct economic loss has a strong positive correlation with rainfall occurrences, and the other indices have weaker correlations. The correlation is strong in three north regions, except for death toll in Northwest China. In contrast, the correlation between flood damage and rainfall is weak in East China, Central China, Southwest China, and South China. Overall, death toll is strongly correlated with the number of damaged buildings, implying that flood fatalities in China are likely associated with building collapse, and are dominated by specific extreme events. This study can provide a scientific reference for flood management in China. 展开更多

Compared with urban floods, dam-break floods are associated with greater uncertainties, including variable dam-break modes and hydrological characteristics, so conventional flood estimation methods cannot be directly applied in the estimation of dam-break flood loss. In particular, there is scant information regarding the conditions of affected area and hydrological characteristics in southwest China. In this paper, we introduce an integrated model for estimating flood loss that is adapted to the mountainous regions of southwestern China in light of the relative lack of available information. This model has three major components: a basic information model, a dam-routed flood propagation simulation model, and a loss estimation model. We established the basic information model despite the relative lack of available information using 3S technology [remote sensing (RS); geographical information system (GIS); global positioning system (GPS)], data mining technology, and statistical analysis techniques. Our dam-routed flood propagation simulation model consists of major hydrologic processes and their governing equations for flow propagation, which we solve using finite-difference schemes. In this model, the flood propagation area is divided into grids and each grid is determined by the characteristic parameters obtained from the propagation simulation. We present a case study of the Lianghekou hydropower station in Sichuan Province, China to illustrate the practical application of this integrated model for life loss estimation. © 2017, Tianjin University and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 展开更多

In this paper, the water equilibrium and ground truth are analyzed for '91.7' rainstormin Sihu drainage area, Hubei Province, China. The flood and waterlogging situation of ' 91.7'rainstorm in this area are investigated using remote sensing, especially the estimation of inundatedarea, the analysis of temporal and spatial characters of this flood and waterlogging damage. Andthe way of flood-trace using remote sensing is explored. At last, the disastroiis conditions are evalu-ated. 展开更多

Flood damage assessment(FDA)is a key component of risk-based method for flood management. In the current FDA approaches, generally the uniqueness of the building is disregarded in the analysis. Therefore, they are unfit for detailed applications in which case-by-case analysis of building damage is an essential requirement. This limitation is compounded by the use of incomplete and often low-quality data inputs about the building and the assumptions and approximations made regarding the geometry and materials of its components.Such shortcomings may result in incomplete and uncertain outcomes.Considering the benefits and increasing use of three-dimensional(3D)urban modeling and Building Information Model in various urban management processes,in this paper,an integrated framework for utilization of detailed 3D building models for the assessment and 3D visualization of flood damage to building according to its distinct behavior against flood is presented.A proof-ofconcept demonstration of the framework in a case study underlined the feasibility of implementation of the framework, which can potentially benefit a variety of users and be used as a complementary approach to the current FDA methods for improving the resilience of the community toward floods and their adverse impacts. 展开更多

In the context of global climate change and urbanization, urban flooding is an important type of natural disaster that affects urban development, especially in China, which is experiencing rapid urbanization. In the past 10 years, urban flooding events have caused huge disaster losses in Chinese cities. This has resulted in significant negative effects on the urban infrastructure, socioeconomic systems, and urban residents, thus causing widespread concern.Studies have confirmed the change in extreme rainstorms is due to the changing environments in many cities globally.Conducting studies on the impact of these rainstorms with different characteristics for urban flooding is valuable for coping with unfavorable situations. In addition, numerical simulations provide an economical and viable means to perform these studies. This paper presents a numerical model of Xiamen Island in China.Simulations were conducted for 12 design rainstorm events with different return periods, rain patterns, and durations. The results indicate that,in the case of an equal rainfall amount, the rainfall intensity is the key factor that affects the inundated area, depth, and damages. However, the rainfall intensity is not the only determining factor;the rainfall pattern also affects the inundations. In regard to the rainfall pattern,a higher rainfall peak coefficient usually leads to severe urban inundation and damage. As a result, the lag time would be shorter, which may further exacerbate the impact of urban flood disasters. The results of this study provide insights into managing flood risks, developing urban flood prevention strategies, and designing flood prevention measures. 展开更多

With the quasi-static analysis method, the terminal floating state of a damaged ship is usually evaluated for the risk assessment. But this is not enough since the ship has the possibility to lose its stability during the transient flooding process. Therefore, an enhanced smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) model is applied in this paper to investigate the response of a simplified cabin model under the condition of the transient water flooding. The enhanced SPH model is presented firstly including the governing equations, the diffusive terms, the boundary implementations and then an algorithm regarding the coupling motions of six degrees of freedom(6-DOF) between the structure and the fluid is described. In the numerical results, a non-damaged cabin floating under the rest condition is simulated. It is shown that a stable floating state can be reached and maintained by using the present SPH scheme. After that, three-dimensional(3-D) test cases of the damaged cabin with a hole at different locations are simulated. A series of model tests are also carried out for the validation. Fairly good agreements are achieved between the numerical results and the experimental data. Relevant conclusions are drawn with respect to the mechanism of the responses of the damaged cabin model under water flooding conditions. 展开更多
