Genetics and fitness costs of resistance to flupyradifurone in Bemisia tabaci from China

Flupyradifurone is a promising new insecticide used for controlling Bemisia tabaci during vegetable production.In this study,we assessed the fitness costs and mode of inheritance associated with resistance to flupyradifurone in B.tabaci by comparing the susceptible strain(MED-S)to one field-evolved flupyradifurone-resistant strain(WH-R,with 199-fold resistance)and one laboratory-selected flupyradifurone-resistant strain(FLU-SEL,with 124-fold resistance).Progenies of reciprocal crosses between WH-R and MED-S(F_(1A),F_(1B),and pooled F_(1)),and between FLU-SEL and MED-S(F_(1C),F_(1D),and pooled F_(1)’),showed varying degrees of dominance,indicating that resistance to flupyradifurone in WH-R was autosomal and incompletely dominant,yet in FLU-SEL it was autosomal and incompletely recessive.Furthermore,the development of resistance to flupyradifurone occurred at the expense of fitness costs for the resistant populations.Compared to the MED-S strain,WH-R showed a relative fitness of 0.50 with significantly prolonged developmental durations and reduced survival rates of the nymphal and pseudopupal stages,as well as decreased fecundity and hatchability.Similarly,FLU-SEL showed a relative fitness of 0.65 and also demonstrated prolonged developmental durations and reduced survival rates of nymphs and pseudopupae,as well as decreased hatchability in comparison with the MED-S strain.However,no significant differences in fecundity were observed between MED-S and FLU-SEL.The present study provides useful knowledge for formulating pest management strategies in the field,which will allow growers to slow the development of resistance to flupyradifurone and to sustainably control B.tabaci. 展开更多

The aboveground oligolectic bee,Heriades truncorum,is a particularly good model for studying the impact of pesticides on sexual communication,since some aspects of its mating behavior have previously been described.We have tested(1)the interference of the pesticide flupyradifurone on male precopulatory behavior and male mating partner preferences,(2)the way that the pesticide interferes in male quality assessment by the female,and(3)the effects of the pesticide on the chemical compounds in the female cuticle.We exposed bees of both sexes to a sublethal concentration of flupyradifurone.Various behaviors were registered in a mating arena with two females(one unexposed and one exposed)and one male(either unexposed or exposed).Unexposed males were quicker to attempt to mate.Treatment also impacted precopulatory behavior and male quality assessment by females.Males approached unexposed females more quickly than insecticideexposed ones.Females exposed to insecticide produced lower amounts of some cuticular hydrocarbons(sex pheromone candidates)and appeared less choosy than unexposed females.Our findings suggest that insecticide exposure affects sexual communication,playing a role both in male preference and in male quality assessment by the female. 展开更多

Preliminary bioassa... A series of novel 5?alkoxyfuran-2(5H)-one derivatives was synthesized, and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. Biological activities of all the title compounds were evaluated systematically. Preliminary bioassays indicated that most of the compounds exhibited moderate insecticidal activities against Aphis craccivora and Nilaparvata lugens at 100 mg/L. Compounds 4h and 4w exhibited 100% mortality rate against Aphis craccivora at 100 mg/L, and compound 4h exhibited good mortality rate against Aphis craccivora and Nilaparvata lugens (60% and 75%, respectively) even at 4 mg/L. The results demonstrated the impact of various chemical groups on insecticidal activities and provided a potential clue for further exploring novel high-effective broad-spectrum insecticides. 展开更多
