Fog computing has recently developed as a new paradigm with the aim of addressing time-sensitive applications better than with cloud computing by placing and processing tasks in close proximity to the data sources. However, the majority of the fog nodes in this environment are geographically scattered with resources that are limited in terms of capabilities compared to cloud nodes, thus making the application placement problem more complex than that in cloud computing. An approach for cost-efficient application placement in fog-cloud computing environments that combines the benefits of both fog and cloud computing to optimize the placement of applications and services while minimizing costs. This approach is particularly relevant in scenarios where latency, resource constraints, and cost considerations are crucial factors for the deployment of applications. In this study,we propose a hybrid approach that combines a genetic algorithm(GA)with the Flamingo Search Algorithm(FSA)to place application modules while minimizing cost.We consider four cost-types for application deployment:Computation, communication, energy consumption, and violations. The proposed hybrid approach is called GA-FSA and is designed to place the application modules considering the deadline of the application and deploy them appropriately to fog or cloud nodes to curtail the overall cost of the system. An extensive simulation is conducted to assess the performance of the proposed approach compared to other state-of-the-art approaches. The results demonstrate that GA-FSA approach is superior to the other approaches with respect to task guarantee ratio(TGR)and total cost. 展开更多

Fog computing is considered as a solution to accommodate the emergence of booming requirements from a large variety of resource-limited Internet of Things(IoT)devices. To ensure the security of private data,in this paper,we introduce a blockchain-enabled three-layer device-fog-cloud heterogeneous network.A reputation model is proposed to update the credibility of the fog nodes(FN),which is used to select blockchain nodes(BN)from FNs to participate in the consensus process.According to the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman(RSA)encryption algorithm applied to the blockchain system,FNs could verify the identity of the node through its public key to avoid malicious attacks.Additionally,to reduce the computation complexity of the consensus algorithms and the network overhead,we propose a dynamic offloading and resource allocation(DORA)algorithm and a reputation-based democratic byzantine fault tolerant(R-DBFT)algorithm to optimize the offloading decisions and decrease the number of BNs in the consensus algorithm while ensuring the network security.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could efficiently reduce the network overhead, and obtain a considerable performance improvement compared to the related algorithms in the previous literature. 展开更多

More devices in the Intelligent Internet of Things(AIoT)result in an increased number of tasks that require low latency and real-time responsiveness, leading to an increased demand for computational resources.Cloud computing’s low-latency performance issues in AIoT scenarios have led researchers to explore fog computing as a complementary extension. However, the effective allocation of resources for task execution within fog environments, characterized by limitations and heterogeneity in computational resources, remains a formidable challenge. To tackle this challenge,in this study,we integrate fog computing and cloud computing. We begin by establishing a fog-cloud environment framework, followed by the formulation of a mathematical model for task scheduling.Lastly,we introduce an enhanced hybrid Equilibrium Optimizer(EHEO)tailored for AIoT task scheduling. The overarching objective is to decrease both the makespan and energy consumption of the fog-cloud system while accounting for task deadlines. The proposed EHEO method undergoes a thorough evaluation against multiple benchmark algorithms, encompassing metrics likemakespan, total energy consumption, success rate, and average waiting time.Comprehensive experimental results unequivocally demonstrate the superior performance of EHEO across all assessed metrics.Notably,in the most favorable conditions,EHEO significantly diminishes both the makespan and energy consumption by approximately 50%and 35.5%,respectively,compared to the secondbest performing approach, which affirms its efficacy in advancing the efficiency of AIoT task scheduling within fog-cloud networks. 展开更多

In recent decades, fog computing has played a vital role in executing parallel computational tasks, specifically, scientific workflow tasks. In cloud data centers, fog computing takes more time to run workflow applications. Therefore,it is essential to develop effective models for Virtual Machine(VM)allocation and task scheduling in fog computing environments.Effective task scheduling,VM migration, and allocation, altogether optimize the use of computational resources across different fog nodes. This process ensures that the tasks are executed with minimal energy consumption, which reduces the chances of resource bottlenecks. In this manuscript, the proposed framework comprises two phases:(i)effective task scheduling using a fractional selectivity approach and(ii)VM allocation by proposing an algorithm by the name of Fitness Sharing Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization(FSCPSO).The proposed FSCPSO algorithm integrates the concepts of chaos theory and fitness sharing that effectively balance both global exploration and local exploitation. This balance enables the use of a wide range of solutions that leads to minimal total cost and makespan,in comparison to other traditional optimization algorithms. The FSCPSO algorithm’s performance is analyzed using six evaluation measures namely,Load Balancing Level(LBL),Average Resource Utilization(ARU),total cost, makespan, energy consumption, and response time.In relation to the conventional optimization algorithms, the FSCPSO algorithm achieves a higher LBL of 39.12%,ARU of 58.15%,a minimal total cost of 1175,and a makespan of 85.87 ms,particularly when evaluated for 50 tasks. 展开更多

The use of fog computing in the Internet of Things(IoT)has emerged as a crucial solution, bringing cloud services closer to end users to process large amounts of data generated within the system.Despite its advantages, the increasing task demands from IoT objects often overload fog devices with limited resources, resulting in system delays, high network usage, and increased energy consumption. One of the major challenges in fog computing for IoT applications is the efficient deployment of services between fog clouds. To address this challenge,we propose a novel Optimal Foraging Algorithm(OFA)for task placement on appropriate fog devices, taking into account the limited resources of each fog node. The OFA algorithm optimizes task sharing between fog devices by evaluating incoming task requests based on their types and allocating the services to the most suitable fog nodes. In our study,we compare the performance of the OFA algorithm with two other popular algorithms:Genetic Algorithm(GA)and Randomized Search Algorithm(RA).Through extensive simulation experiments, our findings demonstrate significant improvements achieved by the OFA algorithm.Specifically,it leads to up to 39.06%reduction in energy consumption for the Elektroensefalografi(EEG)application,up to 25.86%decrease in CPU utilization for the Intelligent surveillance through distributed camera networks(DCNS)application,up to 57.94%reduction in network utilization, and up to 23.83%improvement in runtime, outperforming other algorithms. As a result, the proposed OFA algorithm enhances the system’s efficiency by effectively allocating incoming task requests to the appropriate fog devices, mitigating the challenges posed by resource limitations and contributing to a more optimized IoT ecosystem. 展开更多

Despite the advances mobile devices have endured, they still remain resource-restricted computing devices,so there is a need for a technology that supports these devices. An emerging technology that supports such resource-con-strained devices is called fog computing.End devices can offload the task to close-by fog nodes to improve the quality of service and experience.Since com-putation offloading is a multiobjective problem,we need to consider many factors before taking offloading decisions, such as task length, remaining battery power, latency, communication cost, etc. This study uses the multiobjective grey wolf optimization(MOGWO)technique for optimizing offloading decisions. This is thefirst time MOGWO has been applied for computation offloading in fog com-puting.A gravity reference point method is also integrated with MOGWO to pro-pose an enhanced multiobjective grey wolf optimization(E-MOGWO)algorithm.Itfinds the optimal offloading target by taking into account two parameters,i.e.,energy consumption and computational time in a heterogeneous,scalable,multi-fog,multi-user environment. The proposed E-MOGWO is compared with MOG-WO,non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm(NSGA-II)and accelerated particle swarm optimization(APSO).The results showed that the proposed algorithm achieved better results than existing approaches regarding energy consumption, computational time and the number of tasks successfully executed. 展开更多

Although the Internet of Things has been widely applied, the problems of cloud computing in the application of digital smart medical Big Data collection, processing, analysis, and storage remain, especially the low efficiency of medical diagnosis. And with the wide application of the Internet of Things and Big Data in the medical field, medical Big Data is increasing in geometric magnitude resulting in cloud service overload, insufficient storage, communication delay, and network congestion. In order to solve these medical and network problems,a medical big-data-oriented fog computing architec-ture and BP algorithm application are proposed, and its structural advantages and characteristics are studied. This architecture enables the medical Big Data generated by medical edge devices and the existing data in the cloud service center to calculate, compare and analyze the fog node through the Internet of Things. The diagnosis results are designed to reduce the business processing delay and improve the diagnosis effect.Considering the weak computing of each edge device, the artificial intelligence BP neural network algorithm is used in the core computing model of the medical diagnosis system to improve the system computing power, enhance the medical intelligence-aided decision-making,and improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment efficiency. In the application process, combined with the characteristics of medical Big Data technology, through fog architecture design and Big Data technology integration,we could research the processing and analysis of heterogeneous data of the medical diagnosis system in the context of the Internet of Things. The results are promising:The medical platform network is smooth, the data storage space is sufficient, the data processing and analysis speed is fast, the diagnosis effect is remarkable, and it is a good assistant to doctors’treatment effect. It not only effectively solves the problem of low clinical diagnosis, treatment efficiency and quality, but also reduces the waiting time of patients, effectively solves the contradiction between doctors and patients, and improves the medical service quality and management level. 展开更多

Fog computing is a rapidly growing technology that aids in pipelining the possibility of mitigating breaches between the cloud and edge servers. It facil-itates the benefits of the network edge with the maximized probability of offering interaction with the cloud. However, the fog computing characteristics are suscep-tible to counteract the challenges of security. The issues present with the Physical Layer Security(PLS)aspect in fog computing which included authentication, integrity, and confidentiality has been considered as a reason for the potential issues leading to the security breaches. In this work, the Octonion Algebra-inspired Non-Commutative Ring-based Fully Homomorphic Encryption Scheme(NCR-FHE)was proposed as a secrecy improvement technique to overcome the impersonation attack in cloud computing. The proposed approach was derived through the benefits of Octonion algebra to facilitate the maximum security for big data-based applications. The major issues in the physical layer security which may potentially lead to the possible security issues were identified. The potential issues causing the impersonation attack in the Fog computing environment were identified. The proposed approach was compared with the existing encryption approaches and claimed as a robust approach to identify the impersonation attack for the fog and edge network. The computation cost of the proposed NCR-FHE is identified to be significantly reduced by 7.18%,8.64%,9.42%,and 10.36%in terms of communication overhead for varying packet sizes, when compared to the benchmarked ECDH-DH,LHPPS,BF-PHE and SHE-PABF schemes. 展开更多

In a network environment composed of different types of computing centers that can be divided into different layers(clod, edge layer, and others),the interconnection between them offers the possibility of peer-to-peer task offloading. For many resource-constrained devices, the computation of many types of tasks is not feasible because they cannot support such computations as they do not have enough available memory and processing capacity. In this scenario,it is worth considering transferring these tasks to resource-rich platforms, such as Edge Data Centers or remote cloud servers. For different reasons,it is more exciting and appropriate to download various tasks to specific download destinations depending on the properties and state of the environment and the nature of the functions. At the same time, establishing an optimal offloading policy, which ensures that all tasks are executed within the required latency and avoids excessive workload on specific computing centers is not easy. This study presents two alternatives to solve the offloading decision paradigm by introducing two well-known algorithms,Graph Neural Networks(GNN)and Deep Q-Network(DQN).It applies the alternatives on a well-known Edge Computing simulator called PureEdgeSimand compares them with the two defaultmethods,Trade-Off and Round Robin.Experiments showed that variants offer a slight improvement in task success rate and workload distribution. In terms of energy efficiency, they provided similar results. Finally, the success rates of different computing centers are tested, and the lack of capacity of remote cloud servers to respond to applications in real-time is demonstrated. These novel ways of finding a download strategy in a local networking environment are unique as they emulate the state and structure of the environment innovatively, considering the quality of its connections and constant updates. The download score defined in this research is a crucial feature for determining the quality of a download path in the GNN training process and has not previously been proposed.Simultaneously, the suitability of Reinforcement Learning(RL)techniques is demonstrated due to the dynamism of the network environment, considering all the key factors that affect the decision to offload a given task, including the actual state of all devices. 展开更多

With the dawning of the Internet of Everything(IoE) era, more and more novel applications are being deployed. However, resource constrained devices cannot fulfill the resource-requirements of these applications. This paper investigates the computation offloading problem of the coexistence and synergy between fog computing and cloud computing in IoE by jointly optimizing the offloading decisions, the allocation of computation resource and transmit power. Specifically, we propose an energy-efficient computation offloading and resource allocation(ECORA) scheme to minimize the system cost. The simulation results verify the proposed scheme can effectively decrease the system cost by up to 50% compared with the existing schemes, especially for the scenario that the computation resource of fog computing is relatively small or the number of devices increases. 展开更多

Fog computing is an emerging paradigm of cloud computing which to meet the growing computation demand of mobile application. It can help mobile devices to overcome resource constraints by offloading the computationally intensive tasks to cloud servers. The challenge of the cloud is to minimize the time of data transfer and task execution to the user, whose location changes owing to mobility, and the energy consumption for the mobile device. To provide satisfactory computation performance is particularly challenging in the fog computing environment. In this paper, we propose a novel fog computing model and offloading policy which can effectively bring the fog computing power closer to the mobile user. The fog computing model consist of remote cloud nodes and local cloud nodes, which is attached to wireless access infrastructure. Fog computing is a new paradigm providing network services such as computing, storage between the end users and cloud. The distributed and open structure are the characteristics of fog computing, which make it vulnerable and very weak to security threats. In this article, the interaction between vulnerable nodes and malicious nodes in the fog computing is investigated as a non-cooperative differential game. The complex decision making process is reviewed and analyzed. To solve the game, a fictitious play-based algorithm is which the vulnerable node and the malicious nodes reach a feedback Nash equilibrium. We attain optimal strategy of energy consumption with Qo S guarantee for the system, which are conveniently operated and suitable for fog nodes. The system simulation identifies the propagation of malicious nodes. We also determine the effects of various parameters on the optimal strategy. The simulation results support a theoretical foundation to limit malicious nodes in fog computing, which can help fog service providers make the optimal dynamic strategies when different types of nodes dynamically change their strategies. 展开更多

Fog computing is an emerging architecture intended for alleviating the network burdens at the cloud and the core network by moving resource-intensive functionalities such as computation, communication, storage, and analytics closer to the End Users (EUs). In order to address the issues of energy efficiency and latency requirements for the time-critical Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, fog computing systems could apply intelligence features in their operations to take advantage of the readily available data and computing resources. In this paper, we propose an approach that involves device-driven and human-driven intelligence as key enablers to reduce energy consumption and latency in fog computing via two case studies. The first one makes use of the machine learning to detect user behaviors and perform adaptive low-latency Medium Access Control (MAC)-layer scheduling among sensor devices. Vehicular fog computing(VFC)has been envisioned as an important application of fog computing in vehicular networks.Parked vehicles with embedded computation resources could be exploited as a supplement for VFC.They cooperate with fog servers to process offloading requests at the vehicular network edge, leading to a new paradigm called parked vehicle assisted fog computing(PVFC).However, each coin has two sides. There is a follow-up challenging issue in the distributed and trustless computing environment. The centralized computation offloading without tamper-proof audit causes security threats. It could not guard against false-reporting,free-riding behaviors, spoofing attacks and repudiation attacks. Thus,we leverage the blockchain technology to achieve decentralized PVFC.Request posting, workload undertaking, task evaluation and reward assignment are organized and validated automatically through smart contract executions.Network activities in computation offloading become transparent, verifiable and traceable to eliminate security risks. To this end,we introduce network entities and design interactive smart contract operations across them. The optimal smart contract design problem is formulated and solved within the Stackelberg game framework to minimize the total payments for users.Security analysis and extensive numerical results are provided to demonstrate that our scheme has high security and efficiency guarantee. 展开更多

Efficient and effective data acquisition is of theoretical and practical importance in WSN applications because data measured and collected by WSN is often unreliable, such as those often accompanied by noise and error, missing values or inconsistent data. Motivated by fog computing, which focuses on how to effectively offload computation-intensive tasks from resource-constrained devices, this paper proposes a simple but yet effective data acquisition approach with the ability of filtering abnormal data and meeting the real-time requirement. Our method uses a cooperation mechanism by leveraging on both an architectural and algorithmic approach. Firstly, the sensor node with the limited computing resource only accomplishes detecting and marking the suspicious data using a light weight algorithm. Secondly, the cluster head evaluates suspicious data by referring to the data from the other sensor nodes in the same cluster and discard the abnormal data directly. Thirdly, the sink node fills up the discarded data with an approximate value using nearest neighbor data supplement method. Through the architecture, each node only consumes a few computational resources and distributes the heavily computing load to several nodes. Simulation results show that our data acquisition method is effective considering the real-time outlier filtering and the computing overhead. 展开更多
