This paper discusses to what extent land is considered in food-related policies from a systemic perspective.Based on existing literature and international agendas priorities,we argue that access to and preservation of land for food along the food chain play a major role in sustainable food systems. To further explore this argument,we address the following question:Where does land stand in sectorial and national food-related policies? The mul-tiple dimensions and implications of food systems and the international agenda’s priorities namely the“Right to adequate Food”,“Food Sovereignty”and the“Right to Land”,were used as our conceptual framework. To work out how land is being considered in food sectorial policies, both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to examine ten Portuguese national food-related policies. Results are showing a lack of consideration for land access and land preservation, needed all along the food chain to build a national sustainable food system. On the other hand, there is a gap between current grassroots priorities international agendas and food-related national policies.Such a situation strongly suggests that building a sustainable food system needs a clear food territorial perspective, still neglected, and shifting from sectorial policies towards a more integrated food system approach, that will include land as a central piece. 展开更多

This study provides an economics assessment of various food safety measures in China. A choice experiment approach is used to elicit Chinese consumer preferences for various food safety attributes using data from a 2008 urban consumer survey. An alternative welfare calculation is used to model aggregate market impacts of select food safety measures. Our results show that the largest welfare gains are found in the current government-run certiifcation program. The implementation of a third-party certiifcation system, a traceability network and a product label would generate signiifcant value and would help reduce current system inefifciencies in China. This study builds on previous research and provides an alternative approach for calculating consumer valuation of safety and quality attributes that can be used to estimate aggregate economic and welfare impacts. 展开更多

This special issue is focused on grain legumes, which belong to the Fabaceae family.Legumes are the second largest family of plants in the world after the grasses and are key components of manmade and natural ecosystems[1–3].They provide the environmental service of nitrogen fixation,so essential to soil construction and fertility maintenance, and are thus essential to agricultural systems[4,5].Different species of legumes range from huge trees to shrubs 展开更多

This study evaluated the impacts of food safety policies on Japan's Simultaneous Buy and Sell rice imports through measuring tariff equivalents of food safety policies. In order to construct an estimated model,a Japanese consumer's utility function is introduced and developed with consumer's preference parameters and elasticity of substitution. In the empirical study part,Japan's positive list system and rice traceability were analyzed and assessed as critical food safety policies. Results showed that after the implementation of the positive list system, consumers'preference for foreign rice and the substitution elasticity diminished. This decreasing tendency was quite similar to the results after the enforcement of rice traceability. The tariff equivalents of food safety policies on imported rice fluctuated around ¥50 yen/kg from fiscal year 2000 to 2005 and decreased because of the global grain price hike after 2006.The tariff equivalents soared in 2010,which was induced by the traceability regulation, and then dulled during Japan's earthquake and tsunami in 2011.Subsequently,after the recovery from natural disasters, the tariff equivalents of food safety policies became higher. Therefore, food safety policies had made imported rice less attractive, weakened the competitive power of rice exporting countries, and had statistically significant impacts on Japan's rice importation. 展开更多

INTRODUCTION:In the recent decades,a global effort from food suppliers, industries, and governments has ensured that food production would meet the high quality required by the sanitary authorities, minimizing public health implications and economic losses caused by food-borne diseases.BACKGROUND:Several programmes and initiatives have been developed worldwide both by government agencies and the private sector to achieve this goal.Food-borne diseases, caused by pathogens, natural toxins, and chemical contaminants, remain a global public health challenge, since new threats are continuously emerging while others are being controlled. Also,in many countries, the consumption of food prepared outside the home increases the exposure to the risks posed by poor hygiene in food service. In this context,a reliable sanitary surveillance system is urgently needed to identify potential hazards, conduct risk analysis, and control food-borne diseases outbreaks worldwide.BRAZILIAN SAFETY POLICIES AND REGULATORY FRAMEWORKS:Brazil national agencies are tasked with controlling the hazards in the food chain by means of federal regulations based on a set of global sanitary authorities’guidelines.CONCLUSION:The occurrence of food-borne diseases, control measures, policies, and regulatory frameworks in Brazil drawn to ensure the quality and safety of food are presented in this paper. 展开更多
