In situ calibrating optical tweezers with sinusoidal-wave drag force method

We introduce a corrected sinusoidal-wave drag force method (SDFM) into optical tweezers to calibrate the trapping stiffness of the optical trap and conversion factor (CF) of photodetectors. First, the theoretical analysis and experimental result demonstrate that the correction of SDFM is necessary, especially the error of no correction is up to 11.25% for a bead of 5μm in diameter. Second, the simulation results demonstrate that the SDFM has a better performance in the calibration of optical tweezers than the triangular-wave drag force method (TDFM) and power spectrum density method (PSDM) at the same signal-to-noise ratio or trapping stiffness. Third, in experiments, the experimental standard deviations of calibration of trapping stiffness and CF with the SDFM are about less than 50% of TDFM and PSDM especially at low laser power. Finally, the experiments of stretching DNA verify that the in situ calibration with the SDFM improves the measurement stability and accuracy. 展开更多

An computationally efficient damage identification technique for the planar and space truss structures is presented based on the force method and the micro ge-netic algorithm.For this purpose,the general equilibrium equations and the kinematic relations in which the reaction forces and the displacements at nodes are take into ac-count,respectively,are formulated.The compatibility equations in terms of forces are explicitly presented using the singular value decomposition(SVD)technique.Then governing equations with unknown reaction forces and initial elongations are derived.Next,the micro genetic algorithm(MGA)is used to properly identify the site and ex-tent of multiple damage cases in truss structures.In order to verify the accuracy and the superiority of the proposed damage detection technique,the numerical solutions are presented for the planar and space truss models.The numerical results indicate that the combination of the force method and the MGA can provide a reliable tool to accurately and efficiently identify the multiple damages of the truss structures. 展开更多

First, the complementary energy of an element is described by taking the base forces as state variables, and is then separated into deformation and rotation parts for the case of large deformation. Second, the control equations of the BFEM based on the complementary energy principle are derived using the Lagrange multiplier method. Nonlinear procedure of the BFEM is then developed. In loosely coupled or large-scale problems with high dominance ratios,slow fission source convergence can take extremely long time,reducing Monte Carlo(MC)criticality calculation efficiency.Although various acceleration methods have been developed,some methods cannot reduce convergence times,whereas others have been limited to specific problem geometries.In this study,a new fission source convergence acceleration(FSCA)method,the forced propagation(FP)method,has been proposed,which forces the fission source to propagate and accelerate fission source convergence.Additionally,some stabilization techniques have been designed to render the method more practical.The resulting stabilized method was then successfully implemented in the MC transport code,and its feasibility and effectiveness were tested using the modified OECD/NEA,one-dimensional slab benchmark,and the Hoogenboom full-core problem.The comparison results showed that the FP method was able to achieve efficient FSCA. 展开更多

Each joint of hydraulic drive quadruped robot is driven by the hydraulic drive unit(HDU), and the contacting between the robot foot end and the ground is complex and variable, which increases the difficulty of force control inevitably. In the recent years, although many scholars researched some control methods such as disturbance rejection control, parameter self-adaptive control, impedance control and so on, to improve the force control performance of HDU, the robustness of the force control still needs improving. Therefore, how to simulate the complex and variable load characteristics of the environment structure and how to ensure HDU having excellent force control performance with the complex and variable load characteristics are key issues to be solved in this paper. The force control system mathematic model of HDU is established by the mechanism modeling method, and the theoretical models of a novel force control compensation method and a load characteristics simulation method under different environment structures are derived, considering the dynamic characteristics of the load stiffness and the load damping under different environment structures. Then, simulation effects of the variable load stiffness and load damping under the step and sinusoidal load force are analyzed experimentally on the HDU force control performance test platform, which provides the foundation for the force control compensation experiment research. In addition, the optimized PID control parameters are designed to make the HDU have better force control performance with suitable load stiffness and load damping, under which the force control compensation method is introduced, and the robustness of the force control system with several constant load characteristics and the variable load characteristics respectively are comparatively analyzed by experiment. The research results indicate that if the load characteristics are known, the force control compensation method presented in this paper has positive compensation effects on the load characteristics variation, i.e., this method decreases the effects of the load characteristics variation on the force control performance and enhances the force control system robustness with the constant PID parameters, thereby, the online PID parameters tuning control method which is complex needs not be adopted. All the above research provides theoretical and experimental foundation for the force control method of the quadruped robot joints with high robustness. 展开更多

Based on the review of present force coefficients estimation methods, a new method in the frequency domain, revised cross-spectrum estimation method, is presented in this paper. Some experiments on the wave-current force on inclined cylinders are also described and the wave current force coefficients are estimated by the revised cross-spectrum estimation method. From the results, it is found that the wave and current directions have some regular effect on the coefficients. According to the results, some empirical formulas are obtained for converting the wave-current force coefficients on inclined cylinders into a unified coefficient. Comparisons show that the unified coefficients are in good agreement with other results. 展开更多

Arc-length-type and energy-type methods are two main strategies used in structural nonlinear tracing analysis, but the former is widely used due to the explicitness and clarity in conception, as well as the convenience and reliability in calculation. It is very important to trace the complete load-deflection path in order to know comprehensively the characteristics of structures subjected to loads. Unfortunately, the nonlinear analysis techniques are only workable for tracing the limit-point-type equilibrium path. For the bifurcation-point-type path, most of them cannot secure a satisfactory result. In this paper, main arc-length-type methods are reviewed and compared, and the possible reasons of failures in tracing analysis are briefly discussed. Some improvements are proposed, a displacement perturbation method and a force perturbation method are presented for tracing the bifurcation-point-type paths. Finally, two examples are analyzed to verify the ideas, and some conclusions are drawn with respect to the arc-length-type methods. 展开更多

In this paper, the effect of van der Waals (vdW) force on the pull-in behavior of electrostatically actuated nano/micromirrors is investigated. First, the minimum po- tential energy principle is utilized to find the equation gov- erning the static behavior of nano/micromirror under electro- static and vdW forces. Then, the stability of static equilib- rium points is analyzed using the energy method. It is found that when there exist two equilibrium points, the smaller one is stable and the larger one is unstable. The effects of dif- ferent design parameters on the mirror's pull-in angle and pull-in voltage are studied and it is found that vdW force can considerably reduce the stability limit of the mirror. At the end, the nonlinear equilibrium equation is solved numer- ically and analytically using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). It is observed that a sixth order perturbation approx- imation can precisely model the mirror's behavior. The re- suits of this paper can be used for stable operation design and safe fabrication of torsional nano/micro actuators. 展开更多

In this paper, a collocation technique with the modified equilibrium on line method (ELM) for imposition of Neumann (natural) boundary conditions is presented for solving the two-dimensional problems of linear elastic body vibrations. In the modified ELM, equilibrium over the lines on the natural boundary is satisfied as Neumann boundary condition equations. In other words, the natural boundary conditions are satisfied naturally by using the weak formulation. The performance of the modified version of the ELM is studied for collocation methods based on two different ways to construct meshless shape functions: moving least squares approximation and radial basis point interpolation. Numerical examples of two-dimensional free and forced vibration analyses show that by using the modified ELM, more stable and accurate results would be obtained in comparison with the direct collocation method. 展开更多

The cavitating flow around a Delft Twist-11 hydrofoil is simulated using the large eddy simulation approach.The volume-of-fluid method incorporated with the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model is utilized to track the water-vapor interface.Adaptive mesh refinement(AMR)is also applied to improve the simulation accuracy automatically.Two refinement levels are conducted to verify the dominance of AMR in predicting cavitating flows.Results show that cavitation features,including the U-type structure of shedding clouds,are consistent with experimental observations.Even a coarse mesh can precisely capture the phase field without increasing the total cell number significantly using mesh adaption.The predicted shedding frequency agrees fairly well with the experimental data under refinement level 2.This study illustrates that AMR is a promising approach to achieve accurate simulations for multiscale cavitating flows within limited computational costs.Finally,the force element method is currently adopted to investigate the lift and drag fluctuations during the evolution of cavitation structure.The mechanisms of lift and drag fluctuations due to cavitation and the interaction between vorticity forces and cavitation are explicitly revealed. 展开更多

Automatic extraction method of force chain information and its application in the flow photoelastic experiment of granular matter

The force chain is the core of the multi-scale analysis of granular matter.Accurately extracting the force chain information among particles is of great significance to the study of particle mechanics and geological hazards caused by particle flow.However,in the photoelastic experiment,the precise identification of the branching points of force chains has not been effectively realized.Therefore,this study proposes an automatic extraction method of force chain key information.First,based on the Hough transform and the Euclidean distance,a particle geometric information identification model is established and geometric information such as particle circle center coordinates,radius,contact point location,and contact angle is extracted.Then,a particle contact force information identification model is established following the color gradient mean square method.The model realizes the rapid calibration and extraction of a large number of particle media contact force information.Next,combined with the force chain composition criterion and its quasilinear feature,an automatic extraction method of force chain information is established,which solves the problem of the accurate identification of the force chain branch points.Finally,in the photoelastic experiment of ore drawing from a single drawpoint,the automatic extraction method of force chain information is verified.The results show that the macroscopic distribution of force chains during ore drawing from a single drawpoint is left–right symmetrical.Strong force chains are mostly located on the two sides of the model but in small numbers and they mainly develop vertically.Additionally,the ends are mostly in a combination of Y and inverted Y shapes,while the middle is mostly quasilinear.Weak force chains are abundant and mostly distributed in the middle of the model,and develop in different directions.The proposed extraction method accurately extracts the force chain network from the photoelastic experiment images and dynamically characterizes the force chains of granular matter,which has significant advantages in particle geometry information extraction,force chain branch point discrimination,force chain retrieval,and force chain distribution and its azimuthal characterization.The results provide a scientific basis for studying the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical parameters of granular matter. 展开更多

Modeling wave propagation across rock masses using an enriched 3D numerical manifold method

The three-dimensional numerical manifold method(3DNMM) method is further enriched to simulate wave propagation across homogeneous/jointed rock masses. For the purpose of minimizing negative effects from artificial boundaries, a viscous nonreflecting boundary, which can effectively absorb the energy of a wave, is firstly adopted to enrich 3DNMM. Then, to simulate the elastic recovery property of an infinite problem domain, a viscoelastic boundary, which is developed from the viscous nonreflecting boundary, is further adopted to enrich 3DNMM. Finally, to eliminate the noise caused by scattered waves, a force input method which can input the incident wave correctly is incorporated into 3DNMM. Five typical numerical tests on P/S-wave propagation across jointed/homogeneous rock masses are conducted to validate the enriched 3DNMM. Numerical results indicate that wave propagation problems within homogeneous and jointed rock masses can be correctly and reliably modeled with the enriched 3DNMM. 展开更多

Exoskeletons are designed to control the forces exerted during the physical coupling between the human and the machine.Since the human is an active system,the control of an exoskeleton requires coordinated action between the machine and the load so to obtain a reciprocal adaptation.Humans in the control loop can be modeled as active mechanical loads whose stiffness is continuously changing.The direct measurement of human stiffness is difficult to obtain in real-time,thus posing a significant limitation to the design of wearable robotics controllers.Electromyographic(EMG)recordings can provide an indirect estimation of human muscle force and stiffness,but current methods for the acquisition of the signals limit their use and efficiency.This work proposes a hybrid method for the estimation of upper limb joint stiffness during reaching movements that combines EMG-driven muscle models and constrained optimization.Using these two stages process,we estimated an optimal joints’stiffness bounded in a physiologically sound variability range.This information is crucial when designing exoskeletons user interfaces in which the limb stiffness is an integral part of the control loop.Point-to-point human reaching movements were analyzed to reconstruct the joint stiffness of the upper limb.An accurate 3D model of the arm,encompassing all bones from the hand to the scapula and the majority of the upper limb muscles,was developed to represent the sliding center of rotation of the joints.A well-posed parallel mechanism between the skeleton and the configuration of the tracking markers was implemented.Thus,the muscles’force and joint stiffness were calculated using a generalized pseudo-inversion of the Jacobian transformation between the muscles and Cartesian Space.The maximal and minimal forces exertable by the muscles were set as the boundary condition for the generalized pseudo-inverse by means of a state-of-the-art muscle model. 展开更多
