Superfine copper particles could be directly prepared from waste printed circuit boards by slurry electrolysis.Meanwhile,copper fractal growth could be observed.To better understand this phenomenon,the factors that af...Superfine copper particles could be directly prepared from waste printed circuit boards by slurry electrolysis.Meanwhile,copper fractal growth could be observed.To better understand this phenomenon,the factors that affect copper dendrites in a point-cathode system were discussed in detail.These results showed that the fractal degree of copper dendrites increased as the increase of applied voltage and the decrease of copper sulfate and gelatin concentrations.Sodium lauryl sulfate and hydrochloric acid concentrations could not significantly impact the fractal degree of copper dendrites,while gelatin concentration could.The minimum copper fractal dimension was 1.069 when gelatin and copper sulfate concentration was 120 mg/L and 0.1 mol/L,respectively with an applied voltage of 11 V.Moreover,the results diffusion-limited aggregation model demonstrated that particle translational speed,particle numbers and binding probability significantly affected copper dendrite patterns.The scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the three additives greatly affected the refinement of the copper crystal.These findings contribute to enrich the theoretical study on metals recovery from e-waste by slurry electrolysis.展开更多

The results s...The microscopic visualization experiment on the formation process of HCFC-141b refrigerant gas hydrate has been investigated, and the morphological photos of hydrate formation process have been obtained. The results show that gas hydrate originally nucleated on the interface of refrigerant HCFC-141b and water under the condition of supercooling, then the hydrate grows continually due to the inducement of formed nucleation and diffusion of refrigerant. The formation of gas hydrate presents an arboreous phenomenon. The fractal dimension of the hydrate formation morphology on different stages was calculated. The calculating results indicate that the initial stage of the hydrate formation belongs to fractal growth, and the dimension is about 1.52. Based on the fractal theory, an RIN-DLA (random inducement nucleation-diffusion limited aggregation) model for the HCFC-141b hydrate growth was developed. The hydrate growth process was simulated with the developed model, and the fractal dimension for the simulated morphology is well compared with that from the experiment.展开更多

Different energy temperature factors phi(T) are employed during crack formation and propagation process with a uniform dilation strain case and a shear case and with periodic boundary condition in the horizontal direction. Our results show that the patterns of the cracks generated are fractal structure and the effective fractal dimensionalities decrease with the increase of the temperature factor phi(T)(the absolute temperature T decreasing). In the paper we also discuss the relation between the effective fractal dimension D-eff (the radius R(g) of gyration) and the fractal dimensions D (the radius R of circular), and also give their modification values Omega about two kinds of methods in the lattice model.展开更多

A large urban developmen...Urban growth prediction has acquired an important consideration in urban sustainability. An effective approach of urban prediction can be a valuable tool in urban decision making and planning. A large urban development has been occurred during last decade in the touristic village of Pogonia Etoloakarnanias, Greece, where an urban growth of 57.5% has been recorded from 2003 to 2011. The prediction of new urban settlements was achieved using fractals and theory of chaos. More specifically, it was found that the urban growth is taken place within a Sierpinski carpet. Several shapes of Sierpinski carpets were tested in order to find the most appropriate, which produced an accuracy percentage of 70.6% for training set and 81.8% for validation set. This prediction method can be effectively applied in urban growth modelling, once cities are fractals and urban complexity can be successfully described through a Sierpinski tessellation.展开更多

This model can be applied to predict the space body heat fractal growth and study its directional region control. When the nonlinear interference term and the inner heat source term are generalized functions, the relationship between the particle aggregation probability and the interference terms can be obtained using the norm theory. We can then predict the aggregation form of particles in different regions. When the nonlinear interference terms in the model are expressed as a trigonometric function and its composite function, our simulations show that the DRC method of thermal fractal diffusion is effective and has reference value for the directional control of actual fractal growth systems.展开更多

By means of fractal geometric theory of non linear science, the fractal character of growth pattern of reed, for the purpose of quantitatively exploring the mechanism of reed growth was studied. The way to calculate fractal dimension of reed growth is box dimension (BD) and information dimension (ID). The results showed that the difference between two samplings in May and those among three samplings in June and later were not remarkable for both BD or ID. It was noted that the difference between samplings in and after May is significant. It was demonstrated that the fractal dimension of size distribution of reed ranged from 0 6235 to 0 8761 The distribution pattern could be statistically divided as two significant periods: the size of reed is quite well distributed at the beginning of reed growth (fractal dimension>0 8), but is irregular in the middle and later growth season (fractal dimension<0 7). These results are benefit to reach the goal of rational use of reed resources and to protect the biodiversity in wetland ecosystem.展开更多

Through biaxial compression experiments, the influence of both the number of pre-cracks and pre-cracks angles to crack growth was analyzed. Meanwhile, species of rock bridge failure were summarized, namely, wing crack, secondary shear crack between horizontal pre-cracks and secondary shear crack between vertical pre-cracks. The wing crack plays a significant role in crack growth. Furthermore, fractal dimension was adopted to describe quantitatively the crack growth during the failure process. The results indicate that with the failure of specimens, corresponding fractal dimension for specimen monotonically increases, which indicates that the fractal dimension can be considered to the failure of the specimens quantitatively.展开更多
