Computational results are compared with those obtained by an RANS (RNG k-e) model as well as with experimental data. The sensitivity of the LES results to mesh resolution is also discussed. The results show that LES generally provides flow and spray characteristics in better agreement with experimental data than RANS; and that small-scale random vortical structures of the in-cylinder turbulent spray field can be captured by LES. Furthermore, the penetrations of fuel droplets and vapors calculated by LES are larger than the RANS result, and the sub-grid turbulent kinetic energy and sub-grid turbulent viscosity provided by the LES model are evidently less than those calculated by the RANS model. Finally, it is found that the initial swirl significantly affects the spray penetration and the distribution of fuel vapor within the combustion chamber.展开更多

Compared with diesel fuel, use of BE-diesel increased PM emissions by 14% due to the increase in the soluble organic fraction (SOF) of PM, but it greatly reduced the Bosch smoke number by 60%-80% according to the results from 13-mode test of European Stationary Cycle (ESC) test. The SCR catalyst was effective in NOx reduction by ethanol, and the NOx conversion was approximately 73%. Total hydrocarbons (THC) and CO emissions increased significantly during the SCR of NOx process. Two diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) assemblies were used after Ag/Al2O3 converter to remove CO and HC. Different oxidation catalyst showed opposite effect on PM emission. The PM composition analysis revealed that the net effect of oxidation catalyst on total PM was an integrative effect on SOF reduction and sulfate formation of PM. The engine bench test results indicated that the combination of BE-diesel and a SCR catalyst assembly could provide benefits for NOx and PM emissions control even without using diesel particle filters (DPFs).展开更多

However, the rapidly increasing price of fuel is seriously affecting the industry's viability. At present, outboard petrol engines are the preferred choice for use in small-scale fishing boats because they deliver the advantages of high speed and low weight, they are easy to install, and they use minimal space. Petrol outboard engines are known to consume a greater amount of fuel than inboard diesel engines, but installing diesel engines with conventional submerged propellers in existing small-scale fishing boats is not economically viable because major hullform modifications and extra expenditure are required to achieve this. This study describes a proposal to enable reductions in fuel consumption by introducing the combined use of a diesel engine and Surface-Piercing Propeller (SPP). An analysis of fuel consumption reduction is presented, together with an economic feasibility study. Resulting data reveal that the use of the proposed modifications would save 23.31 liters of fuel per trip (40.75%) compared to outboard motors, equaling annual savings of RM 3962 per year.展开更多

An engine test cycle was designed based on the ISO test code of off-road vehicle. Eight test conditions, combination of three engine speeds and eight engine loads, were applied to the engine endurance test, and the engine was operated for eight hours in a day. The simulation and its verification test were both carried out under the maximum torque point. Then, the oxygen enriched combustion was simulated on the model, and the simulated condition was oxygen volume fraction from 21% to 30%. The simulation results show that, the oxygen enrichment (from 21% to 30%) increases the peak cylinder pressure of 3.32%, advances the start of combustion of 1.6 deg and rises the peak of average temperature in cylinder and wall heat flux. Among them, at the condition of 24% O2, the change of the results is the most significant. Benzene (A1) is one of the precursors of soot generated, the analysis of its impress-cuts of the mass distribution field in cylinder shows that, the increase of oxygen concentration can significantly inhibit the formation of benzene. But the oxygen enrichment makes the combustion more sufficient, cased a rise in the cylinder temperature, an extension in high temperature area, and an increment in the NOx emission.展开更多

Most studies on oil consumption mechanism of the cylinder have been done by using the experimental method, however they are very costly. Therefore, it is very necessary to study oil consumption mechanism of the cylinder and obtain the accurate results by the calculation method. Firstly, four main modes of lubricating oil consumption in cylinder are analyzed and then the oil consumption rate under common working conditions are calculated for the four modes based on an engine. Then, the factors that affect the lubricating oil consumption such as working conditions, the second ring closed gap, the elastic force of the piston rings are also investigated for the four modes. The calculation results show that most of the lubricating oil is consumed by evaporation on the liner surface. Besides, there are three other findings: (1) The oil evaporation from the liner is determined by the working condition of an engine; (2) The increase of the ring closed gap reduces the oil blow through the top ring end gap but increases blow-by; (3) With the increase of the elastic force of the ring, both the left oil film thickness and the oil throw-off at the top ring decrease. The oil scraping of the piston top edge is consequently reduced while the friction loss between the rings and the liner increases. A neural network prediction model of the lubricating oil consumption in cylinder is established based on the BP neural network theory, and then the model is trained and validated. The main piston rings parameters which affect the oil consumption are optimized by using the BP neural network prediction model and the prediction accuracy of this BP neural network is within 8%, which is acceptable for normal engineering applications. The oil consumption is also measured experimentally. The relative errors of the calculated and experimental values are less than 10%, verifying the validity of the simulation results. Applying the established simulation model and the validated BP network model is able to generate numerical results with sufficient accuracy, which significantly reduces experimental work and provides guidance for the optimal design of the piston rings diesel engines.展开更多

This is because the flow is associated with large density variations. So, a detailed understanding of the flow and combustion processes is required to improve performance and reduce emissions without compromising fuel economy. The simulation carried out in the present work to model DI diesel engine with bowl in piston for better understanding of the in cylinder gas motion with details of the combustion process that are essential in evaluating the effects of ingesting synthetic atmosphere on engine performance. This is needed for the course of developing a non-air recycle diesel with exhaust management system [1]. A simulation was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLU- ENT. The turbulence and combustion processes are modeled with sufficient generality to include spray formation, delay period, chemical kinetics and on set of ignition. Results from the simulation compared well with that of experimental results. The model proved invaluable in obtaining details of the in cylinder flow patterns, combustion process and combustion species during the engine cycle. The results show that the model over predicting the maximum pressure peak by 6%, (p-θ), (p-v) diagrams for different engine loads are predicted. 文摘The effect of fin attachment on the thermal stress reduction of exhaust manifold of an off road diesel engine(Komatsu HD325-6) was investigated. For doing this, coupled thermo-fluid-solid analysis of exhaust manifold of the off road diesel engine was carried out.The thermal analysis, including thermal flow, thermal stress, and the thermal deformation of the manifold was investigated. The flow inside the manifold was simulated and then its properties including velocity, pressure, and temperature were obtained. The flow properties were transferred to the solid model and then the thermal stresses and the thermal deformations of the manifold under different operating conditions were calculated. Finally, based on the predicted thermal stresses and thermal deformations of the manifold body shell, two fin types as well as body shell thickness increase were applied in the critical induced thermal stress area of the manifold to reduce the thermal stress and thermal deformation. The results of the above modifications show that the combined modifications,i.e.the thickness increase and the fin attachment, decrease the thermal stresses by up to 28% and the contribution of the fin attachment in this reduction is much higher compared to the shell thickness increase.

文摘The performance and particulate emission of a diesel engine are affected by the consumption of lubricating oil. Applying the established simulation model and the validated BP network model is able to generate numerical results with sufficient accuracy, which significantly reduces experimental work and provides guidance for the optimal design of the piston rings diesel engines.

文摘In this study,a model is developed to simulate the dynamics of an internal combustion engine, and it is calibrated and validated against reliable experimental data, making it a tool that can effectively be adopted to conduct emission predictions. In this work, the Ricardo WAVE software is applied to the simulation of a particular marine diesel engine,a four-stroke engine used in the maritime field. Results from the bench tests are used for the calibration of the model. Finally, the calibration of the model and its validation with full-scale data measured at sea are presented. The prediction includes not only the classic engine operating parameters for a comparison with surveys but also an estimate of nitrogen oxide emissions, which are compared with similar results obtained with emission factors. The calibration of the model made it possible to obtain an overlap between the simulation results and real data with an average error of approximately 7%on power, torque, and consumption. The model provides encouraging results, suggesting further applications, such as in the study on transient conditions, coupling of the engine model with the ship model for a complete simulation of the operating conditions, and optimization studies on consumption and emissions. The availability of the emission data during the sea trial and validated simulation results are the strengths and novelties of this work.

文摘A hardware-in-the-loop simulating platform is developed to avoid designing defects caused by the complicated logical structure and multiple-functional buildup of the dectronic control unit(ECU)in modem diesel engines, and to diminish potential damages on components or human exposure to dangers in R&D en- deavor. This plat-form consists of a computer installed with software Matlab/Simulink/RTW and dSPACE/ ControlDesk; a diesel engine ECU, and a dSPACE autobox which runs a real-time diesel engine model. A typical model of diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler is presented. Based on this model our research is carried out with a real ECU to test its software control strategies. Results show that by using the diesel engine model downloaded inside, the hardware-in-the-loop platform can simulate diesel engine's working conditions and generate all kinds of sensor signals which ECU needs on a real-time basis. So the ECU control strategies can be validated and relevant parameters roughly calibrated.
文摘Fluid flow in an internal combustion engine presents one of the most challenging fluid dynamics problems to model. Also the study shows other engine parameters captured by the simulation such as engine emissions, fuel mass fraction, indicated gross work, ignition delay period and heat release rate.

文摘In order to accelerate the design of fuel cell(FC)/battery hybrid vehicles and optimize the related performance,a new modeling and simulation method for the fuel cell(FC)/battery hybrid vehicle was introduced in this paper. The co-simulation platform was set up by combining MATLAB/Simulink with AVL/Cruise,where the FC engine was realized in MATLAB/Simulink and the other most vehicle components were modeled in AVL/Cruise.The performance of a certain FC hybrid vehicle with the embedded FC engine was evaluated by using the platform.Simulation results show that this method of simulation can be applied for the design of power management strategy, power unit configuration, and performance evaluation of FC hybrid vehicles.
文摘A one-dimensional pipe flow model of single-cylinder diesel engine is established to investigate the intake and exhaust flow characteristics of diesel engine in the condition of high power density(HPD).A space-lime conservation element and solution element(CE/SE)method is used to derive the discrete equations of the partial differential equation for the intake and exhaust systems. The performance parameters of diesel engine with speed of 2100 r/min are simulated. The simulated results are in accordance with the experimental data. The effect of increased power density on charging coefficient is analyzed using a validated model. The results show that the charging coefficient is slowly improved with the increase in intake pressure, and is obviously reduced with the increase in engine speed.
