Functional Results without Correction of Cataract Surgery during a Free Campaign at Siguiri Prefectural Hospital in Guinea

Background: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world and its treatment is exclusively surgical. However, the results of cataract surgery are not always as good as is assumed and this aspect of surgical services needs a lot of attention. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the functional results of the free cataract surgery campaign carried out at the Siguiri Prefectural Hospital in Guinea. Patients and Method: This was a descriptive and retrospective cross-sectional study over a period of three months (1 October-31 December 2017). Records of cataract-operated patients during the study period were reviewed. The complete files for the main variables sought were retained. Sociodemographic data and visual acuity without pre- and post-operative correction were assessed. Functional outcomes were analysed according to WHO guidelines and recommendations for post-operative functional outcomes of cataract surgery. The data was collected and processed using Excel version 2010 software. Results: A total of 108 eyes from 102 patients were the subject of this present study on 314 eyes from 289 operated patients. 64 (%) men and 38 women (%) had a follow-up of 6 weeks after cataract surgery, a sex ratio of 1.68 in favor of women. The average age was 62.45 ± 15.20 years with extremes of 25 and 90 years. The age group from 60 to 69 years is the most represented with 46 cases or 45.45%. Housewives and farmers are the most represented strata with 42 cases (41.18%) and 31 cases (30.39%) respectively. The operative technique was Phaco A in 4/5 of the cases. No implant calculations were performed. Functional results indicate that 66% of patients had good visual acuity (≥3/10);29% of patients had borderline visual acuity (between 1/10 and 2/10) and 13.30% had poor visual acuity (Conclusion: The importance of the rate of poor results in our study should draw our attention to the conduct of free cataract surgery campaigns. The problem of cataract blindness is often compounded by poor outcomes of surgical procedures, especially in low-income settings. The use of biometrics, implants of appropriate power as well as compliance with operative indications, surgical protocols and postoperative follow-up by surgeons will improve the visual result without correction.

Large deflection of flexible tapered functionally graded beam

In this paper the semi-analytical analyses of the flexible cantilever tapered functionally graded beam under combined inclined end loading and intermediate loading are studied.In order to derive the fully non-linear equations governing the non-linear deformation,a curvilinear coordinate system is introduced.A general non-linear second order differential equation that governs the shape of a deflected beam is derived based on the geometric nonlinearities,infinitesimal local displacements and local rotation concepts with remarkable physical properties of functionally graded materials.The solutions obtained from semi-analytical methods are numerically compared with the existing elliptic integral solution for the case of a flexible uniform cantilever functionally graded beam.The effects of taper ratio,inclined end load angle and material property gradient on large deflection of the beam are evaluated.The Adomian decomposition method will be useful toward the design of tapered functionally graded compliant mechanisms driven by smart actuators.

WocEA:The visualization of functional enrichment results in word clouds

The integration, analysis and visualization of the big omics data are critical for addressing a broad spectrum of biological questions. One of the most frequently conducted procedures is enrichment analysis, which statistically tests whether individual functional an- notations of Gent Ontology （GO） or Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes （KEGG） are significantly over-or under-represented in an ＂interesting＂ gene or protein list against the reference set （Tavazoie et al., 1999）.

Successful results obtained in the treatment of adolescent forearm fractures with locked intramedullary nailing

Purpose:In the surgical treatment of paediatric forearm fractures,plate-screw and titanium elastic nails are used.During the transformation of ligamento-osseous structures from adolescence form into adult form,more stable fixation is required.The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of locked intramedullary nail fixation in adolescent forearm fractures.Methods:A retrospective examination was made on 36 adolescent patients who underwent surgery with locked intramedullary nail fixation due to a forearm fracture.The included patients were in the adolescent age group(12-17 years),did not meet conservative follow-up criteria and had unstable fractures(>10 angulation and<50%cortex continuity after plaster casting).Patients were excluded from the study if they were aged>18 years or<12 years,had Gustilo-Anderson type 2/3 open fractures,multitrauma,history of physeal injuries or could not be contacted during follow-up.Patients'age,gender,body mass index,affected side,and the pronation and supination values during follow-up were noted.Functional evaluation of the patients was performed with disabilities of the arm,shoulder and hand score and the surgical outcomes were evaluated according to the Price criteria.The time to union,infection during follow-up,re-fracture and vascular nerve damage were also examined.Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 Windows package program software.Results:The patients comprised 30 males and 6 females(ratio,5:1)with a mean age of(14.7±2.1)years(range,12-18 years).According to the Price criteria,the results of 33 patients were excellent,3 were good and there were no moderate or poor cases.The mean disabilities of the arm,shoulder and hand score was 11.2±6.1(range,4-28).The mean time to union was(8.7±2.2)weeks(range,6-14 weeks),while patients aged>15 years had prolonged time to union([11.1±1.8]weeks).There were no non-unions,re-fractures or infections.No complications were observed during implant removal.None of the patients had sensorial radial nerve injury or tendon damage.Conclusion:The locked intramedullary nailing technique,which is minimally invasive and provides biological fixation,was found to be successful and safe in the treatment of adolescent forearm fractures.
