The new curriculum,new ideas and new requirements concerning English teaching have made the rural English teaching face unprecedented challenges. There are many problems contributing to the poor effect of rural Englis...The new curriculum,new ideas and new requirements concerning English teaching have made the rural English teaching face unprecedented challenges. There are many problems contributing to the poor effect of rural English teaching,such as outdated teaching equipment,unreasonable curriculum design,insufficient teaching staff,asymmetrical teaching content,family education and students' personal problems. Based on the Chinese General Social Survey data,it is found that in terms of English reading,English speaking or English writing,the current English level of China's rural residents is lagging behind. From the average,the reading level of rural residents is better than the speaking and writing level,but the paired T-test results show that there are no significant differences between them,suggesting that under the current system of rural English teaching,the English level of rural residents is constrained to a low level. To improve the rural English teaching in the future,it is necessary to pay close attention to the following aspects: stabilizing the investment in rural education; optimizing the English teaching content; converting the philosophy of education; increasing teacher training; establishing the new linkage system.展开更多

It starts with the changes and challenges that have occurred with the amendments of the STCW Convention at Manila, and goes on with the observations and considerations of the possible principles for the revision. The paper argues that since the requirements and recommendations set in the newly amended convention are more specific, the course should be revised accordingly in correspondence with the specific requirements set and the methodology of the instruction should be adjusted with orientation toward communication competence and specific tasks and duties of the seafarers in English.展开更多
General English course at Iranian universities has always been a controversial issue since the students taking this course are rather weak in English proficiency and need more authentic instructions based on accurate ...General English course at Iranian universities has always been a controversial issue since the students taking this course are rather weak in English proficiency and need more authentic instructions based on accurate need analysis. The materials applied in this course are mainly focused on reading comprehension. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to improve General English university students' main sub-skills of reading comprehension and see the effect of the possible changes in terms of time and the fields of study of the students. To do this, 168 university students taking General English course at university of Bojnord, including humanities, engineering, physical education, and sciences, received instruction on the main sub-skills of reading comprehension after taking a pre-test sample TOELF section of reading comprehension. After 16 sessions of 90 minute instruction, they took the post-test section of TOEFL sample of reading comprehension. Mixed between within subject analysis of variance was used to assess the impact of instruction for the four groups of students from pre-test to post-test. The findings of the study indicated that the effect of instruction in terms of time, from pre-test to post-test, and the interaction of time and fields of study were significant. Besides, changes for 10 sub-skills were the same among the four fields of study.展开更多

To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher used an experimental design: an experimental group and a control group. The independent variable is using L1 while teaching English in very limited and specified areas. The dependent variable is students' achievement in general English. The statistics used is the t-test. The population of the study was all students enrolled in the foundation year 1431/1432 in the ELI (English Language Institute) at King Abdulaziz University. The sample of the study consisted of 50 students taking North Star in the sections A and B as a university requirement in the foundation year 1431/1432 in King Abdulaziz University. The results of the study were in favor of banning Arabic in the English language classroom as shown in the mean scores of the control and experimental groups in the tables. It is recommended that teachers and instructors should be trained to use teaching strategies that help them use English only in the English language classroom.展开更多

Standardized frequency based on 100000 words is adopted to ensure the comparability of PPs found in different corpo-ra. This study covers analysis of overall frequency distribution and different grammatical functions of PPs. Results show that ME prefers using more PPs and these PPs are more likely to be used as predicative and postpositive attribute than does GE.Detailed comparison and contrast about the use of PPs between GE and ME are also made, thus providing helpful information for learners or teachers of maritime English.展开更多

The embryo, cytoplasmic, and maternal heterosis for erucic acid content (EAC) and glucosinolate content (GLS) of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) were studied by using the genetic models for quantitative traits of s...The embryo, cytoplasmic, and maternal heterosis for erucic acid content (EAC) and glucosinolate content (GLS) of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) were studied by using the genetic models for quantitative traits of seeds in diploid crops. Eight parents were included in a diallel mating design in two years. It was found that the heterosis of EAC and GLS was simultaneously controlled by genetic main effects and genotype×environment (GE) interaction effects. The general heterosis of most crosses for EAC was significantly positive, while it was not for GLS. The general heterosis was more important for two quality traits of rapeseed because of the low GE interaction heterosis in both years, especially for GLS. Among different genetic systems, significant positive embryo general heterosis and the negative maternal general heterosis were found for EAC and GLS in most hybrid crosses. Some hybrids with significant negative interaction heterosis were detected for either of EAC or GLS. In general, maternal general and interaction heterosis was more important for reducing EAC and GLS of rapeseed.展开更多

Through a questionnaire, vocabulary tests, and interviews with business Englis...This thesis is based on O'Malley and Chamot's classification of L2 vocabulary learning strategies and other scholars' studies. Through a questionnaire, vocabulary tests, and interviews with business English learners, the author conducted an investigation into various kinds of vocabulary learning strategies employed by Business English majors in General English and Business English study. The subjects participating in this investigation are 95 third year Business English majors from our college. Detailed analyses of both the quantitative and qualitative data have yielded the findings: 1) The frequency of some General English learning strategies and Business English learning strategies employed by Business English majors coincides, but the difference between General English learning strategies and Business English learning strategies employed by the subjects is apparent. More English learning strategies are obviously used in General English learning than in Business English learning. 2) There is a certain correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of General English and Business English, and capable Business English learners tend to positively transfer English learning strategies employed in General English learning into Business English learning. Based on analyses and results, the thesis suggests that Business English learners should be specially trained for English learning strategies. Specialized courses offered should be designed to help students without any professional knowledge organize mental schema associated with specific vocabularies, and to help specialized vocabularies enlarge rapidly. Business English learners can positively transfer General English learning strategies into Business English learning, and thereby smoothly transform General English learning into Business English learning.展开更多
