The generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is employed to con- sider the free vibration and critical speed of moderately thick rotating laminated compos- ite conical shells with different boundary conditions developed from the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The equations of motion are obtained applying Hamilton's concept, which contain the influence of the centrifugal force, the Coriolis acceleration, and the preliminary hoop stress. In addition, the axial load is applied to the conical shell as a ratio of the global critical buckling load. The governing partial differential equations are given in the expressions of five components of displacement related to the points ly- ing on the reference surface of the shell. Afterward, the governing differential equations are converted into a group of algebraic equations by using the GDQM. The outcomes are achieved considering the effects of stacking sequences, thickness of the shell, rotating velocities, half-vertex cone angle, and boundary conditions. Furthermore, the outcomes indicate that the rate of the convergence of frequencies is swift, and the numerical tech- nique is superior stable. Three comparisons between the selected outcomes and those of other research are accomplished, and excellent agreement is achieved. 展开更多

The aim of this paper is to obtain numerical solutions of the one-dimensional,two-dimensional and coupled Burgers' equations through the generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM).The polynomial-based differential quadrature(PDQ) method is employed and the obtained system of ordinary differential equations is solved via the total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta(TVD-RK) method. The numerical solutions are satisfactorily coincident with the exact solutions. The method can compete against the methods applied in the literature. 展开更多

In this paper, the MHD peristaltic flow inside wavy walls of an asymmetric channel is investigated, where the walls of the channel are moving with peristaltic wave velocity along the channel length. During this investigation, the electrical conductivity both in Lorentz force and Joule heating is taken to be temperature dependent. Also, the long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumptions are utilized to reduce the governing partial differential equations into a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The new set of obtained equations is then numerically solved using the generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM). This is the first attempt to solve the nonlinear equations arising in the peristaltic flows using this method in combination with the Newton-Raphson technique. Moreover, in order to check the accuracy of the proposed numerical method, our results are compared with the results of built-in Mathematica command NDSolve. Taking Joule heating and viscous dissipation into account, the effects of various parameters appearing in the problem are used to discuss the fluid flow characteristics and heat transfer in the electrically conducting fluids graphically. In presence of variable electrical conductivity, velocity and temperature profiles are highly decreasing in nature when the intensity of the electrical conductivity parameter is strengthened. 展开更多

Nanobeams have promising applications in areas such as sensors, actuators, and resonators in nanoelectromechanical systems(NEMS).Considering the effects of gyration inertia, surface layer mass, surface residual stress, and surface Young's modulus, this study develops the vibration equations of the Timoshenko nanobeam. The generalized differential quadrature(GDQ)method and molecular dynamics(MD)simulation are used to study the surface effect on vibration. For a rectangular cross section, surface residual stress and surface Young's modulus are all affected by the height of the cross section rather than by the length-height ratio. If surface layer mass is considered, then the first three natural frequencies all decrease relative to their counterparts in the case in which surface layer mass is ignored. Results show that the effect of gyration inertia on resonance frequency is negligible.Longitudinal vibration does not easily occur relative to the bending and rotation vibrations of nanobeams. In addition, the results obtained by the GDQ method fit those obtained by MD simulation for beams with length-height ratios of 4-8.This study provides insights into the mechanism of the vibration of short and deep nanobeams and sheds light on the quantitative design of the elements in NEMSs. 展开更多

Natural fibers have been extensively researched as reinforcement materials in polymers on account of their environmental and economic advantages in comparison with synthetic fibers in the recent years.Bamboo fibers are renowned for their good mechanical properties, abundance, and short cycle growth. As beams are one of the fundamental structural components and are susceptible to mechanical loads in engineering applications, this paper performs a study on the free vibration and buckling responses of bamboo fiber reinforced composite(BFRC)beams on the elastic foundation.Three different functionally graded(FG)layouts and a uniform one are the considered distributions for unidirectional long bamboo fibers across the thickness. The elastic properties of the composite are determined with the law of mixture.Employing Hamilton’s principle, the governing equations of motion are obtained. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is then applied to the equations to obtain the results. The achieved outcomes exhibit that the natural frequency and buckling load values vary as the fiber volume fractions and distributions, elastic foundation stiffness values, and boundary conditions(BCs)and slenderness ratio of the beam change.Furthermore,a comparative study is conducted between the derived analysis outcomes for BFRC and homogenous polymer beams to examine the effectiveness of bamboo fibers as reinforcement materials, demonstrating the significant enhancements in both vibration and buckling responses, with the exception of natural frequencies for cantilever beams on the Pasternak foundation with the FG-◇fiber distribution.Eventually, the obtained analysis results of BFRC beams are also compared with those for carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CNTRC)beams found in the literature, indicating that the buckling loads and natural frequencies of BFRC beams are lower than those of CNTRC beams. 展开更多

We present a study on the dynamic stability of porous functionally graded(PFG)beams under hygro-thermal loading. The variations of the properties of the beams across the beam thicknesses are described by the power-law model.Unlike most studies on this topic,we consider both the bending deformation of the beams and the hygro-thermal load as size-dependent,simultaneously,by adopting the equivalent differential forms of the well-posed nonlocal strain gradient integral theory(NSGIT)which are strictly equipped with a set of constitutive boundary conditions(CBCs),and through which both the stiffness-hardening and stiffness-softening effects of the structures can be observed with the length-scale parameters changed. All the variables presented in the differential problem formulation are discretized. The numerical solution of the dynamic instability region(DIR)of various bounded beams is then developed via the generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM).After verifying the present formulation and results,we examine the effects of different parameters such as the nonlocal/gradient length-scale parameters, the static force factor, the functionally graded(FG)parameter, and the porosity parameter on the DIR.Furthermore, the influence of considering the size-dependent hygro-thermal load is also presented. 展开更多

In the presentmanuscript,a Layer-Wise(LW)generalizedmodel is proposed for the linear static analysis of doublycurved shells constrained with general boundary conditions under the influence of concentrated and surface loads. The unknown field variable is modelled employing polynomials of various orders, each of them defined within each layer of the structure. As a particular case of the LW model,an Equivalent Single Layer(ESL)formulation is derived too.Different approaches are outlined for the assessment of external forces,as well as for non-conventional constraints. The doubly-curved shell is composed by superimposed generally anisotropic laminae, each of them characterized by an arbitrary orientation. The fundamental governing equations are derived starting from an orthogonal set of principal coordinates.Furthermore, generalized blending functions account for the distortion of the physical domain. The implementation of the fundamental governing equations is performed bymeans of the Generalized Differential Quadrature(GDQ)method, whereas the numerical integrations are computed employing theGeneralized IntegralQuadrature(GIQ)method. In the post-processing phase,an effective procedure is adopted for the reconstruction of stress and strain through-the-thickness distributions based on the exact fulfillment of three-dimensional equilibrium equations.A series of systematic investigations are performed in which the static response of structures with various curvatures and lamination schemes, calculated by the present methodology, have been successfully compared to those ones obtained fromrefined finite element three-dimensional simulations.Even though the present LW approach accounts for a two-dimensional assessment of the structural problem,it is capable of well predicting the three-dimensional response of structures with different characteristics, taking into account a reduced computational cost and pretending to be a valid alternative to widespread numerical implementations. 展开更多

A nonlocal study of the vibration responses of functionally graded(FG)beams supported by a viscoelastic Winkler-Pasternak foundation is presented. The damping responses of both the Winkler and Pasternak layers of the foundation are considered in the formulation, which were not considered in most literature on this subject, and the bending deformation of the beams and the elastic and damping responses of the foundation as nonlocal by uniting the equivalently differential formulation of well-posed strain-driven(ε-D)and stress-driven(σ-D)two-phase local/nonlocal integral models with constitutive constraints are comprehensively considered, which can address both the stiffness softening and toughing effects due to scale reduction. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is used to solve the complex eigenvalue problem. After verifying the solution procedure,a series of benchmark results for the vibration frequency of different bounded FG beams supported by the foundation are obtained.Subsequently, the effects of the nonlocality of the foundation on the undamped/damping vibration frequency of the beams are examined. 展开更多

A bimorph piezoelectric beam with periodically variable cross-sections is used for the vibration energy harvesting. The effects of two geometrical parameters on the first band gap of this periodic beam are investigated by the generalized differential quadrature rule (GDQR) method. The GDQR method is also used to calculate the forced vibration response of the beam and voltage of each piezoelectric layer when the beam is subject to a sinusoidal base excitation. Results obtained from the analytical method are compared with those obtained from the finite element simulation with ANSYS, and good agreement is found. The voltage output of this periodic beam over its first band gap is calculated and compared with the voltage output of the uniform piezoelectric beam. It is concluded that this periodic beam has three advantages over the uniform piezoelectric beam, i.e., generating more voltage outputs over a wide frequency range, absorbing vibration, and being less weight. 展开更多

Presented in this paper is a precise investigation of the effect of surface stress on the vibration characteristics and instability of fluid-conveying nanoscale pipes. To this end,the nanoscale pipe is modeled as a Timoshenko nanobeam. The equations of motion of the nanoscale pipe are obtained based on Hamilton's principle and the Gurtin-Murdoch continuum elasticity incorporating the surface stress effect.Afterwards, the generalized differential quadrature method is employed to discretize the governing equations and associated boundary conditions. To what extent important parameters such as the thickness, material and surface stress modulus, residual surface stress, surface density, and boundary conditions influence the natural frequency of nanoscale pipes and the critical velocity of fluid is discussed. 展开更多

Due to the conflict between equilibrium and constitutive requirements,Eringen’s strain-driven nonlocal integral model is not applicable to nanostructures of engineering interest. As an alternative, the stress-driven model has been recently developed. In this paper, for higher-order shear deformation beams, the ill-posed issue(i.e.,excessive mandatory boundary conditions(BCs)cannot be met simultaneously)exists not only in strain-driven nonlocal models but also in stress-driven ones. The well-posedness of both the strain-and stress-driven two-phase nonlocal(TPN-Strain D and TPN-Stress D)models is pertinently evidenced by formulating the static bending of curved beams made of functionally graded(FG)materials. The two-phase nonlocal integral constitutive relation is equivalent to a differential law equipped with two restriction conditions.By using the generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM),the coupling governing equations are solved numerically. The results show that the two-phase models can predict consistent scale-effects under different supported and loading conditions. 展开更多

Based on the new modified couple stress theory and considering the flexoelectric effect of the piezoelectric layers, the Euler Bernoulli nano-beam model of composite laminated materials driven by electrostatically fixed supports at both ends is established. The nonlinear differential governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by the Hamilton principle. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM) and the Newton Raphson method are used to numerically solve the differential governing equations. The influence of flexoelectric effect on the static and the dynamic pull-in characteristics of laminated nano-beams is analyzed. The results of the numerical calculation are in a good agreement with those in the literature when the model degenerated into a nanobeam model without flexoelectric effect. The stacking sequence, length scale parameter l and piezoelectric layer applied voltage V_(p) of the composite will affect the pull-in voltage, frequency and time-domain response of the structure. Given that the flexoelectric effect will reduce the pull-in voltage and dimensionless natural frequency of the structure, the maximum dimensionless displacement at the midpoint of the beam and the period of time-domain response should be increased. 展开更多

In this paper,we study the vibrational behavior of shells in the form of truncated cones containing an ideal compressible fluid. The sloshing effect on the free surface of the fluid is neglected. The dynamic behavior of the elastic structure is investigated based on the classical shell theory, the constitutive relations of which represent a system of ordinary differential equations written for new unknowns.Small fluid vibrations are described in terms of acoustic approximation using the wave equation for hydrodynamic pressure written in spherical coordinates. Its transformation into the system of ordinary differential equations is carried out by applying the generalized differential quadrature method. The formulated boundary value problem is solved by Godunov's orthogonal sweep method.Natural frequencies of shell vibrations are calculated using the stepwise procedure and the Muller method. The accuracy and reliability of the obtained results are estimated by making a comparison with the known numerical and analytical solutions. The dependencies of the lowest frequency on the fluid level and cone angle of shells under different combinations of boundary conditions(simply supported, rigidly clamped, and cantilevered shells)have been studied comprehensively. For conical straight and inverted shells,a numerical analysis has been performed to estimate the possibility of finding configurations at which the lowest natural frequencies exceed the corresponding values of the equivalent cylindrical shell. 展开更多
