How R&D investment promotes green technology innovation in the context of digitalization?-An empirical analysis based on provincial panel data

Green technology innovation is an important driving force and source to promote my country’s high-quality development,and it is the core path to achieve sustainable development.This paper uses my country’s provincial panel data from 2016 to 2019 to study the impact mechanism of R&D investment on green technology innovation,and introduces the level of digitization,using the panel threshold model to discuss its role in the impact mechanism of R&D investment on green technology innovation.The study found that when the level of digitalization in a region is low,increasing R&D investment does not necessarily improve the ability of green technology innovation;when the level of digitalization is relatively high,R&D investment has a positive role in promoting green technology innovation.Therefore,it is necessary to improve policies to encourage enterprises to increase investment in research and development;at the same time,it is necessary to promote the coordinated development of digital foundation,digital investment,digital literacy,digital economy and digital application,and promote the deep integration of digitalization and green technology innovation. 展开更多

Promoting agricultural modernisation through technological change is an important strategy for China.China's carbon neutrality strategy is leading to systemic socio-economic changes that could exacerbate the uncertainty of agricultural development.Therefore,applying a computable general equilibrium(CGE)model,this study characterises the agricultural sector in detail,introducing endogenous technological change proxied by research and development(R&D)to assess the impact of different technological change scenarios on agricultural development under the carbon neutrality target.The results show that allocating carbon revenue for R&D inputs can mitigate the significant negative impact of achieving carbon neutrality on knowledge capital and production in agricultural sectors.Overall,using carbon revenue only for R&D input in crop sectors has the optimal effect on increasing the agricultural sectors'knowledge capital,improving crop production and profit,reducing crop external dependence and promoting the synergistic reduction of carbon and pollutant emissions.However,this scenario has the largest negative impact on macro-economics and household welfare.In contrast,allocating carbon revenue to promote technological change in broader non-energy sectors or both crops and non-energy sectors can effectively mitigate negative socio-economic impacts,but the positive impact on agricultural development is minimal.These findings provide practical insights for the rational use of carbon revenue to expand agricultural R&D investment and ensure balanced agricultural and economic development under the carbon neutrality target. 展开更多

We obtain different investment decision with different amount of firms engaging in the R&D and each firm's expected profit respectively. When the risk (the probability each firm succeed) is not random, it's socially desirable to have more firm engaging in R&D if and only if the relationship among the invest cost, the probability and the prize satisfies some condition, that is, Eπ s(n)≥Eπ s(n-1)I≤α(1-α) n-1 V . When the R&D cost I is certain, more prizes or higher probability will make more firms engage in the R&D and higher prize makes it's socially desirable to have more firm invest in R&D. 展开更多

This study investigates the possibilities offered by the development of graphene environment technology that can contribute to new and effective approaches for the transition to an ecologically benign ecosystem.To analyze the research and development progress in graphene environment technology,graphene environment technology research trends of South Korea for the years 2009e2020 are investigated by acquiring information pertaining to national research and development projects related to graphene environment technology from the National Science and Technology Information Service.Both structured and unstructured data are analyzed using diverse text-mining methods,such as keyword frequency analysis,association rule mining,and topic modelling.The results indicate that graphene research in South Korea is focused primarily on graphene use in batteries and energy-storage devices,such as solar cells,fuel cells,and secondary batteries.This study can help understand the manner by which the South Korean government has been investing in the research and development of graphene environment technology;additionally,it discusses the future applications and prospects of graphene for the next decade. 展开更多

Digital transformation has brought new vitality into enterprises'innovative development.Traditional manufacturing industries have leveraged digitalization to drive technological advancements,thereby promoting corporate green technology innovation and achieving the goal of coordinated transformation toward digital and green development.This paper employs annual data of China's A-share listed manufacturing companies from 2007 to 2020 to examine the impact of digital transformation on corporate green technology innovation and the underlying mechanism of this impact.The results indicate that digital transformation significantly enhances corporate green technology innovation,and this enhancing effect is even more significant in state-owned enterprises and high-tech enterprises.The mechanism test reveals that enhancing digital transformation can not only improve enterprises'information transparency and strengthen positive market expectations,but also encourage enterprises to increase R&D investment,ultimately enhancing the level of their green technology innovation.The empirical findings of this paper can provide valuable insights for government departments to formulate strategies that can promote green innovation in the manufacturing industry,drive high-quality development,and contribute to the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets. 展开更多

Enabling innovation and access to health technologies remains a key strategy in combating infectious diseases in low-and middle-income countries(LMICs).However,a gulf between paying markets and the endemicity of such diseases has contributed to the dearth of R&D in meeting these public health needs.While the pharmaceutical industry views emerging economies as potential new markets,most of the world’s poorest bottom billion now reside in middle-income countries-a fact that has complicated tiered access arrangements.However,product development partnerships-particularly those involving academic institutions and small firms-find commercial opportunities in pursuing even neglected diseases;and a growing pharmaceutical sector in BRICS countries offers hope for an indigenous base of innovation.Such innovation will be shaped by 1)access to building blocks of knowledge;2)strategic use of intellectual property and innovative financing to meet public health goals;3)collaborative norms of open innovation;and 4)alternative business models,some with a double bottom line.Facing such resource constraints,LMICs are poised to develop a new,more resource-effective model of innovation that holds exciting promise in meeting the needs of global health. 展开更多

Using panel data from 242 cities in China,we examine the impact of government research and development(R&D)spending on corporate technological innovation.We find that listed firms located in cities with higher government R&D expenditures are more innovative than firms in other cities.Further,the positive effect of government R&D spending depends on fiscal instruments and factor allocation.Through subsidies and tax incentives,government R&D spending enhances firm innovation by alleviating financing constraints,improving employee creativity and ensuring efficient operations.We demonstrate that subsidies are more effective than taxes in spurring corporate technological innovation.We also show that the impact of government R&D spending is stronger for state-owned and high-tech enterprises than for other enterprises.Overall,our findings suggest that government R&D spending can substantially improve corporate technological innovation through fiscal instruments. 展开更多

Weak applied generic technological capability is the root cause for the hollowing-out of core technologies of industries in China,and the fundamental cause for the poor independent innovation and absorptive capabilities of the enterprise.This paper systematically analyzes the important role of university-industry collaboration in improving the corporate generic technologies based on the structureconduct-performance(SCP)framework from the perspective of capability structure.Through theoretical derivation and analysis of the case of Kingfa,it proposes that the technological capability structure of enterprises has experienced an evolutionary process from"proprietary technology"to"proprietary technology and applied generic technology"and finally to"applied generic technology and basic generic technology"and that university-industry collaboration model correspondingly presents a change process from"auxiliary"to"complementary and auxiliary"and to"complementary",which positively affects the innovation output and the performance in the innovation process,showing a spiral escalation trajectory as a whole.Finally,it puts forward three policy optimization directions to help improve the enterprise generic technological capabilities:(1)further enhancing the corporate innovation capacity building and recognition of the position of entities,and establishing a multi-level university-industry collaboration system;(2)actively exploring new systems and mechanisms for the construction of highend cutting-edge R&D institutions jointly participated by enterprises and universities;(3)promoting the comprehensive reform of the science and technology management system from aspects of market,finance and entrepreneurial environment. 展开更多

This study investigates the nonlinear relationship between R&D expenditures,innovation,productivity,high-tech export products.Previous empirical research used linear standard structures to deal with these kinds of specifications,and it has shown that the linearity is frequently conditioned by other macroeconomic factors such as the level of development and the financial openness.Based on these arguments,our study investigates this question in econometric specification using panel smooth threshold regression methodology proposed by Gonzalez et al.in 2005.Our findings suggest that there is a threshold effect within the links between R&D expenditures,innovation,and productivity.The effect of R&D expenditures,innovation,productivity,and medium and high technology product exports is mixed.However,both positive and negative effects are found,depending on which innovation indicators are used or on which level of threshold variable is the most appropriate.The results advocate that the level of economic development can be considered as target indicators to conduct an innovation policy. 展开更多

The goal of this study is to measure the effectiveness of a career development system implemented at a research and technology organization at satisfying the context requirements of a decree issued by the Basque Country government.Through in-depth surveying of 80 R&D professionals over the five years,the authors aimed to determine whether a career development system,when it is linked to context requirements and researchers’contributions,could offer researchers feedback about their career aims and increase their job satisfaction.During the five years of the study,the researchers’capacity to meet career requirements improved by 20%,and job satisfaction,although it declined at first,increased substantially in the last two years,reaching a historic high for the employee satisfaction survey. 展开更多
