Limitations and possibilities on health assessment to women in violence situation

The aim was to know how health assessment to women in violence situation is developed. Literature review on LILACS and MEDLINE databases was conducted in April 2013 with the descriptors: “domestic violence” and “women’s health”, on a 1994-2012 timeframe. Statistics characterization and content theme analysis of the scientific production were developed. Results showed that the assessment is permeated by institutional limitation and an approach strictly clinical that makes identification and diagnosis of violence difficult, reinforcing invisibility in health care. Professional assessment is influenced by socio-cultural and the naturalization of the phenomena, which is not considered a public health issue. Technical knowledge is insufficient, making the possibility of promoting violence cycle rupture difficult. However, we envisage reception as a possibility to assess female demands. We conclude the need to include the theme in health undergraduate courses and also the urgency of this learning experience to support a multidisciplinary and intersectoral work web. Thus, rethinking assessment as a way of (re)organizing how health care is structured in order to compose an assessment web to women and guarantee reception of their demands is needed. Else, constructing competence allied to coping public policy to the problem and guaranteeing a human and full assistance will stay only on the academic field, constituting itself as a limit on protecting life of these women and their families.

Violence Against Women Under ISIS Occupation： A Critical Feminist Analysis of Religious and Political Factors that Commodify Women＇s Sexuality in the War Zone

Since the end of the 20th century the Middle East （ME） has witnessed increasing war and violence and proportionally more US intervention in the region. The growth of Islamic fundamentalism, A1-Qaeda and Intermediate System to Intermediate System （ISIS） would not happen without political and economic support, posing the crucial question of who benefits, both locally and globally, from the deconstruction and reconstruction of countries involved in war. US opposition toward the founding of an Islamic state obscures the economic and political benefits it gains from ongoing conflict in the region; the profitable conflict between the US and ISIS reinforces the hegemony of both powers and perpetuates Islamic fundamentalism and Salaflsm in the ME rather than promote non-patriarchal ideology. I argue that ISIS claims the purpose of war is creating an Islamic state in the region and question how this claim can be ontologically coherent with Qur＇an, the main resource of Islam. When ISIS occupies a region, destruction and sexual violence against women are the immediate results, and both are incoherent with a non-patriarchal reading of Qur＇an. In this article, I use a critical feminist perspective to explore how establishing an Islamic state goes against Qur＇an and is, therefore, un-Islamic in the way ISIS enforces its hegemony in ME. As a result, women＇s sexuality in particular has become a site of political economy, they are abused and/or sold in other markets for the use of ISIS soldiers. This specific religio-economic commodification of women is unique in the history of war, and the world is largely silent about it. There are brave Iraqi women, however, who use their potential and assets to support underprivileged women of the region. Their voices need amplification to gain support for their grassroots resistance to fundamentalist hegemony and political and economic disenfranchisement.

“What Is in a Name?”: “Illegal Pete’s” and the Normalization of Violence Against Mexicans in the United States

On December 2015,a new restaurant opened next to the University of Arizona campus,in Tucson.Its name was“Illegal Pete’s”and it sold Mexican food.The presence of this establishment led to an intense backlash between several University of Arizona students and the owner of the restaurant as they argued over the use of the world“illegal”.This paper reflects on the construction of“illegality”,its meaning and consequences on lived experiences.Drawing on Bakhtin’s analysis of words and his concepts of“single-voiced”and“double-voiced”discourses,I examine how the word“illegal”perpetuates and normalizes discrimination,criminalization,and racism towards Mexican-origin people and leads to feelings of anxious belonging.

Association between intimate partner violence and nutritional status of married Nepalese women

Background:Intimate partner violence(IPV)is physical,sexual,or psychological harm perpetrated by a spouse or an intimate partner.Its detrimental effects on women’s physical,mental,sexual,and reproductive health are well-documented.However,its impact on nutritional status is not well-studied,and previous studies have led to contradictory findings.This study aimed to explore the association between intimate partner violence and the nutritional status of married Nepalese women.Methods:The study used the 2016 Nepal Demographic Health Survey data,which employed a modified version of the Conflict Tactics Scale to determine women’s exposure to IPV.Anemia and low body mass index(BMI)were used as proxies of nutritional status.Multinomial regression was used to analyze the relationship between BMI and IPV;multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the association between anemia and IPV.Results:The prevalence of underweight,overweight/obesity,and anemia were respectively 13.9%,25.1%,and 38.7%.The prevalence of physical,sexual,and emotional IPVs experienced in the preceding year were respectively 9.8%,4.6%,and 7.6%.Likewise,the prevalence of lifetime physical,sexual,emotional,and controlling behavior IPVs were respectively 21.8%,7.4%,12.3%,and 32.1%.The low intensity of emotional IPV(AOR 1.62;CI:1.02-2.56)and moderate intensity of physical IPV(AOR 3.70;CI:1.64-8.35)experienced in the preceding year,and low intensity of lifetime emotional IPV(AOR 1.69;CI:1.11-2.58)were associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity.Moderate intensity of sexual IPV(AOR 2.59;CI:1.099-6.108)experienced in the preceding year was associated with an increased risk of underweight BMI.The low intensity of lifetime controlling behavior(AOR1.25;CI:1.03-1.53)was associated with an increased risk of anemia.Conclusions:Emotional and Physical IPVs are significantly associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity.Sexual IPV is significantly associated with an increased risk of underweight BMI,and controlling behavior is significantly associated with an increased risk of anemia.Seeking help could offset the detrimental effects of IPV;therefore,IPV screening should be a part of regular healthcare assessment for married women,and appropriate rehabilitation should be offered to IPV survivors.

This research is to describe Chinese belief. God＇s worship （baishen 拜神） is one form of Chinese belief. God＇s worship tradition can be seen in god＇s birthday festival. By using Xuan Tian Shangdi＇s （Hian Thian Siang Tee 玄天上帝） birthday Festival in Hok Lay Kiong Temple, Bekasi West Java and Xuan Tian Shangdi Temple in Welahan, Jepara Central Java as unit analysis. The author will describe the variations in Chinese Indonesian tradition. The festival is on the 3rd day of the third month of Chinese lunar year. Xuan Tian Shangdi＇s birthday festival shows the similarities and differences in variations of tradition. The festival of god＇s birthday is also a temple festival involving various groups which are aimed to integrate. This research is qualitative research conducted by field research. Data collection methods are interview, observations, and participant observations to gain an understanding of Chinese belief.

Reordered Love, Reordered Lives： Rethinking Vice and Virtue

In this paper and presupposing a Christian Weltanschauung or biblical worldview, I will argue that vices are disordered loves and virtues are reordered loves. The Christian gospel makes the ~ansition from the former to the latter state possible. The seven deadly sins--pride, envy, anger, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust--are disordered loves; the seven cardinal virtues--faith, hope, love, courage, justice, temperance, and prudence--are reordered loves. Since love is central in human experience---rooted in the heart--it is also central in moral formation and deformation. Love （or the lack thereof） is the key to understanding the nature and action of both human vice and virtue.

The profound experiences attributed to the “sensed presence” and their cultural anthropomorphisms such as deities and gods are persistent reports in human populations that are frequently associated with permanent changes in behavior, reduced depression and alleviation of pain. The majority of traditional clinical observations and modern imaging techniques have emphasized the central role of right temporal lobe structures and their directly related networks. The experimental simulation of sensed presences which can result in attributions to spiritual, deity-based or mystical sources within the clinical laboratory by the application of physiologically-patterned magnetic fields across the temporal lobes through our God Helmet requires the same precision of technology that is essential for synthesizing molecular treatments for modifying anomalous behavior, depression and pain. Despite the clinical utility of these simulated conditions within Neuroscience and Medicine, misinformation concerning the bases and efficacy of this new technology persist. Here we present detailed technical clarifications and rebuttals to refute these misconceptions. A Hegelian approach to this delay of development and impedance provides a context through which the ultimate synthesis and application of this technology may be accommodated in the near future.

Patterns of Violence Experienced by Women Victims of Domestic Violence in Bengaluru City:A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction:Domestic violence has negative effects on the physical health and mental health of women.Domestic violence takes various forms:physical,psychological,sexual,and emotional abuse.Many organizations are working with women and their families to prevent and reduce instances of violence.The current study aimed to understand the various patterns of violence among women victims of domestic violence.Materials and Methods:The sample of 30 women approaching the women’s helpline,in Bengaluru was considered for the study using a cross-sectional design.The interview schedule for assessing patterns of violence was used.Descriptive statistics were used for analyzing the data.Results:The majority of the respondents(50%)were in the age group of 20-29 years,more than half(53.3%)were homemaker and the majority(70%)stayed in nuclear family structures.More than one-fourth reported severe physical violence such as pushing,slapping,and punching.Most of the respondents reported husbands to be perpetrators of violence,60%reported violence as a habit,and the majority reported dowry harassment as the reason for violence.Conclusion:Mental health professionals need to work on the root cause of habitual violence and dowry harassment perpetrated by the spouse and empower the victims.
