The supernatural in his stories, like Poe, mirrors human psychology. Generally there are three groups of the supernatural in his short story: the Supernatural Gothic, the psychic story, and the story of ironic terror. This article, through text reading, tries to prove that these three groups, from different angles, reflect Bierce’s belief that when confronting with the ultimate existential plights, a person reveals the nature of his character through his psychological words.展开更多

Carter takes a very problematic place about pornography literature, which has been the long-standing debate among critics. As a result, some of her books are prohibited by the corresponding authority in China. However, Carter is one of the innovative feminist writers in that she quests for some extraordinary emancipatory erotics, beyond subjugation, beyond prejudice. Women under her writings are mostly controlled or manipulated by a patriarchal society in a phallocentric culture. Pornography, fairy tales and feminism"within and against the conventions of these genres"are all mixed together in the story of the Bloody Chamber. As a whole, The Bloody Chamber can also be treated as a collection of short stories in terms of a bigger narrative that deals with issues of feminism and metamorphosis rather than a set of individual and independent tales. Although each particular narrative deals with a different set of various characters, the oppressed female seeking liberation is the common theme and concept that is explored and expanded throughout the Bloody Chamber.展开更多

Having spent most of the nineties as a buzz-word in literature and culture, its haunting presence appears to have faded somewhat. With the end of TV serials such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and the current lack of interest in the so-called Gothic images that used to inundate media and popular culture, the question arises yet again as to what significance the Gothic bears for contemporary literature?Importantly, what remains to be taken into account by such critics is the presence of fundamental Gothic elements in literary postmodernist texts. By this,I refer to works definable under the paradigm of postmodernism; experimental, radical and often metalfictional literature which problematises the relationship between reality and fiction, reader and text. The purpose of this article is to fill this gap in literary criticism by proposing a theoretical approach to postmodernist texts that are definitively Gothic.展开更多

What impresses readers most is the frequent usage of Gothic features, like murders, ghost, witches, and so on. The paper will make a tentative study on Gothic settings, Gothic characters, and Gothic plots in Macbeth. The age of confusing right and wrong and horrible environmental settings will be expounded; then, the detailed analysis of Gothic characters like Macbeth, the trio of Witches and Lady Macbeth will be elaborated on; the plots of noumenal horror and mental terror will be elucidated finally. It is helpful for deeply understanding the drama's theme and interpreting the work from a new perspective, which plays a positive role in the research and development of Gothic literature and possesses certain significance for literary reference.展开更多

As the author chooses this title for her paper, she clearly keep in mind John Barth's (1930-) essay. The choice of "punning" Barth's title is made so as to situate ourselves in the wake of postmodernist studies to try and analyze King's deconstruction and reconstruction of common ideas, myths, and the Gothic genre, applying them to the contemporary era. The choice of this angle of study is accounted by the fact that the aim is to prove that King has not literarily exhausted himself in spite of his 37 years of writing and is in a constant quest for a renewal of the Gothic genre. The notion of remolding is one of the red threads allowing to weave the intricate cloth of postmodernism. The author will here humbly try to unveil the essential elements perceived in King's narratives which allow to qualify him as "a postmodern writer".展开更多
