This paper introduces a new version of the open-source educational software, LESM (Linear Elements Structure Model), developed in MATLAB for structural analysis of one-dimensional models such as frames, trusses, and g...This paper introduces a new version of the open-source educational software, LESM (Linear Elements Structure Model), developed in MATLAB for structural analysis of one-dimensional models such as frames, trusses, and grillages. The updated program includes dynamic analysis, which incorporates inertial and damping effects, time-dependent load conditions, and a transient solver with multiple time integration schemes. The software assumes small displacements and linear-elastic material behavior. The paper briefly explains the theoretical basis for these developments and the reorganization of the source code using Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). The updated Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows interactive use of dynamic analysis features and displays new results such as animations, envelope diagrams of internal forces, phase portraits, and the response of degrees-of-freedom in time and frequency domain. The new version was used in a structural dynamics course, and new assignments were elaborated to improve students’ understanding of the subject.展开更多
The development of economy and industrialization further accelerates the pace of development of graphic design education.The educational system actively adopted two ways of“going out”and“inviting in”to communicate...The development of economy and industrialization further accelerates the pace of development of graphic design education.The educational system actively adopted two ways of“going out”and“inviting in”to communicate with the western world in graphic design(Zhang,2009).Chinese design began to re-examine its balance between globalization and localization after rapid absorption and international experience digestion.As for the negative influence,it led to the risk of developing short-sightedness in design education.Faced with unprecedented challenges,the graphic design industry was continually expanding its functions.The development of Chinese design cannot entirely rely on its own.There was no doubt that graphic design was indeed facing significant obstacles.The suggestions from the American Institute of Graphic Arts(AIGA)are set very high to achieve;the objectives will be excellent if academia can follow.A study aims to understand the overall curriculum and course design and how best to modify the general curriculum and course design to allow for industry practices changes and keep a close eye on the Chinese market's changing needs for design should be carried out.展开更多

A pioneering self-optimizing teaching method in student-centric seminars was introduced in this paper, in which each student will establish preferred engineering drawing process directed by educators and necessary pri...A pioneering self-optimizing teaching method in student-centric seminars was introduced in this paper, in which each student will establish preferred engineering drawing process directed by educators and necessary principles. We presented the working-memory centered mechanism in mental aspect to explain the phenomena. The theoretical mechanism is based on the typical translation between orthographic projection image and perspective image. The first is bonding object into a whole solid. The second is splicing the selected surfaces of objects and tailored them together. Two study groups were determined: an experimental group, who were directed to combine the object-based and surface-based construction methods in the presentations, and a control group, who learned through regular presentations made by an experienced teacher during the same period. The results showed that a significant enhancement in average scores has been achieved in the test among the experimental group in comparison with the control group. The variance of the scores is obviously reduced through the self-optimizing learning strategy, indicating a significant advantage on filling up the ability gaps among students. In fact, the results also indicated that the educator did keep the lesson in high quality. But it is worthy of more attention that the difference of mental manipulation habits between some students and educator may lead to a polarization in score distribution. So the seminar is a promising method to help the students to combine the object-based and surface-based construction methods.展开更多

Is it possible to create the motivation in science learning for students using ICT or graphic cal- culator? How can we organize the engineer training on such professional activity in class- room? In this paper we try to answer the ques- tions using methodology of visual modelling and technology of resource lessons in high en- gineering school.展开更多
