This paper presents, however, low-frequency GPR survey to investigate fault-related depositional systems at greater depths. The Quinta-Cassino area in the Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain (RGSCP, Brazil) shows a wide strandplain that is made off by very long, continuous, and linear geomorphic features (beach ridges). This strandplain extends for ~70 km southward. The beach ridges show low-angle truncations against the Quinta escarpment, and also truncations in the strandplain. The traditional approach points that RGSCP was developed by juxtaposition of four lagoons/barrier systems as consequence of sea level changes;previous model assumes that no deformational episode occurred in RGSCP. The geophysical and geological surveys carried out in this area showed the existence of listric fault controlling the beach ridges in the escarpments and hanging-wall blocks. The radargrams could distinguish Pleistocene basement unit anticlockwise rotation, thickening of beach ridges radarfacies close to listric normal faults, and horst structures. These deformational features indicate that the extensional zone of a large-scale gravity-driven structure controlled the mechanical subsidence, the Holocene sedimentation and its stratigraphic and geomorphic features in the Quinta-Cassino area to build up an asymmetric delta. The results point to a new approach in dealing with RGSCP Holocene evolution.展开更多

There are two points of view in the argument about formation depth of ultrahigh pressure metamorphism: (1) the depth can be calculated by hydrostatic equation; (2) the high pressure was composed of gravity, tectonic and other forces instead of merely gravity force. Some misunderstandings of mechanical conceptions presented in the paper showing the hydrostatic viewpoints should be open to question. The main conceptions are: (1) the confining pressure was only formed by gravity, and the differential stress was only formed by tectonic force; (2) the differential stress is not big enough to lead to form ultrahigh pressure metamorphism; (3) once tectonic overpressure goes beyond the limited strength of rocks the tectonic force would disappear and the rocks would be broken or rheomorphied at the same time. A short discussion in basic mechanics is made in this paper for a perfect process for discussing the argument.展开更多

In this study, ground-based and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) gravity data from 2009 to 2013 are used to calculate the gravity change rate(GCR) using the polynomial fitting method. In general, the study area was divided into the Shanxi rift, Jing-Jin-Ji(Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province), and Bohai Bay Basin(BBB) regions. Results of the distribution of the GCR determined from ground-based gravimetry show that the GCR appears to be "negativepositive-negative" from west to east, which indicates that different geophysical mechanisms are involved in the tectonic activities of these regions. However, GRACE solutions are conducted over a larger spatial scale and are able to show a difference between southern and northern areas and a mass redistribution of land water storage.展开更多

In this study, the latest GOCE gravity field model data(from Oct. 2009 to Jul. 2010) are used to compute the gravity gradient of China's Mainland according to a rigorous recursion formula(in all the six directions). The results show that the numerical values of the gravity gradients are larger in the T rr direction than those in the other directions. They reflect the terrain characteristics in detail and correlate with the regional tectonics; however, in the T ql and T r l directions, the numerical values are relatively smaller and the gravity gradients in the T r l direction do not reflect the terrain characteristics in detail.展开更多

The result revealed that before the Akto earthquake, a high positive gravity variation was observed in the Pamir tectonic knots region (within a maximum magnitude of approximately +80 microgal), which was consistent with the existing knowledge of gravity abnormality and the locations of strong earthquakes. In view of the recent strong seismic activities in the Pamir tectonic knots region, as well as the strong upward crust movement and compressive strain, it is believed that gravity change in the Pamir tectonic knots region reflects the recent strong seismic activities and crust movement.展开更多

The results reveal that the subsurface structures strikes are different compared with those in the research region. In other words, the geophysical advantageous directions from the gravity and magnetic anomalies are not the same as those caused by the surface structures. The local horizontal gradient results from the gravity and magnetic anomalies show that the majority of earthquakes occur along an intense fault zone, which is a zone of abrupt gravity and negative magnetic change, where the shapes match very well. From the distribution of earthquakes in this area, we find that it has experienced more than 11 earthquake events with magnitude larger than Ms7.0. In addition, water development sites such as Jinshajiang, Lancangjiang, and the Red River and Pearl River watersheds have been hit ten times by earthquakes of this magnitude. It is observed that strong earthquakes occur frequently in the Holocene active fault zone.展开更多
