Purpose:This paper attempts to review and conceptualize how different scholars approach research on teacher identity through the lens of three human interests defined by Jurgen Habermas.Design/Approach/Methods:This literature review,guided by Habermas's three human interests,illustrates the characteristics of three different approaches to the inquiry into teacher identity.Findings:This paper summarizes three approaches to researching teacher identity and their characteristics,namely the technical approach,the practical approach,and the critical approach.The implications for future research and teacher development are also discussed.Originality/Value:By incorporating Habermas's three human interests into teacher identity inquiries,this article offers a theoretical narrative review of the approaches to investigating teacher identity.Strengths and weaknesses of each approach as well as the possibility of a combined application of different approaches provide an original discussion of teacher identity research. 展开更多

The Clash of Solidarities in the European Union Rethinking Jiirgen Habermas' Conception of Solidarity in the Transnational Context

The term solidarity is used extensively in the current political debate in Europe. Many times, the European Union is accused of a "lack of solidarity". But is this really the case? From the perspective of political... The term solidarity is used extensively in the current political debate in Europe. Many times, the European Union is accused of a "lack of solidarity". But is this really the case? From the perspective of political theory, Jurgen Habermas convincingly argues that solidarity beyond the nation state is indeed possible - even without a European demos. Since solidarity was artificially constructed within the nation state, it could very well expand into a form of transnational solidarity. However, the European Union is a complex sui generis institution, characterized by its multi-level governance. This paper therefore complements Habermas' concep- tion by Andrea Sangiovanni's reciprocity-based internationalism which differenti- ates more detailed between national, member state and transnational solidarity. Moreover, the paper argues that the democratic deficiencies and the economic liberalization in the European Union led to a fourth form of solidarity: a revived solidarity with the nation state. The current situation within the European Union is thus not the result of a lack of solidarity. On the contrary, there is plenty of solidarity around. However, the parallel existence of these different forms of solidarity could not persist without conflicts under the given discourse where solidarity is framed as a zero-sum game. Hence, the European Union does not suffer from a lack of solidarity but rather from a clash of multiple solidarities. 展开更多

It addresses the national component of identity formations in order to transform them in light of universal human rights principles. In this article, I seek to strengthen this theory left underdeveloped by Habermas. To do so, I use the idea of moral development which Habermas borrowed from Kohlberg. I argue that Constitutional Patriotism is the missing link in Habermas's reading of Kohlberg. I complement Kohlberg's reading of moral consciousness with the psychoanalytic idea of individuation. Communication, language, and autonomy all fall into their places in this interdisciplinary puzzle of Constitutional Patriotism spanning over the cultural terrain. This article takes part of the broader project of Constitutional Patriotism here only focusing on the notion of the selfhood. 展开更多

Nowadays, public participation is one of the most important factors to improve the feasibility, legitimacy and quality of urban plans. In Iran, due to lack of comprehensive understanding about the participation notion and its necessary socio-economic and political infrastructures, participatory decision-making has faced with some serious challenges in both processes of preparing and implementing. The present paper focuses on providing practical strategies for preparing collaborative urban plans in Iran's conditions. Also it seeks to answer this question: What is the role of planners to prepare a real collaborative plan? It is assumed that a conceptual model for collaborative planning can be fitted with Iran's conditions by means of integrating the fundamental philosophic ideas of participatory planning such as theories of Paul Michel Foucault and Jürgen Habermas, given the fact that the present situation of collaborative planning in Iran needs a supportive theory which is compatible with power structures of Iranian urban planning system. In this regard, the Habermas' theory of “communicative action” and the Foucault's theory of “power structures” are reviewed by a comparative analysis methodology to present an integrated conceptual model for collaborative planning in Iran's condition. At the end, the CDS (City Development Strategy)---making process of Anzali City of Iran is analysed to examine this claim in the practice. The results yield that enabling urban planners to act as communication facilitators during planning can direct the collaborative planning in Iran from theory to a real practice by means of integrating the positive aspects of communication and power. 展开更多

Diversity or pluralism in values has been widely recognized as a major feature of our times both intemationally and domestically, and China is no exception, where this phenomenon is regarded as a major reason for the country's efforts to pursue the goal of a “harmonious society” at home and the goal of a “harmonious world” abroad. Against this background, many people show great interest in the idea of “overlapping consensus” proposed by John gawls. On the basis of a careful reading of different interpretations of this idea, or the “overlapping consensus” on the idea of“ overlapping consensus,” we can say that there are three levels of “overlapping consensus. ”At the first level, people with different positions treat each other with the same reasonable attitude. At the second level, people holding different values support the same norms on the basis of their respective values or by taking each other's perspectives into the moral discourse. At the third level, people who currently hold different “moral sources”of the shared norms are nonetheless ready to engage in a common leaming process that aims for a “fusion of horizons"”in the future. Overlapping consensuses at all these levels should not only be discussed in political philosophy, or discovered in political culture, but also constructed in political practice. This means that we should try our best to provide actual conditions for overlapping consensuses in social and institutional reality, and at the same time avoid reducing the validity of any type of overlapping consensus to its facticity. 展开更多

Building information modeling (BIM) is expected to have a large impact on users in the lifeworlds in a construction supply chain. The impact ofBIM on users in their lifeworlds is explored using the concepts of Heidegger, Habermas, and Ihde from the perspective of technical mediation. This impact is explored by a case study. BIM mediates and shapes the relationship between users and their lifeworlds and can be characterized as either a hermeneutic or an alterity relationship. BIM conflicts with existing work practices in a ready-to-hand work environment. For users that cannot work with BIM, the work environment remains present-at-hand. The many heterogeneous BIM applications and systems used by the various parties involved result in interoperability problems that are a major barrier to enframing the supply chain by BIM. Although invitation and inhibition of certain actions by BIM may stimulate the rationalization of the lifeworlds, the lack of intrinsic motivation and mutual background knowledge inhibits an alignment of BIM and working practices. 展开更多
