This study aimed to reveal the sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae from clinical isolate and perform antibacterial assay on the organism using plants leaf extracts of Ocimum gratissimum, Sida acuta, Newbouldia laevia and Mimosa pudica. Gram staining and various biochemical test were used for the identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The plants leaves were aseptically washed, dried and ground into fine powder and diluted in varying concentration and agar well diffusion method was used to test for the antimicrobial properties of this plants on Streptococcus pneumoniae at various concentrations as follows 0.1 g/ml, 0.4 g/ml, 0.6 g/ml and 1 g/ml. The plants extract of Ocimum gratissimum showed a greater antibacterial effects on Streptococcus pneumoniae in high concentration more than other plant extracts while Sida acuta and Newbouldia laevia plant extract showed weak antibacterial properties to the organism. This proves that Ocimum gratissimum and Mimosa pudica leaves have good and strong antibacterial properties against Streptococcus pneumoniae than Sida acuta and Newbouldia laevia and can be used as antibacterial agent at adequate concentrations.展开更多

文摘Diabetes, one of the world's top ten diseases,is known for its high mortality and complication rates and low cure rate.Prediabetes precedes the onset of diabetes, during which effective treatment can reduce diabetes risk.Prediabetes risk factors include high-calorie and high-fat diets, sedentary lifestyles, and stress.Consequences may include considerable damage to vital organs, including the retina, liver, and kidneys.Interventions for treating prediabetes include a healthy lifestyle diet and pharmacological treatments. However, while these options are effective in the short term, they may fail due to the difficulty of long-term implementation.Medications may also be used to treat prediabetes. This review examines prediabetic treatments, particularly metformin,glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, vitamin D,and herbal medicines.Given the remarkable impact of prediabetes on the progression of diabetes mellitus,it is crucial to intervene promptly and effectively to regulate prediabetes. However, the current body of research on prediabetes is limited, and there is considerable confusion surrounding clinically relevant medications. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the pathogenesis of prediabetes mellitus and its associated therapeutic drugs. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the clinical utilization of medications and achieve efficient and timely control of diabetes mellitus.

文摘Recent trends suggest that Chinese herbal medicine formulas(CHM formulas)are promising treatments for complex diseases. To characterize the precise syndromes, precise diseases and precise targets of the precise targets between complex diseases and CHM formulas,we developed an artificial intelligence-based quantitative predictive algorithm(DeepTCM).DeepTCM has gone through multilevel model calibration and validation against a comprehensive set of herb and disease data so that it accurately captures the complex cellular signaling, molecular and theoretical levels of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).As an example, our model simulated the optimal CHM formulas for the treatment of coronary heart disease(CHD)with depression, and through model sensitivity analysis,we calculated the balanced scoring of the formulas.Furthermore,we constructed a biological knowledge graph representing interactions by associating herb-target and gene-disease interactions. Finally,we experimentally confirmed the therapeutic effect and pharmacological mechanism of a novel model-predicted intervention in humans and mice. This novel multiscale model opened up a new avenue to combine“disease syndrome”and“macro micro”system modeling to facilitate translational research in CHM formulas.

文摘In traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),based on various pathogenic symptoms and the‘golden chamber’medical text,Huangdi Neijing, diabetes mellitus falls under the category‘collateral disease’.TCM,with its wealth of experience, has been treating diabetes for over two millennia.Different antidiabetic Chinese herbal medicines re-duce blood sugar, with their effective ingredients exerting unique advantages. As well as a glucose lowering effect,TCM also regulates bodily functions to prevent diabetes associated complications, with reduced side effects compared to western synthetic drugs.Chinese herbal medicine is usually composed of polysaccharides,saponins,al-kaloids,flavonoids,and terpenoids. These active ingredients reduce blood sugar via various mechanism of actions that include boosting endogenous insulin secretion, enhancing insulin sensitivity and adjusting key enzyme activity and scavenging free radicals. These actions regulate glycolipid metabolism in the body, eventually achiev-ing the goal of normalizing blood glucose.Using different animal models,a number of molecular markers are available for the detection of diabetes induction and the molecular pathology of the disease is becoming clearer.Nonetheless, there is a dearth of scientific data about the pharmacology,dose-effect relationship, and structure-activity relationship of TCM and its constituents.Further research into the efficacy, toxicity and mode of action of TCM,using different metabolic and molecular markers,is key to developing novel TCM antidiabetic formulations.

文摘In this issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology,Huang et al reported that Calculus bovis(CB),a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, impedes the growth of liver cancers in vivo.Through further in vitro studies, they showed that CB suppressed the M2 polarization of tumor-associated macrophages by suppressing the Wnt signaling pathway, which consequently inhibited the growth of liver cancer.Although the effects of traditional Chinese herbal medicine are often not scientifically proven,Huang et al successfully identified the molecular mechanism involved in the anticancer effect of CB,and it is anticipated that the molecular mechanisms involved in the effects of other traditional Chinese herbal medicines will be scientifically elucidated,as demonstrated in this article.

文摘Background:Jianqu has been used to alleviate symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia, but its specific anti-functional dyspepsia effect is still unclear. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the impact of Jianqu on functional dyspepsia in mice. Methods:The phytochemical profile of Jianqu was analyzed by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS.Subsequently,Kunming mice were fed a high-calorie or high-protein diet(HCHP)for 7 days, and then orally treated with vehicle or Jianqu(1.62 g/kg body weight(b.w.)and 3.25 g/kg b.w.)for 10 days.A carbon powder solution was used to detect the gastric emptying and intestinal transit rate. The pathological changes in stomach and duodenum were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin staining. The occludin,claudin-1,ZO-1 and CD45 expression was measured by immunocytochemical staining.Importantly, the serum gastrointestinal hormones were detected by ELISA.In addition, the gut microbiota composition was determined using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The cecal short chain fatty acids were assessed by gas chromatography. Results:In general,17 phytochemical compounds were identified from Jianqu, which significantly improved the gastric emptying rate and intestinal transit rate(p<0.01),increased the body weight and food intake(p<0.0001)in HCHP mice as well.Though HCHP did not cause significant pathological lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, increased the expression of CD45 in the duodenum(p<0.05)was observed.Notably,Jianqu attenuated this abnormal expression of CD45(p<0.05).The levels of serum gastrointestinal hormones were significantly normalized by Jianqu intervention(p<0.05).Moreover,Jianqu increased the relative abundance of Roseburia as well as short chain fatty acids levels in cecum(p<0.05).Conclusion:The present results showed that Jianqu alleviated dyspeptic symptoms in HCHP mice possibly through reducing the duodenal leukocyte infiltration, and regulating the expression of gastrointestinal hormones. These effects may be partly related to the increasing cecal short chain fatty acids levels probably via gut microbial modulation.

文摘African swine fever(ASF)is a highly contagious disease of domestic and wild pigs caused by African swine fever virus(ASFV).The mortality rate associated with ASF is remarkably high, almost approaching 100%.Since the introduction of ASF into China in 2018,its rapid spread has caused marked economic losses in the country’s swine industry. To date, there are no safe and efective commercial vaccines or antiviral drugs against ASF;thus, there is an urgent need to develop novel prevention and control strategies.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which comprises various herbs that are abundant in various potential functional components, holds great promise for the prevention and control of ASF.Here,we provide a comprehensive review of the advancements in TCM and the efects of its compound formulas against ASF,including the antiviral abilities, immunoregulatory activities, and practical application of these formulas for the prevention and control of ASF.We specifcally examined the potential and constraints of natural product-derived extracts and TCM formulas in combating ASFV.This review aims to ofer insights and ideas for the holistic management and containment of ASF.
文摘Antibiotic-resistant genes have become a threat to synthetic or conventional medications and because of this much work has been done on using plants and plants part to treat disease caused by bacteria, Herbal medicine has served as effective treatment against various diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria and multi drug-resistant strains of bacteria which made it advantageous over synthetic medications. This proves that Ocimum gratissimum and Mimosa pudica leaves have good and strong antibacterial properties against Streptococcus pneumoniae than Sida acuta and Newbouldia laevia and can be used as antibacterial agent at adequate concentrations.

文摘Recent research has highlighted the potential of Codonopsis Radix to modulate the immune system, making it a promising candidate for treating chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, tumors, and aging. However, because of the complex immune activities of its various components,a comprehensive understanding of Codonopsis Radix immune-regulating properties is still lacking. This knowledge gap hinders its widespread utilization in clinical practice. Therefore, this review aimed to assess the impact of Codonopsis Radix on the immune system and elucidate its underlying mechanisms.Additionally,we compared the immunomodulatory effects of different active ingredients derived from Codonopsis Radix to provide a theoretical basis for future investigations on immunomodulation.
文摘Vascular calcification is a crucial risk factor that affects the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease patients.Modern medicine relies on calcium-phosphorus binding agents, calcium mimetics, active vitamin D,and hemodialysis to prevent and treat vascular calcification, however, their efficacy is unsatisfactory and adverse reactions often occur.Medical plant therapy can act as an integrative regulator in patients with chronic kidney disease-associated vascular calcification, which can significantly improve patients’symptoms, but its specific mechanism has not been fully elucidated yet.In this paper,we reviewed the domestic and international theoretical studies on the pathogenesis mechanism of chronic kidney disease-associated vascular calcification in recent years, summarized eight active ingredients of medicinal plants as well as four compound formulas for improving chronic kidney disease-associated vascular calcification, and explored the mechanism of action of herbal medicine, which will provide a new strategy for promoting the prevention and treatment of vascular calcification.
