Interference management is one of the most important issues in the device-to-device(D2D)-enabled heterogeneous cellular networks(HetCNets)due to the coexistence of massive cellular and D2D devices in which D2D devices reuse the cellular spectrum. To alleviate the interference,an efficient interference management way is to set exclusion zones around the cellular receivers. In this paper,we adopt a stochastic geometry approach to analyze the outage probabilities of cellular and D2D users in the D2D-enabled HetCNets. The main difficulties contain three aspects:1)how to model the location randomness of base stations, cellular and D2D users in practical networks;2)how to capture the randomness and interrelation of cellular and D2D transmissions due to the existence of random exclusion zones;3)how to characterize the different types of interference and their impacts on the outage probabilities of cellular and D2D users. We then run extensive Monte-Carlo simulations which manifest that our theoretical model is very accurate. 展开更多

This study proposes a tractable approach to analyze the physical-layer security in the downlink of a multi-tier heterogeneous cellular network. This method is based on stochastic geometry, has low computational complexity, and uses the two-dimensional Poisson point process to model the locations of K-tier base stations and receivers, including those of legitimate users and eavesdroppers. Then, the achievable secrecy rates for an arbitrary user are determined and the upper and lower bounds of secrecy coverage probability derived on the condition that cross-tier interference is the main contributor to aggregate interference. Finally, our analysis results reveal the innate connections between information-theoretic security and the spatial densities of legitimate and malicious nodes. 展开更多

A K-tier uplink heterogeneous cellular network is modelled and analysed by accounting for both truncated channel inversion power control and biased user association. Each user has a maximum transmit power constraint and transmits data when it has sufficient transmit power to perform channel inversion. With biased user association, each user is associated with a base station(BS) that provides the maximum received power weighted by a bias factor, but not their nearest BS. Stochastic geometry is used to evaluate the performances of the proposed system model in terms of the outage probability and ergodic rate for each tier as functions of the biased and power control parameters. Simulations validate our analytical derivations. Numerical results show that there exists a trade-off introduced by the power cut-off threshold and the maximum user transmit power constraint. When the maximum user transmit power becomes a binding constraint, the overall performance is independent of BS densities. In addition, we have shown that it is beneficial for the outage and rate performances by optimizing different network parameters such as the power cut-off threshold as well as the biased factors. 展开更多

This study investigates physical layer security in downlink multipleinput multiple-output(MIMO) multi-hop heterogeneous cellular networks(MHCNs),in which communication between mobile users and base stations(BSs) is established by a single or multiple hops,to address the problem of insufficient security performance of MIMO heterogeneous cellular networks.First,two-dimensional homogeneous Poisson point processes(HPPPs) are utilized to model the locations of K-tier BSs in MIMO MHCNs and receivers, including those of legitimate users and eavesdroppers.Second, based on the channel gain distribution and the statistics property of HPPP,the achievable ergodic rates of the main and eavesdropper channels in direct and ad hoc links are derived, respectively.Third, the secrecy coverage probability and the achievable ergodic secrecy throughput of downlink MIMO MHCNs are explored, and their expressions are derived.Lastly, the correctness of the theoretical derivation is verified through Monte Carlo simulations. 展开更多

Motivated by the objective of pursuing revenue, improvement in coverage and reduction in energy cost for wireless communication networks have been of great significance for mobile operators. Therefore, heterogeneous cellular networks(HCNs) and Coordinated Multipoint(Co MP) transmission are considered as promising solutions to enhance the performances of wireless communication systems. This paper analyzed the K-tier HCNs with a dynamic downlink Co MP scheme, in which the flexible clusters of cooperative stations are determined by a connecting threshold θ. Using stochastic geometry, the coverage probability(CP) and energy efficiency(EE) of a K-tier HCN operating under this scheme are derived, based on which the trade-off between CP and EE is discovered and discussed. Simulation results show the validity of our derivations. The proposed schememay significantly reduce energy consumption sacrificing a small amount of CP, and outperforms the fixed scheme as well. The CP-EE trade-off are also revealed, whichsuggests suitable trade-off points between CP and EE that will deliver the maximum economic profitability. Tendencies discovered in this paper may provide the operators with opportunities for further optimization in pursuit of economic profitability. 展开更多

Video streaming, especially hypertext transfer protocol based(HTTP) adaptive streaming(HAS) of video, has been expected to be a dominant application over mobile networks in the near future, which brings huge challenge for the mobile networks.Although some works have been done for video streaming delivery in heterogeneous cellular networks, most of them focus on the video streaming scheduling or the caching strategy design. The problem of joint user association and rate allocation to maximize the system utility while satisfying the requirement of the quality of experience of users is largely ignored. In this paper, the problem of joint user association and rate allocation for HTTP adaptive streaming in heterogeneous cellular networks is studied,we model the optimization problem as a mixed integer programming problem. And to reduce the computational complexity,an optimal rate allocation using the Lagrangian dual method under the assumption of knowing user association for BSs is first solved. Then we use the many-to-one matching model to analyze the user association problem, and the joint user association and rate allocation based on the distributed greedy matching algorithm is proposed. Finally, extensive simulation results are illustrated to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme. 展开更多

The Poisson point process(PPP) has been widely used in wireless network modeling and performance analysis due to the independence between its nodes. Therefore, it may not be a suitable model for many of the exclusive networks between the nodes. This paper analyzes the energy efficiency(EE) and optimizes the two-tier heterogeneous cellular networks(Het Nets). Considering the mutual exclusion between macro base stations(MBSs) distribution, the deployment of MBSs is modeled by the Matérn hard-core point process(MHCPP), and the deployment of pico base stations(PBSs) is modeled by the PPP. We adopt a simple approximation method to study the signal to interference ratio(SIR) distribution in two-tier MHCPP-PPP networks and then derive the coverage probabilities, the average data rates and the energy efficiency of Het Nets. Finally, an optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the EE of Het Nets by controlling the transmit power of PBSs. The simulation results show that the EE of a system can be effectively improved by selecting the appropriate transmit power for the PBSs. In addition, two-tier MHCPP-PPP Het Nets have higher energy efficiency than two-tier PPP-PPP Het Nets. 展开更多

Device-to-Device(D2D)communication-enabled Heterogeneous Cellular Networks(HCNs)have been a promising technology for satisfying the growing demands of smart mobile devices in fifth-generation mobile networks. The introduction of Millimeter Wave(mm-wave)communications into D2D-enabled HCNs allows higher system capacity and user data rates to be achieved. However, interference among cellular and D2D links remains severe due to spectrum sharing. In this paper,to guarantee user Quality of Service(QoS)requirements and effectively manage the interference among users,we focus on investigating the joint optimization problem of mode selection and channel allocation in D2D-enabled HCNs with mm-wave and cellular bands. The optimization problem is formulated as the maximization of the system sum-rate under QoS constraints of both cellular and D2D users in HCNs.To solve it,a distributed multiagent deep Q-network algorithm is proposed, where the reward function is redefined according to the optimization objective. In addition,to reduce signaling overhead,a partial information sharing strategy that does not observe global information is proposed for D2D agents to select the optimal mode and channel through learning.Simulation results illustrate that the proposed joint optimization algorithm possesses good convergence and achieves better system performance compared with other existing schemes. 展开更多

Due to the limited uplink capability in heterogeneousnetworks (HetNets), the decoupled uplinkand downlink access (DUDA) mode has recently beenproposed to improve the uplink performance. In thispaper, the random discontinuous transmission (DTX)at user equipment (UE) is adopted to reduce the interferencecorrelation across different time slots. By utilizingstochastic geometry, we analytically derive themean local delay and energy efficiency (EE) of an uplinkHetNet with UE random DTX scheme under theDUDA mode. These expressions are further approximatedas closed forms under reasonable assumptions. Our results reveal that under the DUDA mode, there isan optimal EE with respect to mute probability underthe finite local delay constraint. In addition, with thesame finite mean local delay as under the coupled uplinkand downlink access (CUDA) mode, the HetNetsunder the DUDA mode can achieve a higher EE witha lower mute probability. 展开更多

Heterogeneous cellular networks(HCNs)are envisioned as a promising architecture to provide seamless wireless coverage and increase network capacity. However, the densified multi-tier network architecture introduces excessive intra-and cross-tier interference and makes HCNs vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks. In this article,a dynamic spectrum control(DSC)-assisted transmission scheme is proposed for HCNs to strengthen network security and increase the network capacity.Specifically, the proposed DSC-assisted transmission scheme leverages the idea of block cryptography to generate sequence families, which represent the transmission decisions,by performing iterative and orthogonal sequence transformations.Based on the sequence families, multiple users can dynamically occupy different frequency slots for data transmission simultaneously. In addition, the collision probability of the data transmission is analyzed, which results in closed-form expressions of the reliable transmission probability and the secrecy probability. Then, the upper and lower bounds of network capacity are further derived with given requirements on the reliable and secure transmission probabilities.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DSC-assisted scheme can outperform the benchmark scheme in terms of security performance. Finally, the impacts of key factors in the proposed DSC-assisted scheme on the network capacity and security are evaluated and discussed. 展开更多

The Internet of things(IoT) as an important application of future communication networks puts a high premium on delay issues. Thus when Io T applications meet heterogeneous networks(HetNets) where macro cells are overlaid with small cells, some traditional problems need rethinking. In this paper, we investigate the delay-addressed association problem in two-tier Het Nets considering different backhaul technologies. Specifically, millimeter wave and fiber links are used to provide high-capacity backhaul for small cells. We first formulate the user association problem to minimize the total delay which depends on the probability of successful transmission, the number of user terminals(UTs), and the number of base stations(BSs). And then two algorithms for active mode and mixed mode are proposed to minimize the network delay. Simulation results show that algorithms based on mutual selection between UTs and BSs have better performance than those based on distance. And algorithms for mixed modes have less delay than those for active mode when the number of BSs is large enough, compared to the number of UTs. 展开更多

Heterogeneous Networks(HetNets)and cell densification represent promising solutions for the surging data traffic demand in wireless networks. In dense HetNets, user traffic is steered toward the Low-Power Node(LPN)when possible to enhance the user throughput and system capacity by increasing the area spectral efficiency. However, because of the transmit power differences in different tiers of HetNets and irregular service demand,a load imbalance typically exists among different serving nodes. To offload more traffic to LPNs and coordinate the Inter-Cell Interference(ICI),Third-Generation Partnership Project(3GPP)has facilitated the development of the Cell Range Expansion(CRE),enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination(eICIC)and Further enhanced ICIC(FeICIC).In this paper,we develop a cell clustering-based load-aware offsetting and an adaptive Low-Power Subframe(LPS)approach. Our solution allows the separation of User Association(UA)functions at the User Equipment(UE)and network server such that users can make a simple cell-selection decision similar to that in the maximum Received Signal Strength(max-RSS)based UA scheme, where the network server computes the load-aware offsetting and required LPS periods based on the load conditions of the system. The proposed solution is evaluated using system-level simulations wherein the results correspond to performance changes in different service regions. Results show that our method effectively solves the offloading and interference coordination problems in dense HetNets. 展开更多

Due to the unprecedented rate of transformation in thefield of wireless communication industry, there is a need to prioritise the coverage, network power and throughput as preconditions. In Heterogeneous Networks(HetNets)the low power node inclusion like Femto and Pico cells creates a network of Multi-Tier(M-Tier)which is regarded as the most significant strategy for enhancing the coverage,throughput,4G Long Term Evolution(LTE)ability. This work mainly focuses on M-Tier 3D Heterogeneous Networks Energy Efficiency(EE)based Carrier Aggregation(CA)scheme for streaming real-time huge data like images.Atfirst,M-Tier 3D HetNets scheme was made for investigating Signal to Noise Interference Ratio(SNIR)on assessing the collective Pico-tier and Femto-tier interference.Next, the scheme of channel allocation is scrutinised so as to esti-mate throughput from the multiple tiers.Additionally, with the use of CA technique, the problem of energy efficiency for M-Tier 3D Heterogeneous Network(HetNet)in relation to energy metrics and throughput was evaluated with the use of LTE and Wireless Fidelity(Wi-Fi)coexistence.The simulation is carried out in a MATLAB setting, and the outcomes reveal a huge impact on EE.The simulation is carried in terms of EE,transmission time, throughput, packet success rate, convergence probability, and coverage region. The analysis from simu-lation shows that on improving the output of the device, interference among small cell base stations is reduced on increasing EE.The outcomes attained aid in the effective creation of M-Tier 3D HetNets for enhancing EE by employing Multi-Stream Carrier Aggregation(MSCA)in HetNets. 展开更多

A new enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (elCIC) is adopted for managing almost blank sub-frame (ABS),which jointly exploits the time, frequency and power dimensions to improve the resource utilization. In particular, a non-uniform two tier heterogeneous network ( HetNet) is considered, where the pico cells are located close to the macro cell and the number of users in each pico cell is different. To alleviate the interference caused by the co-channeldeployment,the macro cells employ low power ABS (LP- ABS), and the resource blocks (RBs) are divided into twoparts during an ABS. One is exclusively reserved for macro cell users ad the other is reserved for pico cell users. Themacro cells are allowed to use different percentages of RBs and different powers for their own transmission during the LP- ABS. The user association, resource allocation,ABS proportion, the frequency band partition parameter and the transmission power of macro cells are considered, aiming at maximizing the proportional fairness utility of the system. An iterative algorithm is also proposed and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can improve both the system throughput and user fairness compared with the existing schemes. 展开更多
