If any one of the following four conditions is present in some persons, i.e., (1) EBV VCA/IgA titer>1:80, (2) EBV EDAb>60%, (3) Dual or triple positiveness in VCA/IgA, EA/IgA and EDAb, (4) Any one of VCA/IgA, EA/IgA and EDAb keeps high titer or going up, they should be regarded as in precancerosis of NPC. The moderate or severe heteroplasia and heterometaplasia of nasopharyngeal mucosa are the precancerous lesions of NPC. Some individual who is in precancerosis or with precancerous lesion should be regarded as the high risk population of NPC. There was an equilibrium relationship among nutrient elements for high-yielding rice plant populations. The equilibrium index of nutrient amount, content and distribution in high-yielding rice plants should be generally greater than-2 but less than 2. The optimum nutritive proportion of nitrogen: phosphorus: potassium assimilated by the plants was about 10: 2: 9 at the ripening stage. But the content and the proportion varied with the growth stages. Therefore, the nutrient in rice plant populations should be in a dynamic equilibrium, so as to achieve high yield.展开更多

Poor blood transfusion methods along with unsafe injection practices are potential sources for the rapid spread of infection. Early detection of HCV is the need of the hour especially in high riskgroup population as these individuals are severely immunocompromised. Enzyme Immunoassays are the most common detection techniques but they provide no evidence of active viremia or identification of infected individuals in the antibody-negative phase and their efficacy is limited in individuals within high risk group population. Molecular virological techniques have an important role in detecting active infection with utmost specificity and sensitivity. Technologies for assessment of HCV antibody and RNA levels have improved remarkably, as well as our understanding of how to best use these tests in patient management. This review aims to give an overview of the different serological and molecular methods employed in detecting HCV infection used nowadays. Additionally, the review gives an insight in the new molecular techniques that are being developed to improve the detection techniques particularly in High Risk Group population who are severely immunocompromised.展开更多

The experimental results show that a lin||lin tran- sition scheme is a promising alternative to the conventional circular-circular transition scheme for an atomic magnetometer. Compared with the circular light transition scheme, linear light accounts for high-contrast transmission resonances, which makes this excitation scheme promising for high-sensitivity magnetometers. The results revealed abundant diversity in the soil bacterial and fungal populations. In total, 197103 sequence tags were obtained from soil samples, most of which represented bacterial genera Actinomycetes, Bacillus and Marinobacter, while a majority of 118378 tags obtained were derived from fungal genera Clostridium, Devosia, Bradyrhizobium, Bdellovibrio, Phenylobacterium, Penicillium, and Emericella. Furthermore, nine physiological indexes (pH, available phosphorous, basic-group nitrogen, available potassium, catalase, sucrose, urease, phosphatase, and organic matters) were measured in three soil samples, and the association between these physiological indexes and microbe population composition was examined. The results revealed obvious inter-sample differences associated with ten dominating microbial groups: genera Clostridium, Devosia, Bradyrhizobium, Bdellovibrio, Phenylobacterium, and Penicillium were mainly impacted by pH (with a positive correlation), genera Sphingomonas and Acinetobacter mainly by available phosphorous (positive correlation), and genera Gemmatimonas and Pseudomonas by both pH and available phosphorous (negative correlation). Our study suggested that regulation of microbial species/populations might help improve soil environment to facilitate the growth of crops’ above-ground parts, and this provides practical information for inning agriculture.展开更多

The results found that Hb concentration in Himalayan highlanders was systemically lower than those reported for Andean natives and lowland immigrants. These comparative data demonstrated that a healthy native population may successfully reside at high altitude without a significant elevation in Hb, and the lower Hb levels of Himalayan highlanders than those of migrated lowlanders and Andean natives are an example of favourable adaptation over the generations. In addition, excessive polycythemia has frequently been used as a marker of chronic mountain sickness(CMS). Altitude populations who have a higher Hb concentration also have a higher incidence of CMS. The low Hb in Himalayans suggested as showing adaptation over many generations in Tibetan stock. Recent work in Tibet, suggested that Tibetans there may have adapted to high altitude as a result of evolutionary pressure selecting for genes which give an advantage at altitude. All of the population genomic and statistical analysis indicated that EPAS1 and EGLN1 are mostly likely responsible for high altitude adaptation and closely related to low Hb concentration in Tibetans. These data supported the hypothesis that Himalayan highlanders have evolved a genetically different erythropoietic response to chronic hypoxia by virtue of their much longer exposure to high altitude.展开更多

However, as obligatory intracellular parasites, replication of all viruses relies on the host cell. Having co-evolved with their host for several million years, viruses have developed very sophisticated strategies to hijack cellular factors that promote virus uptake, replication, and spread. Identification of host cell factors(HCFs) required for these processes is a major challenge for researchers, but it enables the identification of new, highly selective targets for anti viral therapeutics. To this end, the establishment of platforms enabling genome-wide high-throughput RNA interference(HT-RNAi) screens has led to the identification of several key factors involved in the viral lifecycle. A number of genome-wide HT-RNAi screens have been performed for major human pathogens. These studies enable first inter-viral comparisons related to HCF requirements. Although several cellular functions appear to be uniformly required for the life cycle of most viruses tested(such as the proteasome and the Golgi-mediated secretory pathways), some factors, like the lipid kinase Phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase Ⅲα in the case of hepatitis C virus, are selectively required for individual viruses. However, despite the amount of data available, we are still far away from a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between viruses and host factors. Major limitations towards this goal are the low sensitivity and specificity of such screens, resulting in limited overlap between different screens performed with the same virus. This review focuses on how statistical and bioinformatic analysis methods applied to HTRNAi screens can help overcoming these issues thus increasing the reliability and impact of such studies.展开更多
