Communication Strategies for Chinese Documentaries from High-context to Low-context Culture: A Comparative Study of “Wild China” of BBC and CCTV Version

As an important means of cultural transmission,documentaries are a powerful tool to make known the five thousand years of Chinese civilization to people all over the world.The“Wild China”of BBC version,popular among the great majority of overseas audience,serves as a successful carrier of Chinese culture export.Based on the theory of low-context and high-context culture,this paper uses the method of text analysis and focuses on the study of the texts in the Chinese and English versions of“Wild China”and explores the differences in the texts in terms of content and rhythm.The purpose of this study is to avoid cultural misunderstanding and optimize communication effect.Findings of this study show that against the background of low-context(English)and high-context(Chinese)culture,the English version has a good sense of rhythm,uses rhetoric for vivid description,expresses ideas directly,and provides explanation for phenomena through narrating or telling a story.But Chinese version has plainer descriptions,uses more euphemistic or abstract words,analyzes phenomena in less detail and narrates more formally.So,it is suggested that in translating texts into English,concepts need to be made accessible,logical and direct with more explanation,more rhetoric,more objective evaluation,and less pursuit of artistic abstraction.These communication strategies conforming to low-context culture can help overseas audience accept Chinese culture more easily.

Based on Hall's theory of high-context and low-context culture, this paper analyzes the cultural conflicts in the movie from six perspectives, and offers suggestions to the harmonious development of China and America. It is hoped that the paper can help readers get an in-depth comprehension of Hall's theory of high-context and low-context culture and discover some invisible conflicts between China and the West and finally raise people's consciousness of cultural conflicts and ways of handling the conflicts. The Spatial Communication Between Chinese Teachers and Students in High-Context Class

According to Edward T.Hall,communication is the core of culture,and the use of space or distance plays a key role as a significant cultural factor in the interpersonal relationship.However,as a hidden dimension,it is often out of people’s awareness.This paper aims to explore how Chinese teachers and students respond to each other and their surroundings in the use of space.In addition,considering that China falls into a typical high-context culture,this paper expects to make out the impacts of high-context culture on the use,perception,and sense of the space in the interaction.The study of classroom space will,to a degree,contribute to establishing the relationship of mutual trust and harmony,which is helpful to the teaching and learning.

On the Conversion of High-low Context in English-writing of the Test

The concept of high-low context was firstly put forward by an American anthropologist Edward Hall in 1976. Hereafter, more and more social scientists come to realize the importance of this concept on the thorough understanding of the crossculture discrepancy. This article compares the difference between Chinese(representative of high- context culture) and English(representative of low-context culture) in terms of verbal communication patterns.
