The aim of our study was to examine the contribution of surface waves from WAVEWATCH-III(WW3)to the variation in sea surface temperature(SST)in the Arctic Ocean. The simulated significant wave height(SWH)were validated against the products from Haiyang-2B(HY-2B)in 2021,obtaining a root mean squared error(RMSE)of 0.45 with a correlation of 0.96 and scatter index of 0.18.The wave-induced effects,i.e.,wave breaking and mixing induced by nonbearing waves resulting in changes in radiation stress and Stokes drift, were calculated from WW3,ERA-5 wind,SST,and salinity data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and were taken as forcing fields in the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model. The results showed that an RMSE of 0.81℃ with wave-induced effects was less than the RMSE of 1.11℃ achieved without the wave term compared with the simulated SST with the measurements from Argos.Considering the four wave effects and sea ice freezing, the SST in the Arctic Ocean decreased by up to 1℃ in winter.Regression analysis revealed that the SWH was linear in SST(values without subtraction of waves)in summer and autumn, but this behavior was not observed in spring or winter due to the presence of sea ice.The interannual variation also presented a negative relationship between the difference in SST and SWH. 展开更多

Internal solitary waves(ISW),characterized by large amplitude and long propagation distance, are widespread in global oceans. While remote sensing images have played an essential role in studying ISWs,they mainly exploit two-dimensional image information. However, with the launch of the surface water ocean topography(SWOT)satellite on December 16,2022,a unique opportunity has emerged to capture wide-swath three-dimensional ISW-induced sea surface information. In this study,we examine ISWs in the Andaman Sea using data from the Ka-band Radar Interferometer(KaRIN),a crucial sensor onboard SWOT.KaRIN not only provides backscattering satellite images but also employs synthetic aperture interferometry techniques to retrieve wide-swath two-dimensional sea surface height measurements. Our observations in the Andaman Sea revealed the presence of ISWs characterized by dark-bright strips and surface elevation solitons. The surface soliton has an amplitude of 0.32 m,resulting in an estimation of ISW amplitude of approximately 60 m.In contrast to traditional two-dimensional satellite images or nadir-looking altimetry data, the SWOT mission’s capability to capture threedimensional sea surface information represents a significant advancement. This breakthrough holds substantial promise for ISW studies, particularly in the context of ISW amplitude inversion. 展开更多

Surface Water and Ocean Topography(SWOT)is a next-generation radar altimeter that offers high resolution, wide swath, imaging capabilities. It has provided free public data worldwide since December 2023.This paper aims to preliminarily analyze the detection capabilities of the Ka-band radar interferometer(KaRIn)and Nadir altimeter(NALT),which are carried out by SWOT for internal solitary waves(ISWs),and to gather other remote sensing images to validate SWOT observations.KaRIn effectively detects ISW surface features and generates surface height variation maps reflecting the modulations induced by ISWs.However, its swath width does not completely cover the entire wave packet, and the resolution of L2/L3 level products(about 2 km)cannot be used to identify ISWs with smaller wavelengths.Additionally, significant wave height(SWH)images exhibit blocky structures that are not suitable for ISW studies;sea surface height anomaly(SSHA)images display systematic leftright banding. We optimize this imbalance using detrending methods;however, more precise treatment should commence with L1-level data.Quantitative analysis based on L3-level SSHA data indicates that the average SSHA variation induced by ISWs ranges from 10 cm to 20 cm.NALTs disturbed by ISWs record unusually elevated SWH and SSHA values, rendering the data unsuitable for analysis and necessitating targeted corrections in future retracking algorithms. For the normalized radar cross section,Ku-band and four-parameter maximum likelihood estimation retracking demonstrated greater sensitivity to minor changes in the sea surface, making them more suitable for ISW detection. In conclusion,SWOT demonstrates outstanding capabilities in ISW detection, significantly advancing research on the modulation of the sea surface by ISWs and remote sensing imaging mechanisms. 展开更多

A trigger system is typically employed in active seismic testing to trigger and synchronize multichannel surface wave data acquisition. The effect of the trigger system on the dispersion image of surface waves is empirically known to be negligible, however, theoretical explanation regarding the effect of the trigger system is insufficient. This study systematically examines the theory for surface wave dispersion analysis and proves that the effect of the trigger system on a dispersion image is negligible via a solid theoretical explanation.Subsequently, based on the new theoretical explanation,an alternative method that uses only the relative phase difference between sensors to extract dispersion characteristics with better conceptual clarity is proposed. Two active surface wave testing cases are considered to validate the theory and method. The results indicate that(1)an accurate trigger system is not necessary for surface wave data acquisition,and(2)it is unnecessary to assume that the impact point is the generation point of the surface waves for the experimental dispersion analysis. 展开更多

In recent decades, the importance of surface acoustic waves,as a biocompatible tool to integrate with microfluidics, has been proven in various medical and biological applications. The numerical modeling of acoustic streaming caused by surface acoustic waves in microchannels requires the effect of viscosity to be considered in the equations which complicates the solution. In this paper,it is shown that the major contribution of viscosity and the horizontal component of actuation is concentrated in a narrow region alongside the actuation boundary.Since the inviscid equations are considerably easier to solve,a division into the viscous and inviscid domains would alleviate the computational load significantly. The particles'traces calculated by this approximation are excellently alongside their counterparts from the completely viscous model. It is also shown that the optimum thickness for the viscous strip is about 9-fold the acoustic boundary layer thickness for various flow patterns and amplitudes of actuation. 展开更多

Surface wave inversion is a key step in the application of surface waves to soil velocity profiling.Currently,a common practice for the process of inversion is that the number of soil layers is assumed to be known before using heuristic search algorithms to compute the shear wave velocity profile or the number of soil layers is considered as an optimization variable. However,an improper selection of the number of layers may lead to an incorrect shear wave velocity profile. In this study,a deep learning and genetic algorithm hybrid learning procedure is proposed to perform the surface wave inversion without the need to assume the number of soil layers.First,a deep neural network is adapted to learn from a large number of synthetic dispersion curves for inferring the layer number. Then, the shear-wave velocity profile is determined by a genetic algorithm with the known layer number.By applying this procedure to both simulated and real-world cases, the results indicate that the proposed method is reliable and efficient for surface wave inversion. 展开更多

Lithospheric structure beneath the northeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is of vital significance for studying the geodynamic processes of crustal thickening and expansion of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. We conducted a joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersions with P-wave velocity constraints using data from the Chin Array Ⅱ temporary stations deployed across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Prior to joint inversion, we applied the H-κ-c method(Li JT et al., 2019) to the receiver function data in order to correct for the back-azimuthal variations in the arrival times of Ps phases and crustal multiples caused by crustal anisotropy and dipping interfaces. High-resolution images of vS, crustal thickness, and vP/vSstructures in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau were simultaneously derived from the joint inversion. The seismic images reveal that crustal thickness decreases outward from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The stable interiors of the Ordos and Alxa blocks exhibited higher velocities and lower crustal vP/vSratios. While, lower velocities and higher vP/vSratios were observed beneath the Qilian Orogen and Songpan-Ganzi terrane(SPGZ), which are geologically active and mechanically weak, especially in the mid-lower crust.Delamination or thermal erosion of the lithosphere triggered by hot asthenospheric flow contributes to the observed uppermost mantle low-velocity zones(LVZs) in the SPGZ. The crustal thickness, vS, and vP/vSratios suggest that whole lithospheric shortening is a plausible mechanism for crustal thickening in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, supporting the idea of coupled lithospheric-scale deformation in this region. 展开更多

The internal energy distribution of waves can be described using ocean-wave spectra. In many ways, obtaining wave spectra on a global scale is critical.Surface waves investigation and monitoring onboard the Chinese-French oceanography satellite is the first space-borne instrument for detecting wave spectra specially, which was launched on October 29,2018.It can avoid the shortage of synthetic aperture radar detection results while still having some problems, especially with the effects of speckle noise. In this study,a method to suppress the speckle noise is proposed.First, the empirical formula for background speckle noise is established.Second, many spatio-temporal representative fluctuation spectra are classified and averaged.Third, rational transfer function filtering is used to obtain speckle noise close to the along-track direction. Finally,a signal-to-noise ratio threshold is used to suppress the abnormal speckle noise. This method solves the problems existing in previous denoising methods, such as excessive denoising in the along-track direction and the inability of some abnormal noises to be denoised in the two-dimensional directional wave spectra. 展开更多

The investigations of surface waves in the piezoelectric medium bring out great possibility in designing smart surface acoustic wave(SAW)devices. It is important to study the dispersion properties and manipulation mechanism of surface waves in the semi-infinite piezoelectric medium connected with periodic arrangement of shunting circuits. In this study, the extended Stroh formalism is developed to theoretically analyze the dispersion relations of surface waves under different external circuits. The band structures of both the Rayleigh wave and the Bleustein-Gulyaev(BG)wave can be determined and manipulated with proper electrical boundary conditions.Furthermore, the electromechanical coupling effects on the band structures of surface waves are discussed to figure out the manipulation mechanism of adjusting electric circuit. The results indicate that the proposed method can explain the propagation behaviors of surface waves under the periodic electrical boundary conditions, and can provide an important theoretical guidance for designing novel SAW devices and exploring extensive applications in practice. 展开更多

High-frequency surface wave radar(HFSWR) and automatic identification system(AIS) are the two most important sensors used for vessel tracking. The HFSWR can be applied to tracking all vessels in a detection area, while the AIS is usually used to verify the information of cooperative vessels.Because of interference from sea clutter, employing single-frequency HFSWR for vessel tracking may obscure vessels located in the blind zones of Bragg peaks.Analyzing changes in the detection frequencies constitutes an effective method for addressing this deficiency.A solution consisting of vessel fusion tracking is proposed using dual-frequency HFSWR data calibrated by the AIS.Since different systematic biases exist between HFSWR frequency measurements and AIS measurements,AIS information is used to estimate and correct the HFSWR systematic biases at each frequency.First,AIS point measurements for cooperative vessels are associated with the HFSWR measurements using a JVC assignment algorithm. From the association results of the cooperative vessels, the systematic biases in the dualfrequency HFSWR data are estimated and corrected. Then, based on the corrected dual-frequency HFSWR data, the vessels are tracked using a dual-frequency fusion joint probabilistic data association(JPDA)-unscented Kalman filter(UKF) algorithm.Experimental results using real-life detection data show that the proposed method is efficient at tracking vessels in real time and can improve the tracking capability and accuracy compared with tracking processes involving single-frequency data. 展开更多

Passive surface-wave utilization has been intensively studied as a means of compensating for the short-age of low-frequency information in active surface-wave measurement, In general, passive surface-wave methods cannot provide phase velocities up to several tens of hertz; thus, active surface-wave methods are often required in order to increase the frequency range, To reduce the amount of field work, we pro-pose a strategy for a high-frequency passive surface-wave survey that imposes active sources during con-tinuous passive surface-wave observation; we call our strategy "mixed-source surface-wave (MSW) measurement," Short-duration (within 10 min) passive surface waves and mixed-source surface waves were recorded at three sites with different noise levels: namely, inside a school, along a road, and along a railway, Spectral analysis indicates that the high-frequency energy is improved by imposing active sources during continuous passive surface-wave observation, The spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method and the multichannel analysis of passive surface waves (MAPS) method based on cross-correlations were performed on the recorded time sequences, The results demonstrate the flexibility and applicability of the proposed method for high-frequency phase velocity analysis, We suggest that it will be constructive to perform MSW measurement in a seismic investigation, rather than exclusively performing either active surface-wave measurement or passive surface-wave measurement, 展开更多

The aim of this study is to investigate the sea surface temperature(SST) cooling as typhoons pass the Kuroshio Current.A numerical circulation model, denoted as the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model(sbPOM),was used to simulate the SST,which includes four wave-induced effect terms(i.e.,radiation stress, nonbreaking waves,Stokes drift, and breaking waves) simulated using the third-generation wave model, called WAVEWATCH-Ⅲ(WW3).The significant wave height(SWH) measurements from the Jason-2 altimeter were used to validate the WW3-simulated results, yielding a root mean square error(RMSE) of less than 0.50 m and a correlation coefficient(COR) of approximately 0.93.The water temperature measured from the Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite was applied to validate the model simulation.Accordingly, the RMSE of the SST is 0.92℃ with a COR of approximately 0.99.As revealed in the sbPOM-simulated SST fields,a reduction in the SST at the Kuroshio Current region was observed as a typhoon passed, although the water temperature of the Kuroshio Current is relatively high. The variation of the SST is consistent with that of the current, whereas the maximum SST lagged behind the occurrence of the peak SWH.Moreover, the Stokes drift plays an important role in the SST cooling after analyzing four wave-induced terms in the background of the Kuroshio Current. The sensitivity experiment also showed that the accuracy of the water temperature was significantly reduced when including breaking waves, which play a negative role in the inside part of the ocean. The variation in the mean mixing layer depth(MLD) showed that a typhoon could enhance the mean MLD in the Kuroshio Current area in September and October, whereas a typhoon has little influence on the mean MLD in the Kuroshio Current area in May.Moreover, the mean MLD rapidly decreased with the weakening of the strong wind force and wave-induced effects when a typhoon crossed the Kuroshio Current. 展开更多

Porous carbon(PC)is a promising electromagnetic(EM)wave absorbing material thanks to its light weight, large specific surface area as well as good dissipating capacity. To further improve its microwave absorbing performance, silver coated porous carbon(Ag@PC)is synthesized by one-step hydro-thermal synthesis process making use of fir as a biomass formwork.Phase compositions, morphological structure, and microwave absorption capability of the Ag@PC has been explored.Research results show that the metallic Ag was successfully reduced and the particles are evenly distributed inward the pores of the carbon formwork, which accelerates graphitization process of the amorphous carbon. The Ag@PC composite without adding polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP)exhibits higher dielectric constant and better EM wave dissipating capability. This is because the larger particles of Ag give rise to higher electric conductivity. After combing with frequency selective surface(FSS),the EM wave absorbing performance is further improved and the frequency region below-10 d B is located in8.20-11.75 GHz,and the minimal reflection loss value is-22.5 dB.This work indicates that incorporating metallic Ag particles and FSS provides a valid way to strengthen EM wave absorbing capacity of PC material. 展开更多

The importance of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO)and Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation(IPO)in influencing zonally asymmetric changes in Antarctic surface air temperature(SAT)has been established. However, previous studies have primarily concentrated on examining the combined impact of the contrasting phases of the AMO and IPO,which have been dominant since the advent of satellite observations in 1979.This study utilizes long-term reanalysis data to investigate the impact of four combinations of+AMO+IPO,–AMO–IPO,+AMO–IPO,and–AMO+IPO on Antarctic SAT over the past 115 years. The+AMO phase is characterized by a spatial mean temperature amplitude of up to 0.5℃over the North Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by positive sea surface temperature(SST)anomalies in the tropical eastern Pacific and negative SST anomalies in the extratropical-mid-latitude western Pacific, which are indicative of the+IPO phase. The Antarctic SAT exhibits contrasting spatial patterns during the+AMO+IPO and+AMO–IPO periods. However, during the–AMO+IPO period, apart from the Antarctic Peninsula and the vicinity of the Weddell Sea,the entire Antarctic region experiences a warming trend. The most pronounced signal in the SAT anomalies is observed during the austral autumn, whereas the combination of–AMO and–IPO exhibits the smallest magnitude across all the combinations. The wavetrain excited by the SST anomalies associated with the AMO and IPO induces upper-level and surface atmospheric circulation anomalies, which alter the SAT anomalies.Furthermore, downward longwave radiation anomalies related to anomalous cloud cover play a crucial role.In the future,if the phases of AMO and IPO were to reverse(AMO transitioning to a negative phase and IPO transitioning to a positive phase),Antarctica could potentially face more pronounced warming and accelerated melting compared to the current observations. 展开更多

Wireless Power Transfer(WPT)technology can provide real-time power for many terminal devices in Internet of Things(IoT)through millimeterWave(mmWave)to support applications with large capacity and low latency.Although the intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)can be adopted to create effective virtual links to address the mmWave blockage problem, the conventional solutions only adopt IRS in the downlink from the Base Station(BS)to the users to enhance the received signal strength. In practice, the reflection of IRS is also applicable to the uplink to improve the spectral efficiency. It is a challenging to jointly optimize IRS beamforming and system resource allocation for wireless energy acquisition and information transmission. In this paper,we first design a Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy(LEACH)clustering protocol for clustering and data collection. Then, the problem of maximizing the minimum system spectral efficiency is constructed by jointly optimizing the transmit power of sensor devices, the uplink and downlink transmission times, the active beamforming at the BS,and the IRS dynamic beamforming. To solve this non-convex optimization problem,we propose an alternating optimization(AO)-based joint solution algorithm.Simulation results show that the use of IRS dynamic beamforming can significantly improve the spectral efficiency of the system, and ensure the reliability of equipment communication and the sustainability of energy supply under NLOS link. 展开更多

To study the damage to an elastic cylinder immersed in fluid, a model of an elastic cylinder wrapped with a porous medium immersed in fluid is designed. This structure can both identify the properties of guided waves in a more practical model and address the relationship between the cylinder damage degree and the surface and surrounding medium. The principal motivation is to perform a detailed quantitative analysis of the longitudinal mode and flexural mode in an elastic cylinder wrapped with a porous medium immersed in fluid. The frequency equations for the propagation of waves are derived each for a pervious surface and an impervious surface by employing Biot theory. The influences of the various parameters of the porous medium wrapping layer on the phase velocity and attenuation are discussed. The results show that the influences of porosity on the dispersion curves of guided waves are much more significant than those of thickness, whereas the phase velocity is independent of the static permeability. There is an apparent “mode switching” between the two low-order modes. The characteristics of attenuation are in good agreement with the results from the dispersion curves. This work can support future studies for optimizing the theory on detecting the damage to cylinder or pipeline. 展开更多

In this paper,an integrated substrate gap waveguide(ISGW)filtering antenna is proposed at millimeter wave band, whose surface wave and spurious modes are simultaneously suppressed.A secondorder filtering response is obtained through a coupling feeding scheme using one uniform impedance resonator(UIR)and two stepped-impedance resonators(SIRs).To increase the stopband width of the antenna, the spurious modes are suppressed by selecting the appropriate sizes of the ISGW unit cell.Furthermore, the ISGW is implemented to improve the radiation performance of the antenna by alleviating the propagation of surface wave. And an equivalent circuit is investigated to reveal the working principle of ISGW.To demonstrate this methodology,an ISGW filtering antenna operating at a center frequency of 25 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured. The results show that the antenna achieves a stopband width of 1.6f0(center frequency),an out-of-band suppression level of 21 dB,and a peak realized gain of 8.5 dBi. 展开更多

This paper puts forward a novel method of measuring the thin period-structure-film thickness based on the Bloch surface wave(BSW) enhanced Goos–Hanchen(GH) shift in one-dimensional photonic crystal(1DPC). The BSW phenomenon appearing in 1DPC enhances the GH shift generated in the attenuated total internal reflection structure. The GH shift is closely related to the thickness of the film which is composed of layer-structure of 1DPC. The GH shifts under multiple different incident light conditions will be obtained by varying the wavelength and angle of the measured light, and the thickness distribution of the entire structure of 1DPC is calculated by the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm. The relationship between the structure of a 1DPC film composed of TiO_(2) and SiO_(2) layers and the GH shift, is investigated.Under the specific photonic crystal structure and incident conditions, a giant GH shift, 5.1 × 10^(3) times the wavelength of incidence, can be obtained theoretically. Simulation and calculation results show that the thickness of termination layer and periodic structure bilayer of 1DPC film with 0.1-nm resolution can be obtained by measuring the GH shifts. The exact structure of a 1DPC film is innovatively measured by the BSW-enhanced GH shift. 展开更多
