Life Expectancy Study International geriatric life science community, including medical and scientific communities, currently considers human life expectancy to be about 120 years. This is in congruence with recordings from "Hong Fan-Book of Documents (Shang Shu Hong Fan)", and is also in general agreement with teachings from "Longevity-Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine (Huang Di Nei Jing ~ Tian Nian)" where it is said 'a man is to die at age of a hundred years' meaning 'passing away after living a hundred years'. Recently there is a report of people dying at the age of 150 years in England, I am afraid this is misinformed. 展开更多

Objective: To determine whether patterns of enterovirus 71(EV71)-associated hand, foot, and mouth disease(HFMD) were classified based on symptoms and signs, and explore whether individual characteristics were correlated with membership in particular pattern. Methods: Symptom-based latent class analysis(LCA) was used to determine whether patterns of EV71-HFMD existed in a sample of 433 cases from a clinical data warehouse system. Logistic regression was then performed to explore whether demographic, and laboratory data were associated with pattern membership. Results: LCA demonstrated a two-subgroup solution with an optimal fit, deduced according to the Bayesian Information Criterion minima. Hot pattern(59.1% of all patients) was characterized by a very high fever and high endorsement rates for classical HFMD symptoms(i.e., rash on the extremities, blisters, and oral mucosa lesions). Non-hot pattern(40.9% of all patients) was characterized by classical HFMD symptoms. The multiple logistic regression results suggest that white blood cell counts and aspartate transaminase were positively correlated with the hot pattern(adjust odds ratio=1.07, 95% confidence interval: 1.006–1.115; adjust odds ratio=1.051, 95% confidence interval: 1.019–1.084; respectively). Conclusions: LCA on reported symptoms and signs in a retrospective study allowed different subgroups with meaningful clinical correlates to be defined. These findings provide evidence for targeted prevention and treatment interventions. 展开更多

The journal Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics (GPB) is now inviting submissions for a special issue (to be published in the fall of 2016) on the topic of "Biomarkers for Human Diseases and Translational Medicine". In the personalized medicine era, disease biomarkers have potential application in diagnosis, prognosis, and guidance for treatment, and are important tools in translational medicine. Diagnosis upon biomarkers would aid in early and more efficient intervention, while prognostic biomarkers could lead to right decision of medical treatment. 展开更多

Objective: To investigate the potential effect of pure total flavonoids from Citrus paradisi Macfad peel(PTFC) on the proliferation and apoptosis of human myeloid leukemia cells Kasumi-1, HL-60 and K562, and the underlying mechanisms. Methods: PTFC was extracted from Citrus paradisi Macfad peel and was identified by high performance liquid chromatography. The effect of PTFC on the proliferation and apoptosis of leukemia cells were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, fluorescent microscopy and flow cytometry, respectively. The effect of PTFC on the expression levels of apoptosis-related regulators was determined by Western blot assay. Results: Treatment with PTFC inhibited leukemia cell proliferation in a dose-and time-dependent manner and triggered Kasumi-1 cell apoptosis. Treatment with PTFC significantly increased the levels of activated poly adenosine diphosphate-ribosepolymerase and caspase-3/-9, but reduced the levels of Mcl-1 expression in Kasumi-1 cells. However, PTFC did not obviously induce HL-60 cell apoptosis. Conclusion: PTFC inhibited leukemia cell proliferation and induced their apoptosis by modulating apoptosisrelated regulator expression in leukemia cells in vitro. 展开更多
