The Shima yield criterion used in finite element analysis for nickel-based superalloy powder compact during hot isostatic pressing(HIP) was modified through uniaxial compression experiments. The influence of cylindrical capsule characteristics on FGH4096M superalloy powder compact deformation and densification behavior during HIP was investigated through simulations and experiments. Results revealed the simulation shrinkage prediction fitted well with the experimental shrinkage including a maximum shrinkage error of 1.5%. It was shown that the axial shrinkage was 1.7% higher than radial shrinkage for a cylindrical capsule with the size of ∮50 mm × 100 mm due to the force arm difference along the axial and radial direction of the capsule. The stress deviated from the isostatic state in the capsule led to the uneven shrinkage and non-uniform densification of the powder compact. The ratio of the maximum radial displacement to axial displacement increased from0.47 to 0.75 with the capsule thickness increasing from 2 to 4 mm. The pressure transmission is related to the capsule thickness, the capsule material performance, and physical parameters in the HIP process. 展开更多

Compared with con... Orthogonal experiment is employed to study a new kind of multiplex flux for nickel-base superalloy. This activated TIG welding flux is composed of NaF, MgF2 and CaF2, and their proportion is 5:4:1. Compared with conventional TIG welding, the penetration increases 164% by the action of the flux. Tensile test result indicates that the fracture strength of the mixed flux A-TIG weld bead is higher than base metal, and it increases along with the decrement of the welding current. The average extensibility of the weldment is beyond 100%, which means perfect ductility. MetaUographs elucidate that there exist lots of deep and evenly distributed dimples on the fiacture section of weld bead while on that of base metal there only exists a few shallow dimples and massive tearing ridge. 展开更多

The results indicate that the surface microstructure of powderschanges from dendrite into cellular stricture as the particle size of powders decrease, and thepredominant precipitates solidified on the particle surfaces were identified as MC' type carbidesenriched with Nb and Ti. It was also indicated that along with the depth of particle surfaces, thesegregation layer of S, C and O elements are thick, and that of Ti, Cr elements are thin for largesire powders while they are in reverse for median size particles. 展开更多

The coarsening behavior of γ' particles in a nickel-base superalloy FGH95 was investigated by means of experimental observations and growth kinetics calculations. The results show that when aging at 1000,1080 and 1140°C for different times,the relation of average particle size to time obeys the cube law ( a /2)3= kt,where k is 15.49 × 103,77.5 × 103 and 230.04 × 103 nm3/min,respectively. The particle size distributions are better fit to the LSW theoretical distributions when aging at 1000°C within 1440 min. The activation energy for γ' particles coarsening is determined to be 288.20±1.79 kJ/mol,which correlates well to the diffusion activation energies of Al,Ti,and Nb in the nickel matrix. This indicates that the coarsening of γ' particles is controlled by the diffusion of Al,Ti,and Nb in the nickel matrix. The coarsening kinetics of γ' particles in FGH95 is predicted as rt 3 = 1.04 × 10 16t exp[-(288200 ± 1790 )/RT]. 展开更多

The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of a nickel-based single crystal superalloy with [001] orientation was studied at an intermediate temperature of T0℃ and a higher temperature of To + 250℃ under a constant low strain rate of 10^-3 s^-1 in ambient atmosphere. The superalloy exhibited cyclic tension-compression asymmetry which is dependent on the temperature and applied strain amplitude. Analysis on the fracture surfaces showed that the surface and subsurface casting micropores were the major crack initiation sites. Interior Ta-rich carbides were frequently observed in all specimens. Two distinct types of fracture were suggested by fractogaphy. One type was characterized by Mode-I cracking with a microscopically rough surface at To + 250℃. Whereas the other type at lower temperature T0℃ favored either one or several of the octahedral {111} planes, in contrast to the normal Mode-I growth mode typically observed at low loading frequencies (several Hz). The failure mechanisms for two cracking modes are shearing of γ' precipitates together with the matrix at T0℃ and cracking confined in the matrix and the γ/γ'interface at To - 250℃. 展开更多

In situ fatigue tests in special designed SEM were conducted to trace the whole process of crack initiation and propagation fill to fracture in mckel-base P/M superalloy seeded inclusions. The experimental results show that non-metallic inclusions can induce crack initiation. When the inclusion size is larger than the critical one, the crack can propagate as the main crack that induces the specimen to fracture. As a result, the LCF life of the specimen decreases. 展开更多

The service performance of the turbine blade root of an aero-engine depends on the microstructures in its superficial layer.This work investigated the surface deformation structures of turbine blade root of single crystal nickel-based superalloy produced under different creep feed grinding conditions.Gradient microstructures in the superficial layer were clarified and composed of a severely deformed layer(DFL)with nano-sized grains(48–67 nm)at the topmost surface,a DFL with submicron-sized grains(66–158 nm)and micron-sized laminated structures at the subsurface,and a dislocation accumulated layer extending to the bulk material.The formation of such gradient microstructures was found to be related to the graded variations in the plastic strain and strain rate induced in the creep feed grinding process,which were as high as 6.67 and 8.17×10^(7)s^(−1),respectively.In the current study,the evolution of surface gradient microstructures was essentially a transition process from a coarse single crystal to nano-sized grains and,simultaneously,from one orientation of a single crystal to random orientations of polycrystals,during which the dislocation slips dominated the creep feed grinding induced microstructure deformation of single crystal nickel-based superalloy. 展开更多

The present research aims to establish a quantitative relation between microstructure and chemical composition (i.e., Ti, Al, and Nb) of newly designed nickel-based superalloys. This research attempts to identify an optimum microstructure at which the minimum quanti- fies of γ/γ' and γ/γ" compounds are achieved and the best castability is predicted. The results demonstrate that the highest quantity of inter- metallic eutectics (i.e., 41.5wt%) is formed at 9.8wt% (Ti + A1). A significant quantity of intermetallics formed in superalloy 1 (with a com- position of7 - 9.8wt% (Ti + A1)), which can deteriorate its castability. The type and morphology of the eutectics changed and the amount considerably decreased with decreasing Ti + A1 content in superalloy 2 (with a composition ofy - 7.6wt% (Ti + A1), 1.Swt% Nb). Thus, it is predicted that the castability would improve for superalloy 2. The same trend was observed for superalloy 4 (with a composition of 7 - 3.7wt% (Ti + A1), 4.4wt% Nb). This means that the amount of Laves increases with increasing Nb (to 4.4wt%) and decreasing Ti + A1 (to 3.7wt%) in su- peralloy 4. The best castability was predicted for superalloy 3 (with a composition ofy - 5.7wt% (Ti + A1), 2.8wt% Nb). 展开更多

Evaluating the recyclability of powders in additive manufacturing has been a long-term challenge.In this study,the microstructure and mechanical properties of a nickel-based superalloy fabricated by laser powder-bed fusion(LPBF)using recycled powders were investigated.Re-melted powder surfaces,satellite particles,and deformed powders were found in the recycled powders,combined with a high-oxygencontent surface layer.The increasing oxygen content led to the formation of high-density oxide inclusions;moreover,printing-induced cracks widely occurred and mainly formed along the grain boundaries in the as-built LPBF nickel-based superalloys fabricated using recycled powders.A little change in the Si or Mn content did not increase the hot cracking susceptibility(HCS)of the printed parts.The changing aspect ratio and the surface damage of the recycled powders might contribute to increasing the crack density.Moreover,the configuration of cracks in the as-built parts led to anisotropic mechanical properties,mainly resulting in extremely low ductility vertical to the building direction,and the cracks mainly propagated along the cellular boundary owing to the existence of a brittle precipitation phase. 展开更多

The microstructure of brazing seam especially morphology of gamma ' phase and boride was observed and the strength of brazing seam was measured in this process. The results show that heat treatment can enhance high-temperature stress rupture strength by improving the microstructure of brazing seam. The strength of brazing seam after solution heat treatment decreases in comparison with that only after diffusion treatment while aging treatment after solution heat treatment increases the strength of brazing seam. 展开更多

Hot-corrosion scale of the superalloy and aluminide diffusion coating were analyzed and their surface morphologies were observed. The results demonstrate that both coated and uncoated specimens are not susceptible to various contents of NaCI. That may be resulted from the AI2O3 scale formation. An austenitic stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti and a solid solution-strengthened Ni-base superalloy GH30 were shock processed using a Q-switched pulsed Nd-glass laser. Microstructure, hardness and residual stress of the laser shock processed surface were investigated as functions of laser processing parameters. Results show that high density of dislocations and fine deformation twins are produced in the laser shock processed surface layers in both the austenitic stainless steel and the nickel-base superalloy. Extensive strain-induced martensite was also observed in the laser shock processed zone of the austenitic steel. The hardness of the laser shock processed surface was significantly enhanced and compressive stress as high as 400 MPa was produced in the laser shock processed surface. 展开更多

It is found that the majorprecipitates of the tested alloy are MC, M_(23)C_6, M_6C and y' in the course of long4erm aging at700 deg C. The carbides maintain good thermal stability with the aging time up to 5008 h. The growthrate of gamma prime precipitates is relatively high in the early aging period and then slows down.The coarsening behavior of gamma prime follows a diffusion-controlled growth procedure. The roomtemperature Rockwell hardness of the alloy aged at 700 deg C increases slightly at the initial stageof aging, but it decreases with the prolonged time. It mainly depends on the size of gamma prime.In comparison with Nimonic alloy 263, the new alloy characterizes with higher tensile andstress-rupture strengths at high temperatures. The new nickel-base superalloy offers a combinationof microstructure stability, strength, ductility and toughness at 700 deg C. 展开更多

Fully reversed low cyclic fatigue (LCF) tests were conducted on [0 0 1], [0 1 2], [(1) over bar 1 2], [0 1 1] and [(1) over bar 1 4] oriented single crystals of nickel-bared superalloy DD3 with different cyclic strain rates at 950 degrees C. The cyclic strain rates were chosen as 1.0 x 10(-2), 1.33 x 10(-3) and 0.33 x 10(-3) s(-1). The octahedral slip systems were confirmed to be activated on all the specimens. The experimental result shows that the fatigue behavior depends an the crystallographic orientation and cyclic strain rate. Except [0 0 1] orientation specimens, it is found from the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) examination that there are typical fatigue striations on the fracture surfaces. These fatigue striations are made up of cracks. The width of the fatigue striations depends on the crystallographic orientation and varies with the total strain range. A simple linear relationship exists between the width and total shear strain range modified by an orientation and strain rate parameter. The nonconformity to the Schmid law of tensile/compressive flaw stress and plastic behavior existed at 95 degrees C, and an orientation and strain rate modified Lall-Chin-Pope ( LCP) model was derived for the nonconformity. The influence of crysrallographic orientation and cyclic strain rate on the LCF behavior can be predicted satisfactorily by the model. In terms of an orientation and strain rate modified total strain range, a model for fatigue life was proposed and used successfully to correlate the fatigue lives studied. 展开更多

The oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy at 1000°C in air was investigated through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis. A series of oxides, including external oxide scales(Cr_2O_3,(TiO_2 + Mn Cr_2O_4)) and internal oxides(Al_2O_3,Ti N), were formed on the surface or sub-surface of the substrate at 1000°C in experimental still air. The oxidation resistance of the alloy was dependent on the stability of the surface oxide layer. The continuity and density of the protective Cr_2O_3 scale were affected by minor alloying elements such as Ti and Mn. The outermost oxide scale was composed of TiO_2 rutile and Mn Cr_2O_4 spinel, and the growth of TiO_2 particles was controlled by the outer diffusion of Ti ions through the pre-existing oxide layer. Severe internal oxidation occurred beneath the external oxide scale, consuming Al and Ti of the strength phase γ′(Ni_3(Al,Ti)) and thereby severely deteriorating the surface mechanical properties. The depth of the internal oxidation region was approximately 35 μm after exposure to experimental air at 1000°C for 80 h. 展开更多

Grain growth, mechanical properties, and fracture mechanism of nickel-based GH4099 superalloy are investigated using heat treatments, tensile tests, optical microscopy (OM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The OM observation shows that the matrix grains (γ-grains) undergo an apparent growth during the solution treatment. The grain size diameter increases from 100 to 174 μm when the solution temperature rises from 1100℃ to 1160℃ for 30 min. When the holding time increases from 15 to 60 min at 1140℃, the grain size diameter increases from 140 to 176 μm, indicating that the γ-grain growth is more sensitive to temperature than time. Standard deviation, <em>S</em><sub>v</sub>, and the grain size distribution are utilized to characterize the microstructural uniformity. To predict the grain size more accurately, we develop the grain growth kinetics and find that the growth index is close to 5. The yield strength (<em>R</em><sub>p0.2</sub>), tensile strength (<em>R</em><sub>m</sub>), and ductility (<em>A</em><sub>f</sub>) are also measured. It is found that the effect decreases in the order cooling rate, solution temperature, time. <em>R</em><sub>p0.2</sub> reduces by 47% with the increase in the cooling rate from 1℃ to 8000℃/min, while both strength and ductility exhibit little changes with time. The SEM results show that the fracture surfaces have typical mixed brittle and ductile characteristics when specimens are subjected to water quenching and air cooling. However, a complete brittle fracture occurs under furnace cooling conditions. The EDS analysis indicates that the brittle γ' (Ni<sub>3</sub>Ti) phase precipitates around the γ-grain boundary during the slow cooling process, which is the main factor yielding the complete brittle fracture. Finally, the optimal solution treatment scheme for the GH4099 superalloy is proposed—a temperature of 1140℃ for 30 min followed by air cooling. 展开更多

Inconel 718高温合金表面制备的铝化物涂层的组织结构及其形成机理,是提高该高温合金抗高温氧化和耐腐蚀性能的关键。采用化学气相沉积法在高温合金Inconel 718表面制备了铝化物涂层,通过结合使用材料热力学模拟软件JMatPro、X射线衍射仪、X射线能谱仪和扫描电子显微镜等表征手段,详细研究了铝化物涂层的微观组织结构。研究结果表明:在1 050℃温度条件下,经过1.5 h反应,Inconel 718表面生成了双层结构的铝化物涂层,其外层厚度为14.1μm,主要由β-NiAl相组成,内层厚度为5.9μm,由σ相和Laves相组成;外层的β-NiAl相形成是由Inconel 718高温合金中的Ni元素外扩散至表面后,与环境中的卤化铝反应而生成的;大量的Ni元素外扩散导致高温合金中的γ-Ni相减少,当高温合金中Ni元素的含量(原子分数)减少至49%时γ-Ni相中开始析出Laves相,当Ni元素的含量减少至40%时σ相也开始析出,当Ni元素的含量最终降至9%时Inconel 718高温合金完全转变成由σ相和Laves相组成的铝化物内层。研究结果深入揭示了涂层形成的机理,为优化铝化物涂层制备工艺提供了重要的理论基础。同时,对于Inconel718高温合金的高温稳定性和腐蚀性能的提升具有实际应用价值。 展开更多

Hot cracking susceptibility of fillers 52 and 82 in 800H and 825 nickel-base superalloys was discussed using the Spot Varestraint test.The fillers of 52 and 82 were added into nickel-base superalloys via a gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW).Experimental results showed that the hot cracking sensitivity of the nickel-base superalloys with filler at high temperature was lower than that without filler.The hot cracking sensitivity had a slight effect when the filler 82 was added.The total length of crack was increased,the liquid-solid(L-S)two-phase range is higher so that the hot cracking susceptibility will be raised.The morphologies of cracks included the intergranular crack in the molten pool,molten pool of solidification cracking,heat-affected zone of intergranular cracks,and transgranular crack in the heat-affected zone. 展开更多
