It identifies two senses of illocutionary force: The active function of language is defined as lFl and the varying degrees of the strength of the speech act are defined as IF2. The implications of the two senses ofillocutionary force for translation studies are discussed in a case study of the translation of directives in Chinese versions of Shakespeare's play, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Translation shifts in transferring IF2, as manifested in pragmatic duality features of directness/indirectness, tone articles, repetition of verbs, action measure verbs, upgrader ",给我" and honorific addressing terms and vocatives are discussed. The notion's potential as a criterion to evaluate translation quality is also explored.展开更多

In the different positions of the various sentence types in Mandarin, ba performs specific speech acts and encodes a specific illocutionary force from the perspective of pragmatic discourse analysis. Under the Universal Spine Hypothesis, the sentence-internal ba relates to the grounding layer, and the sentence-final ba is located in the responding layer, which is extended domains of the Universal Spine Hypothesis.展开更多

In the discourse theory, this kind of power is the vehicle that grants verbal communication structure—“illocutionary force”, which makes the compulsoriness of legal discourse possible and at the same time imposes constraints on it. By introducing the concept of “illocutionary force” from classic discourse theory, the compulsory relationship between the orator and the audience in legal discourse has been revealed. To put it clearly, the relationship consists of external compulsoriness and internal compulsoriness, the former of which can be divided into three categories:“prohibition”,“distinction” and “acknowledgement” and the later encompasses “commentary”,“signature” and “paradigm”.展开更多

The theme is developed partly as a historical survey, from the Classical Age to Romanticism and to Modernism, and through the history of aesthetics in Western terms. It offers critical scrutiny with the intention to explore a more justifiable theory of representation. Hopefully it may help to understand lyric poetry in historical contexts from Plato and Aristotle's imitation theories, to Beardsley's theory of illocutionary action and New Criticism. It is the image in lyric poetry that accounts for human action's being represented. Poetic beauty is an illusionary reality, as that in painting, and the role of image has been widely appreciated in producing this beauty as verbal icon. Finally, I mention the connection between Western theorizing of poetry as representation and Chinese poetry and poetics in general. We see the possibility that the importance of lyric poetry as representation can encourage comparative literature and world literature, and a general theory of representation. These might be informative in Chinese literary studies, from a theoretical point of view.展开更多
