The morphology of carbides, as well as the generation and propagation of fatigue cracks in a wear resistant white cast iron after impact fatigue test were observed by means of optical microscope and SEM, and the relationship among the content of RE (rare earths) in the wear resistant white cast iron and the heating temperature as well as the length and propagation speed of the fatigue cracks were determined. Based on the obtained results, the effect of RE modification and heat treatment on the impact fatigue property was further studied. Experimental results show that addition of RE can defer the time required for the generation of fatigue cracks, reduce their propagation speed and increase the impact fatigue resistance. The aforesaid effect is more noticeable in case of combined RE modification with heat treatment, which can be attributed to the variation in morphology and the distribution of the eutectic carbide network. 展开更多

The existing models are established based on the fatigue behavior of impacted laminates. It makes them unsuitable for the general use. So,a general 3-D progressive damage fatigue life prediction method for impacted laminates is developed based on the progressive damage theory and the fatigue behavior of unimpacted unidirectional plies. The model can predict the fatigue life of laminated composites with different ply parameters, geometry, impact damage, and fatigue loading conditions. In order to obtain the impact damage information in the case that no impact test data is available,a whole damage process analysis method for laminated composites under the impact loading and the fatigue loading is analyzed. The predicted damage statuses of composite laminates can be used to analyze the post-impact fatigue life.A parametric modeling program is developed to predict the impact damage process and the fatigue life of impacted laminates based on the whole damage process analysis method. The most relative error between the prediction and the test results is 7.78%. 展开更多

A great amount of iron grinding balls in tube mills have been consumed. Under this impact abrasive wear working condition, the failure of wear resistant alloying white irons grinding balls is mainly caused by fatigue spalling. The impact wear resistance of martensitic high chromium cast iron (Cr of 15%) is not high sometimes, but its cost is not low. Thus, medium Cr-Si wear resistant cast iron is recommended. The influence of the iron on impact fatigue resistance and impact wear resistance is pronounced. Ball-on-ball impact fatigue test and high stress impact wear test of the grinding balls have been carried out. The results show that the impact fatigue resistance (IFR) and impact wear resistance (IWR) of medium Cr-Si cast iron are superior to those of martensitic high chromium cast iron (Cr of 15%). The main reasons are that (1) the stress in medium Cr-Si cast iron is released in the as-cast state; (2) the matrix is fine pearlite with better toughness and plasticity; (3) the pearlite is more stable compared with a retained austenite under repeated impact load and less phase transformation can take place; (4) high silicon content im- proves the morphology of eutectic carbide; (5) there is no seeondary carbide which results in less crack sources. All these factors are beneficial to improvement of impact fatigue spalling resistance. The eutectic carbide M7C3 is the main constituent to resist wear. 展开更多

The increase in payload capacity of trucks has heightened the demand for cost-effective yet high performance brake discs. In this work, the thermal fatigue and wear of compacted graphite iron brake discs were investigated, aiming to provide an experimental foundation for achieving a balance between their thermal and mechanical properties.Compacted graphite iron brake discs with different tensile strengths, macrohardnesses, specific heat capacities and thermal diffusion coefficients were produced by changing the proportion and strength of ferrite. The peak temperature, pressure load and friction coefficient of compacted graphite iron brake discs were analyzed through inertia friction tests. The morphology of thermal cracks and 3D profiles of the worn surfaces were also discussed. It is found that the thermal fatigue of compacted graphite iron discs is determined by their thermal properties.A compacted graphite iron with the highest specific heat capacity and thermal diffusion coefficient exhibits optimal thermal fatigue resistance.Oxidization of the matrix at low temperatures significantly weakens the function of alloy strengthening in hindering the propagation of thermal cracks.Despite the reduced hardness, increasing the ferrite proportion can mitigate wear loss resulting from low disc temperatures and the absence of abrasive wear. 展开更多

The effect of rare earth (Re) and titanium (Ti) multi-modification on the impact wear behavior of Mn-B high-Si bainitic cast steel was investigated systematically. The experiments show that the impact wear resistance can be improved greatly with the addition of Re and Ti. Its wear loss is only about 1/3-1/2 as large as that of the unmodified bainitic cast steel. By the Re/Ti modification, coarse dendrite grains and bainitic/martensite duplex structure have been refined effectively, and the impact toughness of the bainitic cast steel is nearly tripled (10 mm×10 mm×55 mm, with unnotched sample). Consequently, the modified bainitic cast steel possesses good wear resistance under high im- pact. For both modified and unmodified bainitic cast steels, high hardness white layer and deformed zone are developed beneath the worn surface under the high impact wear, but the formation and propagation of cracks are different for these bainitic casting steels. Different mod- els for the formation and propagation of cracks for both modified and unmodified bainitic cast steels under high impact wear are proposed. 展开更多

Tool wear has an important influence on the residual stress distribution on the machined surface. Also,it will influence the fatigue life of finished workpiece. In this research, the hard turning process of hardened die steel Cr12 MoV was studied by using PCBN tool with considering tool wear. Based on the numerical treatment of residual stress, the dispersion and distribution curves of different tool wear were fitted, and the influence mechanism of tool wear on the residual stress distribution of machined surface was analyzed.Based on the theory of fatigue mechanics and mathematical statistics, the mathematical model for difference of stress dispersion and fatigue life was established. The rotating and bending tests were carried out on the standard parts after cutting process for the workpiece. The influence of tool wear on fatigue life was revealed by fracture surface morphology and fatigue life study. The results provide theoretical support for control of residual stress and the fatigue property of the machined surface under the actual working conditions. 展开更多

The formation and growth of thermal fatigue crack and the function of RE and heat treatment in wear resistance of cast iron containing low alloy were investigated, and it was analyzed in view of the activation energy for the crack′s propagation. The results show that the thermal fatigue cracks are mainly generated at eutectic carbides, and the cracks are grown by themselves spreading and joining each other. RE can improve the eutectic carbide′s morphology, inhibit the generation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks, therefore, promote the activation energy for the crack′s propagation, and especially, which is more noticeable in case of the RE modification in combination with heat treatment. 展开更多

In this study, a newly developed duplex coating method incorporating plasma carburization and CrN coating was applied to Ti-6Al-4V and its effects on the wear resistance and fatigue life were investigated. The carburized layer with approximately150 μm in depth and CrN coating film with 7.5 μm in thickness were formed after duplex coating. Hard carbide particles such as TiC And V4C3 were formed in the carburized layer. XRD diffraction pattern analysis revealed that CrN film had predominant [111] and [200] textures. The hardness (Hv) was significantly improved up to about 1960 after duplex coating while the hardness value of original Ti-6Al-4V was 402. The threshold load for the modification and/or failure of CrN coating was measured to be 32N using the acoustic emission technique. The wear resistance and fatigue life of duplex coated Ti-6Al-4V improved significantly compared to those of un-treated specimen. The enhanced wear resistance can be attributed to the excellent adhesion and improved hardness of CrN coating film for the duplex coated Ti-6Al-4V. The initiation of fatigue cracks is likely to be retarded by the presence of hard and strong layers on the surface, resulting in the enhanced fatigue life. 展开更多

A simple impact-sliding wear test rig is designed for studying the wear behavior between solid materials on a repetitive normal impact accompanied with the tangential sliding. The test rig consists of a cantilever beam forced by the dynamoelectric vibration exciter and a rotational shaft driven by a spindle. It has a widely adjustable range of testing parameters, including the impact frequency, the impact load and the sliding velocity. The avail- able maximum impact frequency, impact load and sliding velocity are 100 Hz, 200 N and 4.52 m/s, respectively. To evaluate the capability of the test rig, tests are carried out and the impact load is measured. Results show that the test rig has the good repeatability under the same test conditions and the repeatable error is less than 7%. Furthermore, non-destructive examination results by the mass loss method, two-dimensional profilometry and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that the test rig can meet the demands for the impact-sliding wear. 展开更多

The formation and growth of thermal fatigue crack in chromium wear resistant cast iron was investigated, and the effect of hot deformation on the crack was analyzed by means of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope and high frequency induction thermal fatigue tester. The results show that eutectic carbide is the main location and passage for initiation and extension of thermal fatigue cracks, hot deformation can improve the eutectic carbiders morphology and distribution, inhibit the generation and propagation of thermal fatigue cracks. The effects of laser shock peening (LSP) on the impact wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were investigated by a homemade impact wear test rig. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the peened samples were studied. During the impact wear test, the energy absorption, impact force, wear contact time and wear mechanism of all the test samples were investigated in terms of the influence of the impact kinetic energy. The results showed that microhardness, elastic modulus and residual compressive stress of the treated samples were markedly improved. The wear resistances of both treated samples were highly improved after LSP, and a higher pulse energy corresponded to a more obvious effect. Besides, the wear in all test samples involved a combination of abrasive and oxidation wear and fatigue spalling. 展开更多

The impact fretting wear has largely occurred at nuclear power device induced by the flow-induced vibra- tion, and it will take potential hazards to the service of the equipment. However, the present study focuses on the tangential fretting wear of alloy 690 tubes. Research on impact fretting wear of alloy 690 tubes is limited and the related research is imminent. Therefore, impact fretting wear behavior of alloy 690 tubes against 304 stainless steels is investigated. Deionized water is used to simulate the flow environment of the equipment, and the dry envi- ronment is used for comparison. Varied analytical tech- niques are employed to characterize the wear and tribochemical behavior during impact fretting wear. Char- acterization results indicate that cracks occur at high impact load in both water and dry equipment; however, the water as a medium can significantly delay the cracking time. The crack propagation behavior shows a jagged shape in the water, but crack extended disorderly in dry equip- ment because the water changed the stress distribution and retarded the friction heat during the wear process. The SEM and XPS analysis shows that the main failure mechanisms of the tube under impact fretting are fatiguewear and friction oxidation. The effect of medium(water) on fretting wear is revealed, which plays a potential and promising role in the service of nuclear power device and other flow equipments. 展开更多

In this model, the damage evolution rate is described by two kinds of quantities. One is associated with the cyclic stress characteristics obtained by the finite element (FE) analysis, and the other is associated with the material fatigue property identified from the fatigue test data of standard specimens. The wear is modeled by the energy wear law to simulate the contact geometry evolution. A two-dimensional (2D) plane strain FE implementation of the damage mechanics model and the energy wear model is presented in the platform of ABAQUS to simulate the evolutions of the fatigue damage and the wear scar. The effect of the specimen thickness is also investigated. The predicted results of the crack initiation site and the fretting fatigue life agree well with available experimental data. Comparisons are made with the critical plane Smith- Watson-Topper (SWT) method. 展开更多

The dry impact wear behavior of bainite ductile cast iron was evaluated under three different impact loads for 30000 cycles. The strain-hardening effects beneath the contact surfaces were analyzed according to the surfaces' micro-hardness profiles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to observe the wom surfaces. The results indicated that the material with the highest hardness was the one continuously cooled at 20℃, which exhibited the lowest wear rate under each set of test conditions. The hardness of the worn surface and the thickness of the hardened layer increased with the increases in impact load and in the number of test cycles. The better wear performance of the sample cooled at 20℃ is attributed to its finer microstructure and superior mechanical properties. All the samples underwent the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) phenomenon after impact wear, as revealed by the fact that small amounts of retained austenite were detected by XRD. 展开更多

This study investigated the fretting wear and fatigue of full-scale railway axles.Fatigue tests were conducted on full-scale railway axles, and the fretting wear and fretting fatigue in the fretted zone of the railway axles were analysed.Three-dimensional finite element models were established based on the experimental results.Then,multi-axial fatigue parameters and a linear elastic fracture mechanics-based approach were used to investigate the fretting fatigue crack initiation and propagation, respectively,in which the role of the fretting wear was taken into account. The experimental and simulated results showed that the fretted zone could be divided into zones I-III according to the surface damage morphologies.Fretting wear alleviated the stress concentration near the wheel seat edge and resulted in a new stress concentration near the worn/unworn boundary in zone II,which greatly promoted the fretting crack initiation at the inner side of the fretted zone.Meanwhile, the stress concentration also increased the equivalent stress intensity factor range DKeq below the mating surface, and thus promoted the propagation of fretting fatigue crack.Based on these findings, the effect of the stress redistribution resulting from fretting wear is suggested to be taken into account when evaluating the fretting fatigue in railway axles. 展开更多

The fatigue behavior of high speed steel (HSS) roll materials for hot rolling was researched under watercooling conditions by laser impacting. The microstructure of HSS sample and the morphologies of fatigue samples were observed by scanning electron microscope. The phase structure was detected by XRD. The morphology of situ oxide scale was observed by optical microscope, and the expansion coefficient was measured by TGA. The experiment results indicate that the cracks come into being at the carbide-matrix interface, but there are no cracks in the matrix after many times of laser impacting treatment, for the situ sample taken from the fractured roll surface, big carbides are more sensitive to the fatigue, and peel off prior to small ones. The relevant fatigue mechanisms are also discussed. 展开更多

Damage tolerant methodology is increasingly used in aeronautical components, especially due the fact that the Aviation Regulation requires such an assessment in case an accidental damage occurs. At present, there is a strong and actual interest in applying such procedures to helicopter components that are subjected to high frequency cyclic loads. In this paper,an investigation on a damaged transmission shaft for a tail rotor transmission of an actual helicopter has been carried out focusing on the fatigue crack propagation.A complete sequence of experimental tests was performed in order to create an actual ballistic damage and to subsequently check the damage tolerant behaviour. The shaft was damaged by oblique ballistic impact and was subsequently subjected to torsional fatigue loading.During the fatigue cycles several cracks propagated from the ballistic damages. Both of these steps(impact and fatigue loading)were also simulated by a complex modelling approach based on Finite Element Models and fracture mechanics theory. The comparison between the experimental and numerical results shows a good agreement but it underlines the need for a very refined modelling technique capable to replicate all the features associated with the damage in order to reliably simulate the subsequent propagation phase. 展开更多
