Individual differences in English Learning Strategies

Some learners' personal factors, such as gender, major, motivation and language proficiency, influence the use of language learn- ing strategies. This paper reports the results of a survey study which investigates the individual differences and the employment of English learning strategies, examines the association between enjoyment and strategy use, motivation and strategy use, gender and strategy use, major and strategy use, English proficiency and strategy use.

Six-Dimensional Guidance: The Strategies of Thinking Quality Cultivation in Senior High School English Discourse Learning

Taking the discourse learning of the new senior high school English textbook published by the People’s Education Press as an example,combined with the“six-dimensional guidance”deep reading strategy,and through the six-skill training strategies of“memory skill training,understanding skill training,application skill training,analytical skill training,evaluation skill training,creative skill training,”this paper aims to cultivate students’thinking profundity,logic,flexibility,sensitivity,criticality,and originality.It also promotes the real implementation of senior high school English deep reading that points to the cultivation of thinking quality in classroom teaching,and realizes the transformation from“conventional reading”to“deep reading”that reflects the core literacy of the discipline.

A Study on the Sex Differences of Vocabulary Learning Strategies of College Non-English Majors

The paper deals with a study on the sex differences of vocabulary learning strategies employed by the college non-English majors through a questionnaire. The author found some significant differences between some strategies employed by these two groups of students, but there were no significant differences between most of them employed by both sexes. Thus some tentative suggestions to the college English teachers in the vocabulary teaching were provided.

On Affective Strategies use in College Students' Autonomous English Learning

Autonomous study emphasizes the learner's initiative,enthusiasm and creativity.In all fields of education,there is growing emphasis on "learner-centered" teaching methods and the ability of learner autonomy.Many experts and scholars have found that learning strategies plays an important role in English language learning,but the importance of affective strategy use in English learning is often ignored by people.Therefore,this paper focuses on the frequencies of affective strategies use in English learning and their relationships so as to enable college students to use positive affective strategies effectively to improve their autonomous learning ability.

English Learning Strategies Employed by EFL Postgraduate Students in Southwest China

English learning strategies play an important role in the language proficiency for EFL learners. Both frequency and patterns of English learning strategies use were found to be significantly related to language proficiency. The present investigation aimed to investigate a) an overall strategy use of postgraduate students in southwest China; and b) to examine the relationship as well as patterns of variations in frequency of students' reported strategy use with reference to their gender and field of study. The subjects of this study were 200 postgraduates in the universities of southwest China. A written questionnaire based on the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL) was adapted and biodata was added for background information. The findings of the research showed that the postgraduates, on the whole, reported medium frequency of use of English learning strategies. The results of the data analysis also demonstrated that frequency of postgraduates' reported use of English learning strategies varied significantly in terms of gender and field of study. The implications, limitations and recommendations for further research were also discussed.

An Investigation on Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Business English Majors

The vocabulary learning strategies are very common in English learning. Basing on O'Malley & Chamot's classification framework of vocabulary learning strategies, the present study conducts research by the questionnaires and interviews of junior Business English Majors to know the current real situation of business English vocabulary learning strategies used by business English Majors. After analyzing and discussing the problems which are reflected in the questionnaire and interview, the researcher puts forward some suggestions on vocabulary learning and teaching in Business English. The researcher hopes it is helpful for Business English Majors to learn Business English vocabulary.

A Critical Review on Language Learning Strategies and Implications for College English Teaching

This paper reviews the current developments of language learning strategy researches in the world, both approval and critical voices on the issue of strategy instruction. Then it summarizes the current developments of learning strategy instruction in China. It indicates college English teachers should model learning strategy and make the instruction explicit. Study on English Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Non-English Majors

This research investigated English learning strategy use by Non-English majors in Guangxi.Students’self-reports and questionnaires are conducted to collect data.The analysis finds that students have difficulty with long-term memory and internalization of words.The most frequently used strategies are some determination,memory and cognitive strategies.Social and metacognitive strategies are used less.The findings indicate that there are no great differences in the use of most strategies between groups of different proficient levels.Suggestions are provided to teachers based on the findings.

The Study of Language Learning Strategies of Non-English Majors

This paper, from the educational and psychological point of view, explores EFL college students＇ language learning strategies in the Chinese context. The subjects under study involve 106 non-English majors from Hohai University at its Changzhou Campus. The approach is used for the research through two questionnaires to investigate the learners＇ language learning strategies. In the study, it is found that students use compensation strategies most frequently, while metacognitive strategies less and social strategies the least. Findings of the present study also indicate that the different strategies are respectively emphasized for the male and female students, students of arts and science and engineering.

Civil Engineering Students'English Metacognitive Strategies,Autono-mous Learning Competence and ListeningPerformance

In order to improve Englishlistening more effectively, the application status of metacognitive strategies and autonomouslearning competence is exploredbased on a questionnaire investigation among 120 civil engineering major in BJUT. The methods of correlation analysis and an independent sample t-test are employed.The results indicated that 1) their metacognitivestrategies, and the planning, monitoring strategy have positive significant correlations with the students'listening performance and listening auton-omous learning competence;2) There are significant differences in the use of metacognitivestrategies,the level of autonomous learn-ing competence between different levels of listening performance;3) The more accuracy of self-judgment is, the higher level Eng-lish listening performance is.

Relationships Between Achievement Emotions, Motivation and Language Learning Strategies of High, Mid and Low English Language Achievers

Overseas research has shown that achievement emotions have direct relationships with ＂achievement outcome＂ and＂achievement activities＂. The purpose of the present study aimed to compare the relationships betweenachievement emotions, motivation, and language learning strategies of high, mid and low achievers in Englishlanguage learning at an international university in a southern province in China. Quantitative data were collectedthrough a questionnaire survey of 74 （16 males, 58 females） TESL major students. Results indicated that studentsin general experienced more positive than negative achievement emotions; more intrinsically rather thanextrinsically motivated to learn English; and quite frequently used a variety of learning strategies to overcome theirlearning difficulties. However, Year Four low-achievers experienced more negative achievement emotions. Theyseldom used metacognitive, affective and social learning strategies, and they had lower degrees of intrinsicmotivation. Implications for institutional support for at risk students are discussed.

Study on the Psychology of Students in English Learning and the Teaching Strategies

In the new period, the importance of English is becoming increasingly significant, and it has gradually developed to be the first international language. Learning English has been one of the important tasks necessary for students to complete.
