With the rise of feminism in the 20th century, many western critics have looked at Joyce from a feminist perspective.Their discussion is largely focused on the topics such as″Is Joyce a misogynist or sympathizer with women ?″and ″Are Joyce's female characters representation of stereotypical male chauvinism ?″Because they have approached from different angles and combined different theories in their studies, their views are actually not identical. As a result, their research work has uncovered new dimensions of Joyce. 展开更多

The thesis bases on James Joyce’s short story collection the Dubliners as the main text, supplemented by other works, and from a poetic perspective, focuses on the relationship between Joyce’s exile life and his nostalgia.Nostalgia is widespread, but its mental activity is not simple.Joyce wanders overseas, but his nostalgia is not directly expressed, and even shows his disgust with Ireland. The poetic interpretation of this contradictory phenomenon can help us understand Joyce’s personal ideas, literary thoughts, and feelings of home and country. And then,it may help us understand why exiled writers often have complex and contradictory feelings about their homeland. 展开更多

The TCM practitioners originally worked in a legal gray-zone, sometimes even being treated as illegal practitioners by the local governments, since TCM licensing laws did not exist until late 1973[1]. The first legal acupuncture clinic was established in Washington, D.C. in 1972[2], but Nevada was the first state that passed a full practicing law for acupuncture and TCM[3]. Under- standing the legal history of acupuncture in the U.S. will help us to see the road ahead more clearly. 展开更多

Joyce Carol Oates, one of America's most prestigious and prolific contemporary writers, favors depicting the dark side of America, especially poverty and violence. This paper studies Oates' s depiction of abject poverty, of those most powerless and vulnerable and those who cannot attain the food, water, and shelter necessary for survival during the Great Depression. Then, relative poverty after the Depression is also discussed. Oates keenly observes "the invisible poor" in the affluent American society and gives voice to those relatively deprived and marginal. By analyzing the relationship between poverty and violence, this paper concludes that Oates tries to awaken readers to the social malaise and the real life of the downtrodden and at the same time calls for passion and life's energy. The obsession with the darkest sides of the society is not a sick fondness but reflects the social conscience of Oates as a serious writer. 展开更多

"Lux in Tenebris":The Symbolic Use of Color Red in Dubliners

Dubliners is known to be characterized with permeating darkness and a lack of light, which serves as a sign for religious, political, cultural and spiritual darkness that shrouds the city as well as psychological predicaments that trap, frustrate and paralyze Dublin citizens.Yet despite the dimmed, somber natural environment where plots unfold, the texts are sprinkled with vivid use of colors, whose symbolic significance remains understudied. The color red is used in Dubliners to symbolize life and hope.Though in general characters have ghoulishly colored skin, their faces are always smeared with a shade of red, just like the invading darkness in Dubliners is always dotted with a few spots of red light, which conveys the message that Dublin is not solely characterized by a state of paralysis or death-in-life,but also by a ray of hope and national revival. Therefore, overemphasis on the motif of darkness and paralysis does not do justice to Joyce’s underlying expectation for his people to break free from the shackles of religious and political oppression and finally achieve national independence. 展开更多

Focusing on parody, this paper tries to explore“Joycing”parody and mainly investigates its usage in Ulysses’s seventeenth chapter,‘Ithaca’.Linda Hutcheon indicates that parody is one of the techniques for writers to“trans-contextualize”the past and then go off with their own ideological ends.[8]Joyce writes beyond the past and creates his own model of writing in the literature by employing the technique of parody tactfully. 展开更多
