Impacts of COVID-19 on tourism and management response from Banff National Park,Canada

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to the tourism sector globally.We investigated changes in visitor demographics,satisfaction level,and its determinants pre-and peri-COVID-19.Data were collected using questionnaire surveys in 2019 and 2021 within Banff National Park(BNP).The data analyses were based on a sample size of 1183 respondents by conducting factor analysis,correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis.Results highlight that there were fewer international visitors and more local and domestic visitors during the pandemic.Park attributes were evaluated at a higher satisfaction level peri-COVID-19.The quality of the Park facilities and services were the most important satisfaction determinants pre-and peri-COVID-19,and all the Park COVID-19 measures and actions received positive experience from visitors.This research fills this knowledge gap by developing a better understanding in the change of visitor demographics and satisfaction level in BNP under the context of the pandemic.It also provides implication for both scholars and practitioners to understand the impacts of the pandemic on Park visitation.The study can provide insights for utilizing the pandemic as a transformative strength and for mitigating its negative impact on tourism industry. 展开更多

Along the Czech-German border there are four national parks,two Czech and two German,arranged in cross-border‘pairs’.This article focuses on the southern‘pair’formed by the parks of?umava and Bayerischer Wald(Bavarian Forest).The aim is to evaluate and compare tourism organization in their areas,taking into account selected aspects of management:the network of hiking trails with its related infrastructure,transport accessibility,a typology of tourist centers,as well as directions and destinations of tourist movements.Based on the results,it can be concluded that the availability of geographical space for tourists is much greater in the German than in the Czech national park,and the tourism infrastructure is clearly more extensive there,including the network of tourist trails.This is mainly due to the longer and fairly uninterrupted development of tourism in this area.?umava National Park can be identified as a model in terms of how to adjust the directions of tourist movements and the layout of the tourist trail network to the needs of natural environment.On the basis of observations in both national parks,it is possible to indicate various solutions that,after appropriate adaptation,may bring benefits to other protected areas. 展开更多

Mountain areas are often rich in ecological diversity and recreational opportunities. Mountain tourism is thought to be an effective and important means for maintaining and expanding rural economies and, thus, improving the living conditions of rural societies. As mountain tourism service research is a professional field with several disciplines involved, a multi-disciplinary management platform is needed and it facilitates participation in sustainable mountain development by diverse stakeholders. With the source regions of the Yangtze and the Yellow River as a case study, this paper presents a conceptual framework for an adaptation management of mountain tourism services according to technical, policy, social and economic dimensions. The framework is based on a vulnerability assessment of mountain ecosystems, and can serve as a reference for the development of tourism service in other mountain areas. 展开更多

Therefore, we can state that it is ... Tourist destination and, generally, tourist activities not only represent an extraordinarily important economic factor, but also an instrument of knowledge and personal empowerment. Therefore, we can state that it is essential to ensure access to the tourism experience to all citizens, regardless of personal, social, economic conditions and any other nature which may limit the fruition of this asset. The role of tourism management is to develop effective strategic plan in order to guarantee a possible growth of a destination, without having a negative impact on the resources, either natural or civilian of the destination itself. Tourist destinations follow a life-cycle (evolution cycle) based on a price factor (a greater attractiveness of an area means a greater willingness to pay of the tourists) and a trend factor (related to the fame of the area and to the evolution of tourists’ tastes and habits). These factors mark the tourism in the contents and in the methods of production and consumption, related to the concepts of supply and demand, two dimensions that must be always connected with the principles of growth, accessibility and sustainability. This research paper aims to deepen the life-cycle approach of a tourist destination, underlining the option that the tourism management could offer to relaunch an area, however considering the principle of supportable growing. 展开更多

Besides being known as the birthplace of fries and waffles,Brussels is also referred to as a superlative Art Nouveau Capital.However,it appears that many of its visitors are unfamiliar with this city’s architectural style which is spread throughout the Capital Region.Due to both the specific opportunities and barriers of the Brussels context,an improved valorisation was explored through a themed landscape approach.This innovative tourism approach can enhance both the management and experience of the Art Nouveau patrimony as an entity.Applying a survey and interviews,this research examined the views of two relevant stakeholder groups:policymakers and tourism managers,and visitors.Two main research questions were addressed:whether these groups could identify the Brussels Art Nouveau as a themed landscape;and,in which way a themed landscape approach can overcome fragmented management and weak experience.Confronting both groups revealed interesting discrepancies as hidden hurdles for tourism destination management. 展开更多

Surf tourism is an increasingly popular niche in tourism that sparks economic development in many coastal regions around the world.Surfers make use of surf breaks which can be considered natural resources that thus experience issues of carrying capacity.Although no formal management system is in place(and desired),surfers utilize informal management systems such as localism and surf etiquette in an attempt to tune behaviors.A multi-method approach is used to explore surf tourism and its effect on the local population of Nouvelle-Aquitaine,an area in which surf tourism is highly popular but little researched.Results indicate that crowding issues are widespread.Local surfers see their surfing experience and enjoyment affected,especially during high season,although the importance of surf tourism for the local economy is also understood.Education with regards to surf etiquette,but also regarding communication and mutual respect,can improve the situation,which is necessary as surfing is only expected to grow further in the future. 展开更多

Due to diverse tourism information sources and scattered data services, the real-time and effectiveness of tourism information service is insufficient, and the “information island” is numerous. In order to integrate and share information resources effectively, and achieve the intelligentialized and real-time all-for-one tourism information services, this paper proposes a systematic framework of allfor- one tourism information system, where tourists and tourist destinations are considered as all-for-one tourism digital ecosystem. The whole mode of this framework was combined with four levels and two parts. Some advanced information technologies such as big data, cloud computing and mobile internet application development were utilized to construct tourism digital ecosystem.
