This paper reports a numerical investigation to address the responses of jointed rock masses subjected to impact loading. It also focuses on the static and dynamic properties of an intact rock derived from a series of laboratory tests on meta-sandstone samples from a quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada. A distinct element code(PFC2D) was used to generate a bonded particle model(BPM) to simulate both the static and dynamic properties of the intact rock. The calibrated BPM was then used to construct large-scale jointed rock mass samples by incorporating discrete joint networks of multiple joint intensities into the intact rock matrix represented by the BPM. Finally, the impact-induced damage inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples was determined through the use of the numerical model. The simulation results show that joints play an important role in the impactinduced rock mass damage where higher joint intensity results in more damage to the rock mass. This is mainly attributed to variations of stress wave propagation in jointed rock masses as compared to intact rock devoid of joints.展开更多

Simultaneously with deriving the orthotropic anisotropy elastic parameters along the positive axis, the equivalent compliance matrix for the deflection axis orthotropic anisotropy was derived through a three- dimensional coordinate transformation. In addition, Singh's analysis of the stress concentration effects of intermittent joints was adopted, based on two groups of intermittent joints and a set of cross- cutting joints in the jointed rock mass. The stress concentration effects caused by intermittent joints and the coupling effect of cross-cutting joints along the deflection-axis are also considered. The proposed anisotropic mechanics parameters method is applied to determine the deformation parameters of jointed granite at the Taishan Nuclear Power Station. Combined with the deterministic mechanical parameters of rock blocks and joints, the deformation parameters and their variability in jointed rock masses are estimated quantitatively. The computed results show that jointed granite at the Taishan Nuclear Power Station exhibits typical anisotropic mechanical characteristics; the elastic moduli in the two horizontal directions were similar, but the elastic modulus in the vertical direction was much greater. Jointed rock elastic moduli in the two horizontal and vertical directions were respectively about 24% and 37% of the core of rock, showing weakly orthotropic anisotropy; the ratio of elastic moduli in the vertical and horizontal directions was 1.53, clearly indicating the transversely isotropic rock mass mechanical characteristics. The method can be popularized to solve other rock mechanics problems in nuclear power engineering.展开更多

Based on the experimental results of intact Brazilian disc of rock-like material, a set of micro-parameters in PFC2D that reflected the macro-mechanical behavior of rock-like materials were obtained. And then PFC2D was used to simulate Brazilian splitting test for jointed rock mass specimens and specimen containing a central straight notch. The effect of joint angle and notch angle on the tensile strength and failure mode of jointed rock specimens was detailed analyzed. In order to reveal the meso-mechanical mechanism of crack coalescence, displacement trend lines were applied to analyze the displacement evolution during the crack initiation and propagation. The investigated conclusions can be described as follows. (1) The tensile strength of jointed rock mass disc specimen is dependent to the joint angle. As the joint angle increases, the tensile strength of jointed rock specimen takes on a nonlinear variance. (2) The tensile strength of jointed rock mass disc specimen containing a central straight notch distributes as a function of both joint angle and notch angle. (3) Three major failure modes, i.e., pure tensile failure, shear failure and mixed tension and shear failure mode are observed in jointed rock mass disc specimens under Brazilian test. (4) The notch angle roles on crack initiation and and joint angle play important propagation characteristics of jointed rock mass disc specimen containing a central straight notch under Brazilian test.展开更多

To reflect the microstructure of jointed rock masses, a representative element volume (REV) is selected. Assuming being rigid and perfectly plastic and utilizing the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion for rock and joints, an upper bound limit analysis method is proposed based on the homogenization theory. By using the finite element method and Goodman joint element, a nonlinear mathematical programming with equality constraints is formulated, which can be solved by a direct iterative algorithm. Numerical results show the strength of jointed rock masses behaves anisotropy with different joint directions. 文摘The deformation modulus of a rock mass is an important parameter to describe its mechanical behavior. In this study,an analytical method is developed to determine the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses, which considers the mechanical properties of intact rocks and joints based on the superposition principle.Due to incorporating the variations in the orientations and sizes of joint sets, the proposed method is applicable to the rock mass with persistent and parallel joints as well as that with nonpersistent and nonparallel joints. In addition,an anisotropy index AIdmfor the deformation modulus is defined to quantitatively describe the anisotropy of rock masses. The range of AIdmis from 0 to 1,and the more anisotropic the rock mass is,the larger the value of AIdmwill be.To evaluate the proposed method,20 groups of numerical experiments are conducted with the universal distinct element code(UDEC).For each experimental group, the deformation modulus in 24 directions are obtained by UDEC(numerical value)and the proposed method(predicted value),and then the mean error rates are calculated.Note that the mean error rate is the mean value of the error rates of the deformation modulus in 24 directions, where for each direction, the error rate is equal to the ratio of numerical value minus predicted value to the numerical value. The results show that(i)for different experimental groups, the mean error rates vary between 5.06%and 22.03%;(ii)the error rates for the discrete fracture networks(DFNs)with two sets of joints are at the same level as those with one set of joints;and(iii)therefore, the proposed method for estimating the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses is valid.

文摘The strength of jointed rock mass is strongly controlled by the degree of interlock between its constituent rock blocks. The degree of interlock constrains the kinematic freedom of individual rock blocks to rotate and slide along the block forming joints. The HoekeBrown(HB)failure criterion and the geological strength index(GSI)were developed based on experiences from mine slopes and tunneling projects in moderately to poorly interlocked jointed rock masses. It has since then been demonstrated that the approach to estimate the HB strength parameters based on the GSI strength scaling equations(called the‘GSI strength equations’)tends to underestimate the confined peak strength of highly interlocked jointed rock masses(i.e.GSI>65),where the rock mass is often non-persistently jointed, and the intact rock blocks are strong and brittle. The estimation of the confined strength of such rock masses is relevant when designing mine pillars and abutments at great depths, where the confining pressure is high enough to prevent block rotation and free sliding on block boundaries. In this article,a grain-based distinct element modeling approach is used to simulate jointed rock masses of various degrees of interlock and to investigate the influences of block shape, joint persistence and joint surface condition on the confined peak strengths. The focus is on non-persistently jointed and blocky(persistently jointed)rock masses, consisting of hard and homogeneous rock blocks devoid of any strength degrading defects such as veins. The results from this investigation confirm that the GSI strength equations underestimate the confined strength of highly interlocked and non-persistently jointed rock masses. Moreover, the GSI strength equations are found to be valid to estimate the confined strength of persistently jointed rock masses with smooth and non-dilatant joint surfaces.

文摘A discrete element method (DEM) called particle flow code (PFC2D) was used to construct a model for Brazilian disc splitting test in the present study. (4) The notch angle roles on crack initiation and and joint angle play important propagation characteristics of jointed rock mass disc specimen containing a central straight notch under Brazilian test.
文摘The geological strength index(GSI) system, widely used for the design and practice of mining process,is a unique rock mass classification system related to the rock mass strength and deformation parameters based on the generalized Hoek-Brown and Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. The GSI can be estimated using standard chart and field observations of rock mass blockiness and discontinuity surface conditions. The GSI value gives a numerical representation of the overall geotechnical quality of the rock mass.In this study,we propose a method to determine the GSI quantitatively using photographic images of in situ jointed rock mass with image processing technology, fractal theory and artificial neural network(ANN).We employ the GSI system to characterize the jointed rock mass around the working in a coal mine. The relative error between the proposed value and the given value in the GSI chart is less than 3.6%.
文摘Although many intact rock types can be very strong,a critical confining pressure can eventually be reached in triaxial testing, such that the Mohr shear strength envelope becomes horizontal. This critical state has recently been better defined, and correct curvature or correct deviation from linear Mohr-Coulomb(MC) has finally been found.Standard shear testing procedures for rock joints, using multiple testing of the same sample,in case of insufficient samples, can be shown to exaggerate apparent cohesion.Even rough joints do not have any cohesion, but instead have very high friction angles at low stress, due to strong dilation.Rock masses, implying problems of large-scale interaction with engineering structures, may have both cohesive and frictional strength components. However,it is not correct to add these, following linear M-C or nonlinear Hoek-Brown(H-B) standard routines.Cohesion is broken at small strain, while friction is mobilized at larger strain and remains to the end of the shear deformation. The criterion 'c then σn tan φ' should replace 'c plus σn tan φ' for improved fit to reality.Transformation of principal stresses to a shear plane seems to ignore mobilized dilation, and caused great experimental difficulties until understood. There seems to be plenty of room for continued research,so that errors of judgement of the last 50 years can be corrected.

文摘To efficiently link the continuum mechanics for rocks with the structural statistics of rock masses,a theoretical and methodological system called the statistical mechanics of rock masses(SMRM)was developed in the past three decades. In SMRM,equivalent continuum models of stressestrain relationship, strength and failure probability for jointed rock masses were established, which were based on the geometric probability models characterising the rock mass structure. This follows the statistical physics, the continuum mechanics, the fracture mechanics and the weakest link hypothesis.A general constitutive model and complete stressestrain models under compressive and shear conditions were also developed as the derivatives of the SMRM theory. An SMRM calculation system was then developed to provide fast and precise solutions for parameter estimations of rock masses, such as full-direction rock quality designation(RQD),elastic modulus,Coulomb compressive strength, rock mass quality rating, and Poisson’s ratio and shear strength. The constitutive equations involved in SMRM were integrated into a FLAC3D based numerical module to apply for engineering rock masses. It is also capable of analysing the complete deformation of rock masses and active reinforcement of engineering rock masses.Examples of engineering applications of SMRM were presented, including a rock mass at QBT hydropower station in northwestern China,a dam slope of Zongo II hydropower station in D.R.Congo,an open-pit mine in Dexing,China,an underground powerhouse of Jinping I hydropower station in southwestern China, and a typical circular tunnel in Lanzhou-Chongqing railway,China. These applications verified the reliability of the SMRM and demonstrated its applicability to broad engineering issues associated with jointed rock masses.

文摘The saturation of the compacted bentonite buffer in the deep geological repository can cause bentonite swelling, intrusion into rock fractures, and erosion.Inevitably, erosion and subsequent bentonite mass loss due to groundwater inflow can aggravate the overall integrity of the engineered barrier system. Therefore, the coupled hydro-mechanical interaction between the buffer and rock during groundwater inflow and bentonite intrusion should be evaluated to guarantee the long-term safety of deep geological disposal. This study investigated the effect of bentonite erosion and intrusion on the elastic wave propagation characteristics in jointed rocks using a quasi-static resonant column test.Jointed rock specimens with different joint conditions(i.e.joint surface saturation and bentonite filling)were prepared using granite rock discs sampled from the Korea Underground Research Tunnel(KURT)and Gyeongju bentonite. The long-wavelength longitudinal and shear wave velocities were measured under different normal stress levels.A Hertzian-type power model was used to fit the wave velocities, and the relationship between the two fitted parameters provided the trend of joint conditions.Numerical simulations using three-dimensional distinct element code(3DEC)were conducted to better understand how the long-wavelength wave propagates through wet bentonite-filled rock joints.

文摘The existence of joints in the surrounding rock mass has a considerable efect on tunnel rockbursts.Herein,we studied the efect of layered joints with diferent inclination angles and spacings on rockburst in deep tunnels and investigated the failure area, deformation process of the surrounding rock mass, stress change inside the surrounding rock mass, velocity of the failed rock, and the kinetic energy of the failure. The failure type of the surrounding rock mass can thus be determined. The results showed that the intensity of rockburst increases as rock quality designation(RQD)decreases, while the deformation rate of the surrounding rock mass frst increases and then decreases. The deformation rate exhibits a turning point between RQD=50 and 70,below which the deformation rate of the surrounding rock mass gradually decreases, ultimately ceasing to be a rockburst.Rockburst always occurs perpendicular to the direction of the joint.Whenσ_(x)=σ_(y),as the joint inclination angle changes from 45°to 90°,the intensity of a rockburst frst decreases(from 45°to 60°),and then increases(from 60°to 90°).When combined with the evolution law of stress and strain energy, the rockburst process can be divided into four stages.

文摘According to different geological conditions and engineering disturbance, three dimensional numerical models of anchored jointed rock mass with two kinds of boundary conditions of constant normal load(CNL)and constant normal stiffness(CNS)were constructed considering the ductility damage of rockbolt, the stiffness degradation of grouting layer and the joint surface roughness. The effects of anchorage angle, joint surface morphology, and boundary conditions on the shear performance of anchorage system were analyzed, and the failure characteristics under different working conditions were revealed. Finally, the analytical solution of shear strength of anchored system was established. Results show that the larger the anchorage angle is,the more serious the necking phenomenon of rockbolt will be.The damage degree of the bonding layer and the horizontal displacement of the bedding rock mass decrease with the increase of the joint surface roughness. The CNL condition is to instantaneously apply high normal stress, and the CNS condition is to gradually form a high normal stress environment through the superposition of increment on the basis of the initial value, which can resist greater transverse load. This is equivalent to enhancing the ductility of the rockbolt. The shear strength of the system increases with the increase of normal stress and normal stiffness.Ignoring the normal stiffness will underestimate the shear strength.

文摘Geometrical parameters of discontinuities, such as spacing, length, dip and fault throw between joints have a great influence on the mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses.Accurate characterization for discontinuities is important for investigate the stability of rock masses. In this paper, the PFC2D is combined with joint network generation method to examine the mechanical behaviors of jointed mass.Taking Miaogou Open-pit Mine as an example, the information and statistical distributions of discontinuities of the slope rock masses are measured by ShapeMetriX3D measuring tool. Then, the automatic generation algorithm of random joints network based on the Monte-Carlo method is proposed using the programming language(FISH)embedded within PFC2D.This algorithm could represent the discontinuities compared with the geological surveys. In simulating the compression test of a jointed rock sample, the mechanical behavior and crack propagation were investigated. The results reveal that the failure mode and crack propagation of the jointed rock are dominated by the distribution of joints in addition to the intact rock properties. The simulation result shows the feasibility of the joints generating method in application to jointed rock mass.

文摘This paper aims to determine the strength properties of jointed rock masses by means of the homogenization method. This method presents an effective tool for the strength analysis of jointed rock masses.
文摘Rock blasting is a dynamic process accom panied with the propagations of shock waves and the dispersion of the explosion gas. This paper adopts the discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA)method to simulate the rock blasting process.A dynamic parameter adjustment and the non-reflecting boundary condition are implemented in the DDA method. The sub-block DDA method to simulate fracture problems is used. The blasting process in jointed rock mass is simulated by application of the explosion gas pressure on the expanding borehole walls and induced connected fracture surfaces around the boreholes. The blast craters with different overburdens are derived. The whole process including the explosion gas dispersion, borehole expansion, rock mass failure and cast, and the formation of the final blasting piles in rock blasting are well reproduced numerically.Parametric study for different overburdens is carried out,and the results are analyzed and discussed.

文摘Structure plane is one of the important factors affecting the stability and failure mode of rock mass engineering.Rock mass structure characterization is the basic work of rock mechanics research and the important content of numerical simulation.A new 3-dimensional rough discrete fracture network(RDFN3D)model and its modeling method based on the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot(W-M)function were presented in this paper. The RDFN3D model, which improves and unifies the modelling methods for the complex structural planes, has been realized. The influence of fractal dimension, amplitude, and surface precision on the modeling parameters of RDFN3D was discussed. The reasonable W-M parameters suitable for the roughness coefficient of JRC were proposed, and the relationship between the mathematical model and the joint characterization was established. The RDFN3D together with the smooth 3-dimensional discrete fracture network(DFN3D)models were successfully exported to the drawing exchange format, which will provide a wide application in numerous numerical simulation codes including both the continuous and discontinuous methods. The numerical models were discussed using the COMSOL Multiphysics code and the 3-dimensional particle flow code, respectively. The reliability of the RDFN3D model was preliminarily discussed and analyzed. The roughness and spatial connectivity of the fracture networks have a dominant effect on the fluid flow patterns. The research results can provide a new geological model and analysis model for numerical simulation and engineering analysis of jointed rock mass.
