Chemical substances present in discharge water generated by laundry industry:Analytical monitoring

To our knowledge,precise data concerning the pollution in terms of qualitative and quantitative fluctuations in discharge water from the laundry sector have seldom been reported.This study investigated the chemical composition of the discharge water from a laundry industry.Over 160 chemical substances and 15 standard water parameters were monitored.The results showed that the discharge water presented both inorganic and organic polycontamination with a high degree of qualitative and quantitative variability.However,of all monitored substances,only five metals(Al,Cu,Fe,Sr,and Zn),five minerals(P,Ca,K,Na,and S),and alkylphenols were systematically present and quantifiable.For a daily average water flow of 129 m^(3),the released metal flux was 356 g/d.Substances,such as trichloromethane,brominated diphenyl ether(BDE)47,and fluorides,were occasionally found and quantified.Other substances,such as chlorophenols,organo-tins,and pesticides were never identified.All the samples had quantifiable levels in the chemical oxygen demand(COD),biological oxygen demand(BOD),and hydrocarbons.Only the concentrations of Zn(8.3 g/d),Cu(21.4 g/d),and BOD(57.4 g/d)were close to or above the regulatory values:74.0 g/d for Zn,9.0 g/d for Cu,and 57.0 kg/d for BOD.The data obtained from this study are useful to the choice of additional treatments for the reduction of pollutant fluxes.

Study on the Antibacterial and Deodorization Effect of 4,4-Dichloro-2-Hydroxydiphenyl Ether in Laundry Gel Beads

In the formulation development of laundry gel beads,4,4-dichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether(HP-100)was used as a bacteriostatic agent,and the effect of HP-100 dosage on the bacteriostatic rate of laundry gel bead samples with different formulation systems was examined by the suspension quantification method;the long-lasting bacteriostatic performance of laundry gel bead samples added with HP-100 was investigated by the absorption method for evaluating the antimicrobial performance of textiles;the effect of HP-100 on the odor control of laundry gel bead samples was investigated by filling out surveys and questionnaires using the actual measurement method.Questionnaire was used to investigate the effect of HP-100 on odor control.The test results showed that the antibacterial rate of the two laundry gel samples against S.aureus increased with the increase of HP-100 dosage,and the antibacterial rate of Formula 1 reached 99.9%when the dosage of HP-100 was 0.3%;the antibacterial rate of cotton cloth washed with the laundry gel sample of Formula 1+0.3%HP-100 was more than 50%after 24 h,and still had the antibacterial effect;the antibacterial rate of cotton cloth washed with the sample of laundry gel with HP-100 was more than 50%after 24 h,and still had the antibacterial effect;the antibacterial effect of the sample with HP-100 was more than 50%after 24 h,and still had the antibacterial effect.The fabrics washed with HP-100 added laundry gel beads had better odor control than those treated with laundry gel beads without HP-100,and the addition of HP-100 to laundry gel beads could have antibacterial and deodorizing effects.

Testing of the Adhesion of Herpes Simplex Virus on Textile Substrates and Its Inactivation by Household Laundry Processes

Viral infections like Herpes simplex increasingly pose a serious threat to European health care systems and welfare of the population. Indirect transmission routes of infections via inanimate surfaces are often underestimated. In this study, we investigated the adhesion and persistence of Herpes simplex virus on cotton fabrics as well as its inactivation by domestic laundry. Virus adhesion to textile fibers was distinct, because viral DNA was detectable on fabrics for at least 48 hours after contamination as well as after home laundry. Particles remained infectious for several hours at room temperature and partially for 48 hours at 2℃ - 8℃. Nevertheless, domestic laundry was able to inactivate virus particles given that detergents were adequately used. This confirmed that standard household laundry processes, as established in Europe, are a suitable tool to reduce infectious Herpes virus particles from textiles, thereby supporting the prevention of infections circulating in the household and community.

<i>Arthrobacter arilaitensis</i>Re117 as a Source of Solvent-Stable Proteases: Production, Characteristics, Potential Application in the Deproteinization of Shrimp Wastes and Evaluation in Liquid Laundry Commercial Detergents

The present study describes the characterization of crude protease extract from Arthrobacter arilaitensis Re117 and its evaluation in solid and liquid detergent. One caseinolytic protease clear band was observed in zymogram. The crude alkaline protease showed optimum activity at pH 9.0 and 50&degC, and it was highly stable over a wide range of pH from 8.0 to 9.0. Proteolytic enzymes showed extreme stability towards non-ionic surfactants (Tween 80, Tween 20 and Triton X-100) and stimulate activity towards oxidizing agents such as sodium perborate. They also showed high stability and compatibility with various laundry solid detergents from Tunisian market. The protease of A. arilaitensis Re117, was also tested for shrimp waste deproteinization to produce chitin. The protein removal with a ratio E/S of 20 was about 83%. The novelties of the Re117 protease include its high stability to organic solvents and surfactants. These unique properties make it an ideal choice for application in detergent formulations and enzymatic peptide synthesis. In addition, the enzyme may find potential applications in the deproteinization of shrimp wastes to produce chitin.

Resistance of Commercial Bed Covers against Faecal Pellets of House Dust Mites:Behaviour of Seams and Zippers

This study evaluated the allergen impermeability against airborne allergens of dust mite droppings through all parts of commercial bed covers, including surface seams and zippers. Specimens were taken from places with and without seams and zipper. A novel penetration cell was developed to expose the specimens to an inoculum of purified mite droppings that was assessed for its allergen content Der p1 prior to the penetration tests. Using covers of different construction and material, the penetration level increased significantly in the presence of seams and zippers and could reach up to 6% depending on the seam’s/zipper’s characteristics and quality. Therefore, zippers and seams have to be considered as access points for the penetration of mite droppings. As for the penetration of airborne mite particles through the zipper, the penetration level was greatly attenuated by the presence of a cover strip. Depending on the respective quality and the construction type, the mite allergen Der p1 penetrated most likely through the zipper and seams of the specimens, already after a single laundry cycle. Hence, laundry may compromise the barrier performance and proves to be an important quality feature. In all samples, the textile surface showed sufficient allergen impermeability. Our conclusions provide recommendations to both manufacturers and users.

Tailoring particle shape for enhancing the homogeneity of powder mixtures:Experimental study and DEM modelling

The effect of particle shape modification on the segregation reduction of enzyme granules in laundry detergent powder mixtures was investigated,both experimentally and computationally using Deseret Element Method(DEM).The shape of modified enzyme particles was in such a way that the large and dense enzyme particles were layered by other fine particles in the detergent powder,by means of a process known in the literature as“seeded granulation”.It is found that the homogeneity of modified enzyme particles could be improved significantly comparing to the original spherical enzyme particles in powder mixtures.Overall,the results of this research demonstrated that the segregation-induced properties of the dense/spherical enzyme particles could be lowered by altering their shape,which could enable the enzyme particles to behave almost similar to other ingredients during the pile formation process.

Tung Pok Chin： A Paper Son Poet in New York

Classical-style poetry is a neglected genre in the study of Chinese American literature. Except for the Angel Island Poetry and the Songs of Gold Mountain （Jinshan geji 金山歌集）, no substantial research has been done on the enormous amount of classical-style poems published in San Francisco and New York. This article attempts to explore this uncharted territory by examining the poetry of Tung Pok Chin 陈松柏 （1916-88, aka Lai Bing Chan 黎屏尘） and his story as a Chinese immigrant. Chin moved to the United States in 1934 as a paper son. He joined the American navy during World War II and eventually established his own laundry business in Brooklyn. Since the late 1940s, Chin published a significant amount of his classical-style poetry in the China Daily News （Meizhou huaqiao ribao 美洲华侨日报）, a left-wing newspaper operated by the pro-communist Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance. With the help of his daughter, he also wrote a memoir in English narrating his assimilation into American society. His poetry, though not particularly refined, similarly records his experiences and comments regarding American life and politics. Based on the source materials found in the Tung Pok Chin Papers archived in New York University, his memoir, and the poems he published in the China Daily News, herein I illuminate how Chin adopted a traditional form of poetry as his expressive vehicle and, with the narrative power of his English memoir, how he used his poems to construct a social identity. The article also relates Chin＇s work to the broader context of Asian American studies, as well as the classical poetry community and its development in New York, and ponders his significances in the history of Chinese American literature.
