Politeness is the badge of human civilization,and a significant criterion to human society activity; politeness,as a social phenomenon,is the imperative tool and method to maintain human relation in perfect harmony; politeness is a kind of social conventions,it lays certain restraints on all the social members. From ancient to modern times,either in East or West,people always attach great importance to politeness. To save face of the speaker or the hearer,politeness is of considerable practical significance in the conversation. As a matter of fact,its value can never be underestimated. However,due to different historical,lingual and cultural backgrounds,different societies may have different criteria to politeness. And this leads to some problems such as misunderstandings and embarrassments in cross-cultural or intercultural communication. In order to solve these problems,many scholars and linguists at home and abroad have proposed different principles of politeness so far. The author aims to make a comparative study on politeness principles between Chinese and English language and cultures. Deep learning accelerators(DLAs)have been proved to be efficient computational devices for processing deep learning algorithms.Various DLA architectures are proposed and applied to different applications and tasks.However,for most DLAs,their programming interfaces are either difficult to use or not efficient enough.Most DLAs require programmers to directly write instructions,which is time-consuming and error-prone.Another prevailing programming interface for DLAs is high-performance libraries and deep learning frameworks,which are easy to be used and very friendly to users,but their high abstraction level limits their control capacity over the hardware resources thus compromises the efficiency of the accelerator.A design of the programming interface is for DLAs.First various existing DLAs and their programming methods are analyzed and a methodology for designing programming interface for DLAs is proposed,which is a high-level assembly language(called DLA-AL),assembler and runtime for DLAs.DLA-AL is composed of a low-level assembly language and a set of high-level blocks.It allows experienced experts to fully exploit the potential of DLAs and achieve near-optimal performance.Meanwhile,by using DLA-AL,end-users who have little knowledge of the hardware are able to develop deep learning algorithms on DLAs spending minimal programming efforts. 展开更多

AIM To investigate the effect of different neonatal risk factors on different language parameters as well as cognitive abilities among Arabic speaking Egyptian children at the age of two to three years of life and to find out which risk factor(s) had the greatest impact on language and cognitive abilities.METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 103 children with age range of 2-3 years(median age 31 mo).They were 62 males and 41 females who were exposed to different high-risk factors in the perinatal period,with exclusion of metabolic disorders,sepsis/meningitis,congenital anomalies and chromosomal aberrations.The studied children were subjected to a protocol of language assessment that included history taking,clinical and neurological examination,audiological evaluation,assessment of language using modified preschool language scale-4,IQ and mental age assessment and assessment of social age.RESULTS The studied children had a median gestational age of 37 wk,median birth weight of 2.5 kg.The distribution of the high-risk factors in the affected children were prematurity in 25 children,respiratory distress syndromein 25 children,hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in 15 children,hyperbilirubinemia in 10 children,hypoglycemia in 13 children,mixed risk factors in 15 children.The results revealed that high-risk neonatal complications were associated with impairment of different language parameters and cognitive abilities(P < 0.05).The presence of prematurity,in relation to other risk factors,increases the risk of language and cognitive delay significantly by 3.9 fold.CONCLUSION Arabic-speaking children aged 2-3 years who were exposed to high-risk conditions in the perinatal period are likely to exhibit delays in the development of language and impairments in cognitive abilities.The most significant risk factor associated with language and cognitive impairments was prematurity. 展开更多

In Content and Language Integrated Learning, one key issue is the differentiation between content area language (discipline-specific language) and everyday language and how the linguistic and competence gap can be bridged. Language is the conveyor of meanings and it functions differently when the context that it is embedded in changes. In everyday language, frequently-encountered objects and concepts are present and the understanding of an idea is supported with abundant contextual clues. However, academic language is, in a sense, de-contextualized, in other words, context-reduced (Cummins, 2000). Notable features of academic language are high density of meanings, high level of formality, different syntactic structures from familiar and simpler everyday language, and discipline-specific terminology also poses great challenges to the comprehension. This paper will examine the differences between everyday language and the language of particular disciplines and the nature of discipline-specific language features. Drawn from the analysis, pedagogical suggestions are presented with reference to the teaching strategies and ways to bridge the gap. In addition, educational implications for CLIL will also be briefly discussed in the final section. 展开更多
