This paper examines in a comparative manner how remembering and forgetting contribute to self-constitution in Walker Percy＇s The Last Gentleman and William Alexander Percy＇s Lanterns on the Levee. In The Last Gentleman, Will Barrett embarks upon a journey from the North to the South in quest of identity. Lanterns on the Levee features a similar identity quest pursued, this time, by an autobiographer who records the very process of this quest rather than representing it by a fictional character. Percy the stoic restores realness to people in a lost world, from whom he derives his self and in whom his self is deeply rooted, by remem- bering the personally significant and good past and forgetting the personally insignificant and evil present. In so doing, he not only asserts his personal identity but continues to construct it in an imaginative way. Will, by contrast, seeks to constitute and ascertain his stoic identity both by attempting to forget the every- dayness of ordinary life and thereby establish a genuine relationship with people and by undertaking the pursuit of a fatherly figure who echoes his tenacious memory of his father. Both Will and Percy, however, may be called what Kierkegaard calls a knight of infinite resignation.

Effects of UV-B radiation on fitness related behaviors of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius

Ozone depletion induced by anthropogenic gases has been increasing the transmission of solar ultraviolet-B radiation(UV-B, 280–315 nm) through the atmosphere, which may impact the fitness of marine invertebrates in intertidal and shallow waters. To our knowledge, however, the responses of fitness related behaviors to UV-B radiation at different intensities have been rarely studied in marine invertebrates. For the first time, the present study investigated the eff ects of exposure of one hour to UV-B radiation at different intensities on foraging behavior, Aristotle's lantern reflex and righting behavior of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius. Exposure of one hour to UV-B radiation at 10 μW/cm^2 significantly reduced foraging behavior. An intensity dependent eff ect of exposure to UV-B radiation was found in the duration of the Aristotle's lantern reflex. Exposure to UV-B radiation at 20 μW/cm^2 for one hour significantly reduced the duration of the Aristotle's lantern reflex, but 10 μW/cm^2 did not. There was no significant diff erence of righting response time among sea urchins exposed to 0, 10 and 20 μW/cm^2 for one hour. To test potential carryover ef fects, the behavioral traits were re-measured three days later. We found significant carryover eff ects of UV-B radiation on foraging time and righting response time, but not on the duration of the Aristotle's lantern reflex. The present study indicates that a brief exposure of one hour to UV-B radiation can significantly aff ect the duration of Aristotle's lantern reflex, righting response time and foraging behavior of a sea urchin, although the immediate impacts and carryover eff ects were highly trait dependent. This study provides new information into the behavioral responses of marine invertebrates to exposure to UV-B radiation. Future studies should be carried out to investigate long-term carryover eff ects of UV-B radiation on behavioral and physiological fitness related traits.

Translation Model Construction of“Geda”as a Partitive in The Lantern Bearer from the Perspective of Cultural Schema Theory

The word“geda”,as a typical example of partitive in Shaanxi local dialect,appears 40 times in Jia Pingwa’s novel Daideng,but with varied translation equivalents in its English version The Lantern Bearer,where this article raised its doubts about how a proper translation of partitive can transmit culture in a more authentic and loyal way.From the perspective of cultural schema theory,this article takes The Lantern Bearer1 as the basis of text analysis to explore the translation strategy of the partitive“geda”in the context of cultural correspondence before relevant translation models are proposed with the purpose to shed light on Shaanxi local literature translation into English.

Analysis of Actual Example for Swedish EGGER Pump's Modification

We imported 23 Swedish EGGER Pumps （ EGGER ： the commercial name of the product） last year. These pumps trip frequently. Every time the pump trips, it means that the workers have to open the pump for cleaning a polymer. By analyzing the packing pump internal structure and discussing the basic reasons of the failure of the pump, we find that our chemical medium is so viscous that some of these pumps are blocked. It is important to cal- culate the pressure value of the flushing water and to determine the available pressure. Apparently, the more the flushing water increases ,the less the pump is blocked by Latex. The methods for fixing it are to change its internal structure and to add an additional cooling（flushing）water throttle plate. The results show that its tripped frequency changes from twice or 3 times per day to once per month. The effect is extending the running cycle of these pumps.

Mode division multiplexing reconstructive spectrometer with an all-fiber photonics lantern

This study presents a high-accuracy,all-fber mode division multiplexing(MDM)reconstructive spectrometer(RS).The MDM was achieved by utilizing a custom-designed 3×1 mode-selective photonics lantern to launch distinct spatial modes into the multimode fber(MMF).This facilitated the information transmission by increasing light scattering processes,thereby encoding the optical spectra more comprehensively into speckle patterns.Spectral resolution of 2 pm and the recovery of 2000 spectral channels were accomplished.Compared to methods employing single-mode excitation and two-mode excitation,the three-mode excitation method reduced the recovered error by 88%and 50%respectively.A resolution enhancement approach based on alternating mode modulation was proposed,reaching the MMF limit for the 3 dB bandwidth of the spectral correlation function.The proof-of-concept study can be further extended to encompass diverse programmable mode excitations.It is not only succinct and highly efcient but also well-suited for a variety of high-accuracy,high-resolution spectral measurement scenarios.

Low-loss,high-purity,and ultrabroadband all-fiber LP_(41)mode converter employing a mode-selective photonic lantern[Invited]

Broadband mode converters are essential devices for space-division and wavelength-division multiplexing systems.There are great challenges in the generation of higher-order modes above the third order with low loss and high mode purity employing all-fiber devices.In this paper,an all-fiber LP_(41)mode converter is proposed and fabricated by tapering a nine-core single-mode fiber bundle.Experimental results indicate that this all-fiber LP_(41)mode converter is low-loss,high-purity,and ultrabroadband.The insertion loss is less than 0.4 dB.The purity of odd LP_(41)at 1310 nm is 95.09%,and the operating bandwidth exceeds 280 nm.

On Reduced Lantern Relations in Mapping Class Groups

Let S be a hyperbolic Riemann surface with a finite area. Let G be the covering group of S acting on the hyperbolic plane H. In this paper, the author studies some algebraic relations in the mapping class group of S for S = S／{a point}. The author shows that the only possible relations between products of two Dehn twists and products of mapping classes determined by two parabolic elements of G are the reduced lantern relations. As a consequence, a partial solution to a problem posed by J. D. McCarthy is obtained.
