[Method] Seven different sugarcane varieties were studied at the seedling stage under drought stress, and the changes of leaf water and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters under stress conditions were detected. [Result] leaf water potential, leaf relative water content and soil relative water content showed a certain amount of internal relationship, the sugarcane varieties that had more tolerant to drought had higher utilization rate of soil water; the correlation analysis and factor analysis suggested that the survival rate at seedling stage under drought stress,Fv/Fm,leaf water potential and relative water content could be used as drought resistance evaluation indicators. [Conclusion] As a relatively independent influencing factor, water potential had dominating effect on drought resistance, and the reliability of Fv/Fm as drought resistance evaluation indicator had been verified.展开更多

In this paper, a three-layer multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN) based prediction system was presented for predicting the leaf population chlorophyll content from the cotton plant images. As the training of this prediction system relied heavily on how well those leaf green pixels were separated from background noises in cotton plant images, a global thresholding algorithm and an omnidirectional scan noise filtering coupled with the hue histogram statistic method were designed for leaf green pixel extraction. With the obtained leaf green pixels, the system training was carried out by applying a back propagation algorithm. The proposed system was tested to predict the chlorophyll content from the cotton plant images. The results using the proposed system were in sound agreement with those obtained by the destructive method. The average prediction relative error for the chlorophyll density (μg cm^-2) in the 17 testing images was 8.41%.展开更多

Hot pepper crops were more affected by light irradiance than by soil moisture and by their interaction during the whole observed periods. Hot pepper attained greatest relative leaf Chl. content (expressed as SPAD value) and photosynthetic activity when cultivated with 30% shade, resulting in the highest plant biological biomass and fruit yield. Although 70% shade improved leaf photosynthetic efficiency (expressed as Fv/Fm or Fv'/Fm'), crops obtained the lowest photosynthetic rate, photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), and non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ). This showed that light irradiance was insufficiency in S70% (70% shade) treatment. The leaf net photosynthetic rates (PN), Fc/Fm, and fruit yield increased gradually as SWC levels increased from 40-55% to 70- 85% FMC, but decreased as SWC was higher than 70-85% FMC. The water consumption increased progressively with SWC levels, but water-use efficiency (WUE) was the highest when soil moisture was 55-70% FMC. Interaction of shade and soil moisture had significant effects on PN and FJFm, but not on other parameters. Under drought stress (40-55% and 55-70% FMC), 30% shade could relieve the droughty damage of crops and improve photosynthetic capacity and WUE, but 70% shade could not, oppositely, aggravate the damage. The positive correlation (r2 =0.72) between leaf PN and fruit yield was existent. This indicated that improvement of leaf photosynthesis would increase potentially marketable yield in hot pepper crops during the full fruit-growing stages. For agricultural purposes, approximately S30% (30% shade) with 70- 85% FMC is suggested to cultivate hot pepper during the fruit growth stage in hot summer months.展开更多

The aim of this study was to exploit varietal difference in A and its correlation with specific leaf weight(SLW). Twelve rice cultivars, including 6 indica and 6 japonica varieties, were pot-grown under two N treatments, low N(LN) and sufficient N(SN). Leaf photosynthesis and related parameters were measured at tillering stage. Compared with LN treatment, A, stomatal conductance(g_s), mesophyll conductance(g_m), leaf N content(N_(area)), and chlorophyll content were significantly improved under SN treatment, while SLW and photosynthetic N use efficiency(PNUE) were generally decreased. Varietal difference in A was positively related to both g_s and g_m, but not related to N_(area). This resulted in a low PNUE in high N_(area) leaves. Varietal difference in PNUE was generally negatively related to SLW. Response of PNUE to N supply varied among different rice cultivars, and interestingly, the decrease in PNUE under SN was negatively related to the decrease in SLW. With a higher N_(area), japonica rice cultivars did not show a higher A than indica rice cultivars because of possession of high-SLW leaves. Therefore, varietal difference in A was not related to N_(area), and SLW can substantially interfere with the correlation between A and N_(area). These findings may provide useful information for rice breeders to maximize A and PNUE, rather than over reliance on N_(area) as an indicator of photosynthetic performance.展开更多

The results obtained in this study show that the dry weight growth and net photosynthetic rate of masson pine seedlings are reduced by exposure to SO_2 at ≥100 ppb. The objective was to assess whether low Ca2+ content and Ca2+/Na+ ratio of leaf tissue or stem tissue determine salinity tolerance in terms of economic yield (kernel yield) in groundnut. It revealed that the varieties, “Binachinabadam-6”, “Binachinabadam-5” and the F1 G2 × G3 were most tolerant based on kernel yield under 8 dS/m and 10 dS/m salinity stresses. These two tolerant varieties and the F1 also showed lower Ca2+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratios in leaf tissue, which indicated lower Ca2+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratio of leaf tissue determined salinity tolerance in terms of kernel yield in Spanish type groundnut. These findings could be applied in future plant breeding applications for screening salt tolerant Spanish type groundnut genotypes.展开更多

We surveyed the composition, delta(13)C values and proline concentration of PFGs in eight different plant communities along a soil moisture gradient. Results show that: (1) PFGs occurred variously in eight steppe communities with different soil moisture status. In wetter habitats, hygromesophytes and hygrophytes were more abundant and accounted for the majority of aboveground biomass, whereas xerophytes and mesoxerophytes became more conspicuous in dryer habitats; (2) the numerical order of the mean delta(13)C values of PFGs is as follows: xerophytes (-26.38parts per thousand) = mesoxerophytes (-26.51parts per thousand) > xeromesophytes (-27.02parts per thousand) > mesophytes (-27.56parts per thousand) = hygromesophytes and hygrophytes (-27.80parts per thousand); (3) xerophytes maintained relative higher delta(13)C values and water use efficiency (WUE) in habitats of different water availability, whereas delta(13)C values of xeromesophytes were more sensitive to change in soil water availability; (4) From xerophytes to hygrophytes, their proline content markedly increased. Significantly positive correlations existed between proline and biomass or delta(13)C values of different water ecological groups.展开更多

We report a potentially better technique of seed-soaking to identify glyphosate-tolerant maize genotypes. The effects of soaking maize seeds in glyphosate solution under controlled conditions were studied on seed germination rate, seedling morphological indices, seedling growth and leaf chlorophyll content. These responses were compared among a glyphosate-tolerant transgenic maize cultivar CC-2, glyphosate-susceptible inbred line Zheng 58(the recurrent parent of CC-2) and hybrid cultivar Zhengdan 1002. The results showed that the germination rate, seedling morphological indices and leaf chlorophyll content of glyphosate-tolerant CC-2 seeds did not change significantly among five different concentrations of glyphosate treatment(0 to 2%). In contrast, germination rates, seedling morphological indices and leaf chlorophyll contents of Zheng 58 and Zhengdan 1002 seeds were significantly negatively affected by exposure to increasing concentrations of glyphosate. The glyphosate-tolerant inbred line CC-2 displayed a strong tolerance to glyphosate after soaking in 0.1 to 2.0% glyphosate solutions, while both the inbred line Zheng 58 and hybrid Zhengdan 1002 were susceptible to glyphosate. The accuracy of the glyphosate-soaking method for screening glyphosate-tolerant maize was confirmed using a field spraying trial.展开更多

These orchards have suffered micro-environmental deterioration and loss of fruit quality because of the closed canopy. Modification of the denselyplanted orchards is a priority in current apple production. Intermediate thinning is a basic technique used to transform densely-planted apple orchards in China. Our goal was to provide theoretical basis for studying the effect of thinning on the efficiency of photosynthetically active radiation(PAR),fruit quality, and yield. We measured leaf area, solar radiation, and leaf air exchange at different tree canopy levels and by fitting relevant photosynthetic models, vertical distribution characteristics of leaf photosynthetic potentials and PAR were analyzed in various levels within canopies in densely-planted and intermediately-thinned orchards. Intermediate thinning significantly improved the radiant environment inside the canopies. PAR distribution within the canopies in the intermediately-thinned orchard was better distributed than in the densely-planted orchards. The invalid space under 30.0% of relative photosynthetically active radiation(PAR_r) was nearly zero in the intermediately-thinned orchard; but minimum PARr was 17.0% and the space under 0.30 of the relative height of the canopy was invalid for photosynthesis in the densely-planted orchard. The leaf photosynthetic efficiency in the intermediately-thinned orchard was improved. Photosynthetic rates(P_n) at the middle and bottom levels of the canopy, respectively, were increased by 7.80% and 10.20% in the intermediately-thinned orchard. Leaf development, which influences photosynthetic potential, was closely related to the surrounding micro-environment, especially light. Leaf photosynthetic potentials were correlated with leaf nitrogen content(N_1) and specific leaf weight(M_1) at various levels of canopies. Compared with the densely-planted orchard, the photosynthetic capacity parameters, such as maximum carboxylation rate(CE_(max)) and maximum electron transfer rate(J_(max)), significantly increased in the intermediately-thinned orchard. Leaf photosynthetic potentials mainly depended on Nl and Nl was closely related to PARr. Leaf photosynthetic potentials and PAR_r can be assessed using spatial distribution patterns of relative leaf nitrogen content(N_(lr)).展开更多

文摘Waterlogging is becoming an obvious constraint on food production due to the frequent occurrence of extremely high-level rainfall events.Leaf water content(LWC)is an important waterlogging indicator, and hyperspectral remote sensing provides a non-destructive,real-time and reliable method to determine LWC.Thus, based on a pot experiment, winter wheat was subjected to different gradients of waterlogging stress at the jointing stage.Leaf hyperspectral data and LWC were collected every 7 days after waterlogging treatment until the winter wheat was mature.Combined with methods such as vegetation index construction, correlation analysis, regression analysis,BP neural network(BPNN),etc.,we found that the effect of waterlogging stress on LWC had the characteristics of hysteresis and all waterlogging stress led to the decrease of LWC.LWC decreased faster under severe stress than under slight stress, but the effect of long-term slight stress was greater than that of short-term severe stress. The sensitive spectral bands of LWC were located in the visible(VIS,400–780 nm)and short-wave infrared(SWIR,1400–2500 nm)regions. The BPNN Model with the original spectrum at 648 nm,the first derivative spectrum at 500 nm,the red edge position(λr),the new vegetation index RVI(437,466),NDVI(437,466)and NDVI´(747,1956)as independent variables was the best model for inverting the LWC of waterlogging in winter wheat(modeling set:R^(2)=0.889,RMSE=0.138;validation set:R^(2)=0.891,RMSE=0.518).These results have important theoretical significance and practical application value for the precise control of waterlogging stress.

文摘Relative leaf chlorophyll (Chl.) content, leaf gas exchange, Chl. fluorescence, plant biological biomass, and fruit yield were evaluated in growing hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) during the fruit-growing stages in hot summer under three shade levels (un-shade, 30% shade, and 70% shade) and four soil water contents (SWC) of 40-55%, 55-70%, 70-85%, and 85- 100% of field moisture capacity (FMC). For agricultural purposes, approximately S30% (30% shade) with 70- 85% FMC is suggested to cultivate hot pepper during the fruit growth stage in hot summer months.

文摘Investigating the effects of ontogenetic stage and leaf age on leaf traits is important for understanding the utilization and distribution of resources in the process of plant growth. However, few studies have been conducted to show how traits and trait-trait relationships change across a range of ontogenetic stage and leaf age for evergreen coniferous species. We divided 67 Pinus koraiensis Sieb.et Zucc.of various sizes(0.3-100 cm diameter at breast height,DBH)into four ontogenetic stages,i.e.,young trees,middle-aged trees, mature trees and over-mature trees, and measured the leaf mass per area(LMA),leaf dry matter content(LDMC),and mass-based leaf nitrogen content(N)and phosphorus content(P)of each leaf age group for each sampled tree.One-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)was used to describe the variation in leaf traits by ontogenetic stage and leaf age.The standardized major axis method was used to explore the effects of ontogenetic stage and leaf age on trait-trait relationships. We found that LMA and LDMC increased significantly and N and P decreased significantly with increases in the ontogenetic stage and leaf age. Most trait-trait relationships were consistent with the leaf economic spectrum(LES)at a global scale.Among them, leaf N content and LDMC showed a significant negative correlation, leaf N and P contents showed a significant positive correlation, and the absolute value of the slopes of the trait-trait relationships showed a gradually increasing trend with an increasing ontogenetic stage.LMA and LDMC showed a significant positive correlation, and the slopes of the trait-trait relationships showed a gradually decreasing trend with leaf age.Additionally, there were no significant relationships between leaf N content and LMA in most groups, which is contrary to the expectation of the LES.Overall,in the early ontogenetic stages and leaf ages, the leaf traits tend to be related to a"low investment-quick returns"resource strategy. In contrast,in the late ontogenetic stages and leaf ages, they tend to be related to a"high investment-slow returns"resource strategy. Our results reflect the optimal allocation of resources in Pinus koraiensis according to its functional needs during tree and leaf ontogeny.

文摘Increasing leaf photosynthesis per area(A) is of great importance to achieve yield further improvement. These findings may provide useful information for rice breeders to maximize A and PNUE, rather than over reliance on N_(area) as an indicator of photosynthetic performance.
文摘The effects of sulfur dioxide(SO_2) on the dry weight growth gas exchange rate and leaf sulfur content of massion pine(Pinus massoniana Lamb. )were investigated. The results obtained in this study show that the dry weight growth and net photosynthetic rate of masson pine seedlings are reduced by exposure to SO_2 at ≥100 ppb. From these results, one of the main causes in the dieback of masson pine forest reported in Chongqing,China may be relatively high concentrations of atmospheric SO_2 in the relevant area.
文摘The study was performed with seven groundnut varieties/genotypes and F1s derived from crossing in all possible combinations without reciprocal among the mentioned varieties/genotypes. These findings could be applied in future plant breeding applications for screening salt tolerant Spanish type groundnut genotypes.

文摘Olive productivity should be improved through stimulating nutrition, particularly under poor fertility soils.Consequently, the objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of applying organic and bio-fertilizers on the physiological growth, yield and fruit quality of olive trees under newly reclaimed poor-fertility sandy soil in an arid environment.During a field experiment carried out at El-Qantara,North Sinai,Egypt over two consecutive seasons(2019-2020 and 2020-2021),olive Kalamata trees were evaluated under three organic fertilizer treatments alone or in combination with three bio-fertilizers treatments.Organic fertilizer was applied as goat manure(16.8 kg/tree/year),or olive pomace(8.5 kg/tree/year)in mid-December of each season vs.untreated trees. The bio-fertilizers were applied as N-fixing bacteria(150 g/tree)was inculated in early March of each season,or amino acid mixture(1.5%)was applied three times,at 70%of full bloom,21 days after full bloom, and a month later in comparison to a non-fertilized trees(control). The cultivar used was Kalamata,a dual-purpose cultivar for oil and table olives whose value increases when processed as table olives. The results indicated that the goat manure followed by olive pomace significantly enhanced photosynthetic pigments(chlorophyll a,b,and carotenoids),leaf mineral contents(N,P,K,Ca,Mg and Fe),tree canopy volume, number of flowers per inflorescence, number of inflorescences per shoot, initial fruit set, fruit retention. For fruit quality, fruit length and width, fruit weight, and total fruit yield was increased compared to the non-fertilized control.Likewise,The bio-fertilizer N-fixing bacteria followed by the amino acid mixture significantly improved all of the aforementioned parameters.Accordingly,it is recommended, both environmentally and economically to utilize organic and bio-fertizers,particularly goat manure combined with N-fixing bacteria,in low-fertility soil to sustain olive production as well as reducing mineral fertilization.
文摘Major plant species in the Xilin River Basin were grouped into six plant functional groups (PFGs) based on their water ecological groups: xerophytes, mesoxerophytes, xeromesophytes, mesophytes, hygromesophytes and hygrophytes. Significantly positive correlations existed between proline and biomass or delta(13)C values of different water ecological groups.

文摘The shortage of information regarding the effects of root damage on forest plants, especially trees and shrubs,is the most critical gap in our knowledge of belowground insect herbivory. This study examines how the tea-leaved willow,Salix phylicifolia, responds to simulated root herbivory and how nutrient availability affects these responses.Hydroponically grown cuttings were used to precisely apply the desired levels of root damage.Root:shoot ratios increased proportionally to the intensity of root damage, whereas specific leaf area, leaf water content and chlorophyll fluorescence were not affected. The removal of 2-64%of roots once in early summer and the removal of 25%of roots three times during the summer did not change biomass production by cuttings. The repeated removal of 50 and 75%of roots decreased shoot biomass and,to a lesser extent, total root production. The tolerance of tea-leaved willow to root damage was greater in low nutrient treatment than in high nutrient treatment, thus supporting the Growth Rate Model.According to this model,in low resource conditions plants do not attain their maximum growth rate and therefore have a higher capacity for regrowth after damage. We conclude that,in the absence of water limitations,tea-leaved willow shows high tolerance to root losses and is unlikely to be affected by realistic levels of root herbivory.

文摘The identification of glyphosate-tolerant maize genotypes by field spraying with glyphosate is time-consuming, costly and requires treatment of a large area. The accuracy of the glyphosate-soaking method for screening glyphosate-tolerant maize was confirmed using a field spraying trial.

文摘The ratio of leaf carotenoid to chlorophyll(Car/Chl)is an indicator of vegetation photosynthesis, development and responses to stress. However, the correlation between Car and Chl,and their overlapping absorption in the visible spectral domain pose a challenge for optical remote sensing of their ratio. This study aims to investigate combinations of vegetation indices(VIs)to minimize the influence of Car-Chl correlation, thus being more sensitive to the variability in the ratio across vegetation species and sites.VIs sensitive to Car and Chl variability were combined into four candidates of combinations, using a simulated dataset from the PROSPECT model. The VI combinations were then tested using six simulated datasets with different Car-Chl correlations, and evaluated against four independent datasets. The ratio of the carotenoid triangle ratio index(CTRI)with the red-edge chlorophyll index(CIred-edge)was found least influenced by the Car-Chl correlation and demonstrated a superior ability for estimating Car/Chl variability.Compared with published VIs and two machine learning algorithms,CTRI/CIred-edge also showed the optimal performance in the fourfield datasets. This new VI combination could be useful to provide insights in spatiotemporal variability in the leaf Car/Chl ratio, applicable for assessing vegetation physiology, phenology, and response to environmental stress.

文摘Sulfur is an essential functional element in leaves, and it plays important roles in regulating plant growth, development and abiotic stress resistance in natural communities. However, there has been limited information on the spatial variation in leaf sulfur content(LSC)and adaptive characters on a large community scale.Sulfur in leaves of 2207 plant species from 80 widespread ecosystems(31 forests,38 grasslands and 11 deserts)in China was measured.One-way analysis of variance with Duncan’s multiple-range tests were used to evaluate the differences in LSC among different plant growth forms and ecosystems. We fitted the relationships of LSC to spatial and climate factors using regression.Structural equation modeling analysis and phylogenetic analysis helped us further explore the main factors of LSC variation.LSC ranged from 0.15 to 48.64 g·kg^(-1),with an average of 2.13±0.04 g·kg^(-1) at the community scale in China. We observed significant spatial variation in LSC among different ecosystems and taxa.Overall,LSC was higher in arid areas and herbs.Furthermore, higher LSC was observed under environments of drought, low temperatures and intense ultraviolet radiation.Temperature, precipitation, radiation, soil sulfur content and aridity jointly regulated LSC,explaining 79%of the spatial variation. However,LSC was not significantly related to phylogeny. Our results demonstrate that LSC plays an important role in plant adaptations to extreme environments and further extend our understanding of the biological function of sulfur from the organ to the community level. These findings highlight the importance of sulfur metabolism for our understanding of the impact of global climate change on plants.

文摘Aims Ecological systems, especially soils, have been recently recognized as an important source of atmospheric nitric oxide(No).However, the study on the contribution of plants to atmospheric No budget is significantly lagged. The specific objectives of this study are to reveal the phylogenetic variation in No emission potential existing in various plant species and find out the possible leaf traits affecting No emission potential. Methods We measured No emission potential, leaf N and C content,C:N ratio, specific leaf area, net photosynthetic rate(Pn)and estimated photosynthetic N use efficiency(PNuE)of 88 plant species.Further investigation of the relationships between No emission potential and leaf traits were performed by simple linear regression analysis and pair-wise correlation coefficients analysis.Important Findingsmajor results are as follows:(1)No emission from plant species exhibited large variations, ranging from 0 to 41.7 nmol m^(−2) h^(−1),and the species frequency distributions of No emission potential could be fitted to a log-normal curve.(2)among 88 species,No emission potential was the highest in Podocarpus macrophyllus, but lowest in Zanthoxylum nitidum and Vernicia montana.(3)No emission potential has strong correlation to leaf N content,Pn and PNuE.The variations in No emission potential among diverse plant species may be closely related to leaf N level and net photosynthetic ability.

文摘Most apple orchards in the apple production districts in China were densely planted with vigorous rootstocks during the 1980 s. Leaf photosynthetic potentials and PAR_r can be assessed using spatial distribution patterns of relative leaf nitrogen content(N_(lr)).

文摘Leaf water content(LWC)of crops is a suitable parameter for evaluation of plant water status and arbuscular mycorrhizal effect on the host plant under drought stress.Remote sensing technology provides an effective avenue to estimate LWC in crops. However, few LWC retrieval models have been developed specifically for the arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculated crops. In this study, soybean with inoculation and non-inoculation treatments were planted under the severe drought, moderate drought and normal irrigation levels. The LWC changes under different treatments at the 30 th,45 th and 64 th day after the inoculation were investigated, and the spectral response characteristics of inoculated and non-inoculated soybean leaves under the three drought stresses were analyzed.Five types of spectral variables/indices including:raw spectral reflectance(R),continuum-removed spectral reflectance(R C),difference vegetation index(DVI),normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)and ratio vegetation index(RVI)were applied to determine the best estimator of LWC.The results indicate that LWC decreased as the aggravating of drought stress levels. However,LWC in inoculated leaves was higher than that in the counterparts under the same drought stress level, and the values of raw reflectance measured at inoculated leaves were lower than the non-inoculated leaves, especially around 1900 nm and 1410 nm.These water spectral features were more evident in the corresponding continuum-removed spectral reflectance. The newly proposed DVI C(2280,1900)index,derived from the continuum-removed spectral reflectance at 2280 nm and the raw spectral reflectance at 1900 nm in DVI type of index, was the most robust for soybean LWC assessment, with R 2 value of 0.72(p<0.01)and root mean square error(RMSE)and mean absolute error(MAE)of 2.12%and 1.75%,respectively.This study provides a means to monitor the mycorrhizal effect on drought-induced crops indirectly and non-destructively.

文摘The radiative transfer model,PROSPECT,has been widely applied for retrieving leaf biochemical traits. However, little work has been conducted to evaluate the stability of the PROSPECT model with consideration of multiple factors(i.e.,spectral resolution,signal-to-noise ratio, plant growth stages, and treatments). This study aims to investigate the stability of the PROSPECT model for retrieving leaf chlorophyll(Chl)content(Cab).Leaf hemispherical reflectance and transmittance of oilseed rape were acquired at different spectral resolutions, noise levels, growth stages, and nitrogen treatments. The Chl content was also measured destructively by using a microplate spectrophotometer. The performance of the PROSPECT model was compared with a commonly used random forest(RF)model. The results showed that the prediction accuracy of PROSPECT and RF models for Cab did not produce significant differences under varied spectral resolutions ranging from 1 to 20 nm.The ranges of the relative root mean square errors(rRMSE)of the PROSPECT and RF models were 12%-13%and 11.70%-12.86%,respectively.However,the performance of both models for leaf Chl retrieval was strongly influenced by the noise level with the rRMSE of 13-15.37%and 12.04%-15.80%for PROSPECT and RF,respectively. For different growth stages, the PROSPECT model had similar prediction accuracies(rRMSE=9.26%-12.41%)to the RF model(rRMSE=9.17%-12.70%).Furthermore,the superiority of the PROSPECT model(rRMSE=10.10%-12.82%)over the RF model(rRMSE=11.81%-15.47%)was prominently observed when tested with plants growth at different nitrogen treatment levels. The results demonstrated that the PROSPECT model has a more stable performance than the RF model for all datasets in this study.
