A Stigmatized Wedding Custom Versus A Positive Representation in Folk Legends: Chinese Naodongfang and Its Gender Troubles

Folk legends depict Naodongfang as an auspicious and positive custom,in contrast to the intellectuals’negative comments found in historical manuscripts concerning Naodongfang.The three types(stories of auspicious and mythical figures who were incarnated as respected emperors and initiated Naodongfang;tales of folk heroes who were brave and courageous enough to fight villains such as bad emperors or demons;and urban legends of everyday people’s experiences),affirm Naodongfang as an essential component of a Chinese wedding.The beliefs and legends underlie the practice of lively and noisy weddings and led to the pervasiveness of Naodongfang that continues until today.Folk legends and their related beliefs speak to the longevity of Naodongfang and suggest its historical and present importance.

Translation of Magic Itemsin League of Legends from English into Chinese:Challenges and Proposed Techniques

Over the past decades,video games have exploded in popularity,as thousands of enchanting games are released every year and millions of people become big fans of video games and this potential market offers plenty of working opportunities for transla?tors,especially for those who major on English to Chinese translation due to China's dense population and millions of players.Howev?er,there are several challenges in terms of translating video games,for example,coined words and ambiguous terms,because most of them exist in merely made-up stories and virtual worlds created by programmers.Though it is challenging to some extent,the presen?tation that I have done on translating magic spells in Harry Pottery and its feedback provide me with insights into the way I process translation of special terms.Hence,this paper will focus on translating magic items in the most popular online game—League of Leg?ends from English to Chinese and the purpose of this paper is trying to find ways to produce a high quality translation.By using differ?ent techniques,the translation need be readable and understandable for e-players in China or it could preserve its original flavor to maintain and attract more fans of this game.This paper will introduce general background information about this game and some magic items.Afterwards,it will point out potential challenges when translating these magic items and apply translation strategies and tech?niques to deal with the difficulties and,in turn,evaluating these approaches.Finally,some thoughts and viable methods for translating magic items in video game field will be surmised.

The martial arts novel is not only a significant kind of Chinese popular fictions but also a novel category unique to Chi⁃nese culture.Legends of the Condor Heroes is the representative one which was once adapted into nationally popular TV series,boasting a widespread domestic mass base.Therefore,the book may become a key to the door of foreign readers’interest in Chi⁃nese martial arts culture.This thesis takes the latest English version of Legends of the Condor Heroes as the research object,focus⁃ing on six specific translation methods from the perspectives of semantic translation and communicative translation.The six transla⁃tion methods discussed in the thesis include:(1)literal translation;(2)combination of transliteration and literal translation;(3)liter⁃al translation with necessary notes;(4)free translation;(5)combination of transliteration and free translation;(6)creative transla⁃tion.

As an im portant scholar of contemporary sinology，Sarah A lla n ’s research on Chinese ancient h is to ry，on the basis of continuing the tradition of historical studies and archaeology， used Claude Levi - Strauss5 theory and method of structuralism for reference，and opened a new path for western Sinological research. H er study of ancient legends initiated wide interest in the circles of sinology ，and was considered to be both special and very innovative.

Legends of the dashboard: an empirical evaluation of split and joint layout designs for geovisual analytics interfaces

Geodashboards are often designed with explanatory elements guiding users.These elements(e.g.legends or annotations)need to be carefully designed to mitigate split attention or information integration issues.In this paper,we report expert interviews followed by a controlled experiment where we compare two interface designs with a focus on the split attention effect:(1)a multiple-legend layout with explanatory elements located next to each view,and(2)a single-legend layout with all explanatory elements gathered in one place.Different legend layouts did not affect the performance,but affected user satisfaction.75%of the participants preferred the multiple-legend layout,and rated it with a higher usability score,mainly attributing this preference to the proximity of legend elements to the view of interest.Eye tracking data strongly and clearly verifies that participants indeed make use of the proximity:With the single-legend,the majority of eye-movement transitions were between the single-legend and the closest view to the legend,whereas with multiple-legend participants have shorter and more frequent legend visits,as well as more transitions between legends and views.Taken together,the design lesson we learned from this experiment can be summarized as‘split the legend elements,but make it close to the explained elements’.

Ouyang Qiansen is a writer from Guizhou who is quite influential in the Chinese literary circles of the new century.He has worked hard to rejuvenate the Chinese nation's literary tradition with modern thinking.This is reflected in the fact that he includes modern geological expertise in his novels,portraying geographical scenery with poetic language,thereby forming a unique narrative style based on modern knowledge and renewing the "natural science"narrative tradition of China's ancient novels.Moreover,he pays special attention to myriad unusual events and people throughout Guizhou's history and in reality,and creates typical literary Guizhou characters of all types whereby he revives the"legend"narrative tradition based on historical records or biographies and is typical of ancient Chinese novels.Both the geography-based"natural science"narrative and the people-based legend"narrative are merged into Ouyang's local chroniclestyled novel pedigree of Guizhou.By creatively transforming the narrative tradition of local chronicles and local chronicle-style novels of ancient China,in his literary creations,Ouyang manages to revive and reconstruct the Guizhou spirit,which serves as the local expertise and culture.

From the perspective of narratology, this paper explores the contemporary inheritance of the medical legacy of Zhang Zhongjing's practice medicine in the clinic. The Myth of the Vagina Dentata: Archetypal Manifestations of the Terrible Mother

This article has the objective of studying the myth of the vagina dentata.Based on an exploratory review of the literature and on clinical experience,the present article discusses this myth through manifestations of the archetype of the Terrible Mother and its manifestations in the contemporaneous clinic in the context of Analytical Psychology.The presence of the myth will first be considered in the context of cultural anthropology and then specifically on the basis of Neumann’s Analytical Psychology.In this article the author shows how the manifestation of the Terrible Mother is related to the archetype of the Great Mother,represented by horrendous figures such as serpents,gorgons,and the Egyptian Mother Goddess.The Terrible Mother has a devouring aspect and,in some cultures,is often intertwined with the symbol of the vagina dentata.Later,in the clinical context,these archetypical manifestations will be associated to intense degrees of anxiety associated with the anima in male patients,feeding intense degrees of aggressiveness in the shades of individuals of the male sex.In conclusion,the author emphasises the importance of manifestations of the Terrible Mother as depicted in individual symbols,in view of the process of individuation in clinical settings.
