This article is an attempt to explore the theoretical basis behind vocabulary teaching through pictures and discusses the position of linguistic theory in language teaching. While vocabulary has been considered as one aspect of language and it is basic to language study, the teaching of vocabulary includes some of the following characteristics. They are, among other things, sound production, spelling, grammar, classes, and semantics. The discussion is limited to the semantic aspect of vocabulary, especially the theory of semantics the teacher relies on. Within the study of meaning, a great many theories are recognized; these include Triangle-Semantics Theory, Componential Analysis Theory, and Theory of Language Use, e.g., Speech Acts, Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics, and Psycholinguistics. The focus in this-article, however, is on the Triangle-Semantics Theory. This article is supported with some sense data gained from teachers of English. The information is gathered by means of interview and observation in the classroom. Data analysis and interpretation of findings indicate that most teachers do not realize that they are relying on semantic theory when teaching vocabulary, the Triangle-Semantics Theory.展开更多

Catford is a world-renowned British linguist and translation theorist, and also an outstanding representative of the linguistic school of translation. His famous work A linguistic theory of translation was first published by Oxford University Press in 1965, and republished in 1967. It was among the list of the series of language and linguistic studies of Oxford University. This essay attempts to interpret this great book in five aspects, namely, definition of translation, types of translation, translation equivalence, transference, and limits of translatability, and tries to probe into the positive impact of its theories on the development of translation theory and its limitations.展开更多

The issue of unpredictability is obviously a problem for English learners. Making things worse, many phrasal verbs are polysemous. For one thing, one phrasal verb may have multiple meanings; for another, several phrasal verbs may have the same or similar meanings. While the fast development of cognitive linguistics theory provides a new perspective for the study of English polysemous phrasal verbs. Researchers apply cognitive linguistic theory into second language acquisition and find that the multiple senses of phrasal verbs are actually systematic and motivated. The present study summarizes studies of polysemous phrasal verbs from the perspective of traditional approaches and cognitive approaches as well as the empirical studies based on it and analyzes the shortage of traditional approaches on phrasal verbs. Lastly, this paper illustrates some drawbacks of empirical study based on the assessment of Boers (2011) and points out some suggestions on further studies.展开更多

This essay briefly discusses some major linguistic theories that contribute most to modern language teaching. It tells us to teach them how to fish, rather than give them a fish a day.展开更多
