Chinese Language Teacher Competency: A Literature Review for a Study Series

Teaching is a special profession with complex pedagogical procedures. It prepares qualified workers and citizens who are expected to yield values and bring benefits to the society, the nation, and the whole world (Nessipbayeva, 2012). This makes the profession require well-qualified teachers. In light of this, teachers must have (and be able to exercise) a broad range of competency array every day in an especially complex environment so that students can realize their full academic potential with the help of teachers (Jackson, 1990). The more competent a teacher is, the better students' achievements will be (Johansson, Myrberg,& Rosen, 2015). It is urgent for us to know how to prepare competent teachers.

Case Studies from Literature and Movies: A Best Practice for Learning

Pedagogy today has a greater need to focus on relevance for students between course content and the real world of student life and work.Educators across disciplines have found a challenge to engage students in learning activities that carry value for them.The case study is a pedagogical tool that can connect student learning to real life examples.Narratives from books and movies present characters and situations that provide opportunity for student analysis within course concepts and student application to both personal and professional experience.Students enter example experiences that they might encounter and gain insight of potential response.This qualitative study examined graduate course work with case studies in Life-span Development,Multi-cultural Counseling,and Traumatology in which students reviewed books and movies with case examples aligned with course content.The instructor provided structured analysis format in which students were required to reflect on both personal and professional application relevant to the focus of the course.Student responses indicated perception of strong value for insight and application gained from the case studies and also high perception of use of these as tools in their own future work as educators or mental health professionals.

Interpretation,Narrative and Study of“Disaster”Scenarios in Western Literature

Disaster runs through the whole process of human development.As a common topic faced by mankind anywhere and anytime,disaster has become the object of consideration and writing by writers in every country.This paper first identifies the etymological meaning of“disaster”in Western language and culture,and then examines the main representations of Western“disaster”literature in terms of literary genre,developing trajectory and thematic characteristics.Finally,the paper summarizes the researches of Western“disaster”literature,and provide references for worldwide study of“disaster”literature.

A Virgin Land to be Cultivated:On the Aesthetics of Folk Literature and Art

In terms of the aesthetic of folk literature and art,most researchers explain it drawing on general aesthetic theory,but pay less attention to the specific context and logic of individual cases.Folk aesthetics is deeply rooted in folk life,including local nature,village culture,farming life and folk belief.These folklore factors constitute the“local logic”,which regulates and influences folk aesthetic culture.The hidden“grammar”must be found in the folk life of the masses with a view to explaining the“essence”of folk aesthetics effectively.The concept of folk literature and art is understood in two different ways:One interprets it as“study of art and literature of folks”,regarding folk as a modifier of study of art and literature.Folk literature and art is regarded as the research object and the discipline is defined according to literary standard.This concept is from the perspective of literary studies,emphasizing that“folk literature and art is a special study of literature and art”.The other interprets it as“study of folk literature and art”,treating literature and art among the folks as the research object and defining the discipline in accordance with cultural standard.This concept is from the perspective of cultural studies.

The Current Situation and Counter Measures of Compilation of English Literature Textbooks in the Context of New Liberal Arts

With the promulgation of the“National Quality Standards for Undergraduate Teaching of Foreign Languages and Literatures in General Institutions of Higher Education”and“Teaching Guidelines”in 2018,the humanistic attributes of English majors and the important position of literature in foreign language learning are emphasized.Nowadays,the English literature curriculum is facing the problems of marginalization,reduction of class hours,simplification of curriculum and so on.Then in the context of the new liberal arts,it provides a new way to break through the dilemma of the literature curriculum.The study has collected the use of teaching materials of British and American literature courses in some colleges and universities across the country.Based on the survey results,the compilation of teaching materials in the new era should consider how to adapt to students’deep learning,autonomous learning,cross learning and research-based learning to provide guidance and support.The diversity of learning requires us to break the monotony of textbook compilation,show diversity and complement each other.

Advances in Domestic and Foreign Studies about Banana in 2013-2014 from the Perspective of Literature

Scientific literature retrieval analysis plays an important role in promoting the scientific research and technological progress. Based on the literature included by SCI-EXPANDED and EI database,this paper compared and analyzed the main research literatures of bananas both at home and abroad in 2013-2014. It compared the advances in domestic and foreign studies about the banana from main counties,number of papers included,main disciplines and fields,to provide certain guidance and references for development direction of domestic studies of banana in China.

A Systematic Review of the Literature on the Relationships between Chronic Diseases and Food Insecurity

Background: The association between food insecurity (FI) and obesity is now so well documented that scholars have dubbed it the “‘new’ food insecurity” and cited it as a leading cause of increased chronic disease (CD) risk. Here, the chain of causality is assumed to be FI → obesity → CD. However, this model overlooks the possible direct associations between FI and CD independent of obesity. Aim: This study assessed the literature on relationships between FI and CD. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of electronic databases. Selection criteria were designed to elicit studies that assessed FI and CD using a measure of CD other than obesity. Results: Fifty-one articles met the inclusion criteria. Forty-five studies (87%) reported a statistically significant association between FI and CD, but only 15 adjusted for obesity. The association was less consistent for asthma and dyslipidemia than for diabetes, hypertension, and other dietrelated CDs, and most were conducted in the USA or Canada. Conclusion: There is a body of literature documenting relationships between FI and CD, but it is heavily biased toward Western nations, ecological study designs, and type 2 diabetes as the CD of focus. A small subset of the literature controls for BMI, demonstrating that a portion of the FI-CD relationship cannot be fully explained by obesity. Possible direct pathways linking FI and CD include systematic effects of poverty that accompanies FI, micronutrient deficiencies, and environmental exposure to toxins;however, exploration of these alternative pathways is limited by study designs that fail to include obesity as a control variable.

A Study on Applications and Case Studies Regarding Bluetooth Technology for Travel Time Measurement

Bluetooth technology emerged over twenty years ago and has continuously improved throughout the years to meet diverse and complex applications. Initially invented to replace the need for physical data cables, Bluetooth offers users a quick and easy way to share data files over a wireless network. Traffic engineers and transportation engineering researchers have utilized the potential opportunities that exist with Bluetooth and have implemented this technology into traffic monitoring techniques. To gain a better understanding of Bluetooth sensors and how they work, a comprehensive literature search was conducted. Twenty-five articles were studied regarding case studies of Bluetooth sensor implementation for travel time measurement. Besides reviewing the literature and previous case studies, three new case studies in the State of Delaware, USA, were also conducted and carefully analyzed. The benefits and drawbacks associated with Bluetooth technology for travel time measurements have been identified in this paper. The overall conclusion of the authors is Bluetooth alone and by itself is not a proper technology for travel time measurements. More studies need to be conducted on the accuracy and overall application, before one can confidently utilize the Bluetooth technology for travel time measurements.

＂New＂ Translations of Japanese Literature： Socio-cultural Impacts on the Japanese Mind

In terms of translation theory today, the essential discussions of ＂otherness＂, coupled with the agenda of bilateral approaches to its untranslatability, are much more intense than ever. The stereotypical images of Japan as something quite alien yet enchanting in Japanese literature, in The Tale of Genji for instance, are drastically different from those in modem novels, where the experience of conflicts with the West in the course of modernization could not be ignored. Shusaku Endo＇s Silence for example, paradoxically questions the translatability of Christianity in the historical context of the Japanese mind. By reading some translated texts of Japanese literature, we come to be aware of the essential factors of＂otherness＂ inherent in Japanese culture and language which, in some socio-cultural ways, has had an interesting effect on Japanese minds. With the growing interest in ＂world literature,＂ ＂otherness＂ and ＂untranslatability＂ illuminated in the translations of Japanese literature offer a new perspective with which we can re-think our sense of history of modernization on the one hand; and re-evaluate the uniqueness of Japanese language on the other. The remarkable influence of translators whose mother tongue is not Japanese, but who have an excellent command of the language, enables a new Japanese culture to emerge. This is evident in the works of Arthur Binard, an American poet and translator, who enthusiastically criticizes the Japanese policy of atomic energy in his translations of the Japanese poems after World War II, and in the very inspiring essays on Japanese by Roger Pulvers, an Australian writer and playwright who won prizes for his translations of Kenji Miyazawa. Along with such new trend of translations of Japanese literature, how it affects the Japanese mind will be discussed.

From the standpoint of Kant’s philosophy,Donald Davidson for the first time put forward the concept of psychological event,which is different from the general understanding,and regarded action and reason,which had always been regarded as separate links,as the same event with causal continuity.From the perspective of analytical philosophy,this provides a key academic basis for deepening the study of the nature and role of“foresight”in the occurrence of art,the dialectical characteristics of“against event”formed by the continuity of artistic singularity and daily life,and the unity of“cognition”and“practice”in artistic activities.

Cristina Campo, the Aristocrat of Modern Literature: On Autobiographical Instance in Her Literary Work

In the present article,the attention is focused on autorepresentational image that can be derived from Cristina Campo’s literary language,while analyzing at the same time its genesis,given finalities and reception.It is what can be deduced in filigrain from essayistic-critical writings in The Unforgivable Ones(Gli imperdonabili)and Under a False Name(Sotto falso nome),as well as from collections of letters and illuminating lyrical motifs,based on which it will be demonstrated that analogous themes are associated to various literary genres on grounds of principle of inter-genre contamination.By illustrating the founding postulates of autopoetic reflections,the intention is to ulteriorly determine their collocation within the frame of cultural history.To veiled autobiographism contributes pseudonymical practice,as well as subsequent stylistic devices,through which modernistic aspects are highlighted.The autobiographical narration in The Golden Walnut(La noce d’oro),short story-fairy tale of aesthetic timbre frequently infused with figural tropism,comprises a literary mixture of rievocation and mythography,relying on anthropological premises that are speculatively articulated.

China's study on coal mining beneath surface buildings——state-of-the-art and developing trend

Extensive coal deposits are sterilized beneath surface buildings in China. The paper elaborates on the present status of the study on mining beneath surface buildings from several aspects involving the techniques for reducing ground subsidence and deformation and the measures for protecting buildings. Following that, it is pointed out that, in the future, more efforts should be directed forwards the following aspects: the laws governing the ground movement; the techniques for constructing anti-deformation buildings; coal-bed gasification and protection of buildings; grouting of the overlying strata with bed separation phenomena; and the method for evaluating the stability of the ground above a worked-out area.

Huo Yuanjia Culture and Wushu School, located in Tianjin, the birthplace of wushu （Chinese martial arts） master Huo Yuanjia, has produced many wushu champions. As part of the cultural exchange program between China and Africa, the school provides a three-month training course. Starting in January, this course consists of 30 Zimbabwean students who predominantly ply their trade as teachers of physical education.

Kieran Dolin is Senior Honorary Research Fellow in English and Literary Studies at the University of Western Australia.He is one of the acclaimed critics of Victorian literary-legal studies and has published widely in this field.During her visit to the University of Western Australia,Wu Sufen conducted an interview with Dolin on such topics as the legal centralism in the Law and Literature movement,the potential of such movement,and Chinese scholars’questions and concerns about this movement,together with the uniqueness of Victorian literary-legal studies.Dolin emphasizes that literature and law are both components of social and cultural practice,so studies on the relations between law and literature can not only reveal social concerns reflected in literary works,but also present the historical development of law and the accordingly shifting narrative patterns that literary works have undergone.
