The most characteristic cardiovascular abnormality in HES is endomyocardial fibrosis, initially described in 1936 by Loffler, who called it "fibroplastic parietal endocarditis with blood eosinophilia." The overall prognosis of patients with Loffler endocarditis is very poor.
