Newspapers can preserve vast amount of first-hand historical information for research.They are reliable and valuable primary sources for studies on politics,economy,society,humanities,science and technology,culture,fo...Newspapers can preserve vast amount of first-hand historical information for research.They are reliable and valuable primary sources for studies on politics,economy,society,humanities,science and technology,culture,folkways and customs of a country for a specific period of history.Accordingly,these authors in this paper support that a Chinese Newspaper Digital Repository(CNDR)initiative led by National Library of China(NLC)be firmly established and put into operation in quick order.These authors' conviction and assertion are made only after they have given a careful study and analysis of the problems of current newspaper preservation methods,including print newspapers preservation,preserving newspapers by microfilming technology,and digital publication of newspapers.These authors also have taken into consideration of the legal issues involved about such an undertaking.Based on the review of the efforts and achievements on long-term preservation of newspapers home and abroad,these authors have critiqued the technical scheme of the NLC' Chinese Newspaper Digital Repository,including such important factors as system design,metadata schema,system structure,and the achievements of this project in Phase I.Finally,these authors have recommended that a collaborative operation mechanism and also a new comprehensive service paradigm in the realm of information delivery be established in CNDR's overall strategic planning.展开更多

For years, magnetic media based solutions, such as tape and hard disk drive （HDD） based archive systems, monopolize the data archiving marke...Long-term digital preservation is an important issue in data storage area. For years, magnetic media based solutions, such as tape and hard disk drive （HDD） based archive systems, monopolize the data archiving market due to their high capacity and low cost. However, in the era of big data, rapidly increasing volume, velocity, and variety of data set bring numerous challenges to the archive systems in various aspects, such as capacity, cost, performance, reliability, power consumption, and so on. In recent years, high capacity optical media, such as bluray discs （BDs） and holographic discs, emerge with the revival of optical storage. Due to the natural simple construction of the optical media, the archive systems based on those optical media, e.g., BD library, demonstrate attractive properties, such as cost per bit, reliability, power consumption, and so on, thus become feasible options in long-term digital preservation. In this paper, we reviewed and compared both the magnetic and optical media based solutions for long-term digital preservation, followed by a summarization on techniques to improve the optical media based archive system.展开更多

There are more than 800,000 units of audiovisual documents in the archive. The main laws regulating the activity of Lithuanian Central State Archive and related to audiovisual archiving are the Law on Documents and Archives of Lithuanian Republic, the Law of Cinema of Lithuanian Republic, and the Law on Copyright and Related Rights of Lithuanian Republic. There are four big collections of audiovisual documents in the Lithuanian Central State Archive--films, photo documents, sound recordings, and video recordings. The Archive＇s specialists have a large experience in the field of physical treatment and preservation of analogue audiovisual documents. Lithuanian Central State Archive digitizes audiovisual documents seeking the balance between long time preservation and nowadays access. Since May, 2010 till April 2013, Lithuanian Central State Archive implemented the project--Lithuanian documentaries on the Internet. During the project the Archives digitized and transferred to the Internet 1,000 titles of Lithuanian documentaries, created in the period 1919-1961. Lithuanian Central State Archive wants to popularize its collections, so various international projects are participated in.展开更多
