Different contents of Ni(0.3wt.%to 1.2wt.%)were added to the QT400-18L ductile iron to investigate the effect of Ni addition on the impact toughness of cast ductile irons at low temperatures. The impact toughnesses of the samples at room and low temperatures were tested. The microstructures and fractographs were observed. Results show that with the increase of Ni addition there is a general trend of refinement of the ferrite matrix while the nodule density shows no obvious change. When the Ni content is 0.7wt.%,the matrix structure is the refined ferrite with a very small fraction(about 2%)of pearlite near the eutectic cell boundaries. When the Ni content is further increased, the fraction of pearlite increases significantly and reaches more than 5%when 1.2wt.%Ni is added. The impact toughness at room temperature increases as the content of Ni increases from 0.3 wt.%to 0.7 wt.%,but decreases as the Ni content further increases to 1.2wt.%due to the increase of pearlite fraction. The maximum value of the impact work is 18.5 J at room temperature with 0.7wt.%Ni addition. The average value of the impact work is still more than 13 J even at-30℃.In addition, the fracture mechanism changes from ductile manner to brittleness as the testing temperature decreases from 20℃to-60℃. 展开更多

The mechanical and wear properties of CFRP laminate were investigated using a method of cycling low velocity impact, to study the trend and mechanism of impact resistance of the CFRP laminate under repeated impact during its service process. The interface responses of CFRP laminate under di erent impact kinetic energy during the cycling impact process were studied were studied experimentally, such as impact contact duration, deformation and energy absorption. The worn surface morphologies were observed through optical microscopy and a 3?D surface profiler and the cross?sectional morphologies were observed through SEM to investigate the mechanism of impact material dam?age. Based on a single?degree?of?freedom damping vibration model, the normal contact sti ness and contact damp?ing of the material in di erent wear stages were calculated. It shows the failure process of CFRP laminate damaged by accumulated absorption energy under the cycling impact of di erent initial kinetic energy. The results indicate that the sti ness and damping coe cients will change at di erent impact velocities or cycle numbers. The damage mechanism of CFRP laminates under cycling low kinetic energy is delamination. After repeated experiments, it was found that there was a threshold value for the accumulated absorption energy before the failure of the CFRP laminate. 展开更多

Present paper proposes a methodology by combining finite element method with smoothed particle hydrodynamics to simulate the response of textile reinforced concrete(TRC)slabs under low velocity impact loading. For the constitutive modelling in the finite element method, the concrete damaged plasticity model was employed to the cementitious binder of TRC and Von-Mises criterion was used for the textile reinforcement.Strain dependent smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)was used to assess the damage and failure pattern of TRC slabs.Numerical simulation was carried out on TRC slabs with two different volume fraction of glass textile reinforcement to predict the energy absorption and damage by coupling finite element method with SPH.Parametric studies were also conducted for simulating the effect of number of textile layers in TRC under impact. It is concluded that the proposed methodology well predicts the damage in TRC slabs at various locations. The results were also analysed using two parameter Weibull distribution and the impact failure strength is presented in terms of reliability function. The results indicated that the Weibull distribution allows describing the failure in terms of reliability and safety limits. 展开更多

High strength low alloy steel with 16 mm thickness was welded by using high power laser hybrid welding. Microstrueture was characterized by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy ( SEM ) , transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). Low temperature impact toughness was estimated by using Charpy V-notch impact samples selected from the upper part and the lower part at the same heterogeneous joint. Results show that the low temperature impact absorbed energies of weld metal are (202,180,165 J) of upper samples and (178,145,160 J) of lower samples, respectively. All of them increase compared to base metal. The embrittlement of HAZ does not occur. Weld metal primarily consists of refined carbide free bainite and a little granular bainite since laser hybrid welding owns the character of low heat input. Retained austenite constituent film "locates among the lath structure of bainitie ferrite. Refined bainitic ferrite lath and retained austenite constituent film provide better low temperature impact toughness compared to base metal. 展开更多

Natural and geological environmental conditions have an important impact on the planning and construction of sponge cities. This paper analyzes geological factors that influence the usage of natural sponge bodies, taking the Shuanghe lake district of Zhengzhou airport zone as an example. An evaluation system with seven factors has been established and the weights of these factors are determined using the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)method.Overlay analysis is then carried out on all factors using GIS to evaluate the geological suitability of the construction of the sponge city. The results show that geologically suitable area for city construction in Shuanghe lake district accounts for 12.3%,relatively suitable area accounts for 76.1%,and relatively unsuitable area accounts for 11.6%.For suitable and relatively suitable areas,we should make full use of the advantages of surface infiltration, vadose zone transportation and aquifer storage to build a sponge city infrastructure with geological engineering as the main component, supplemented by engineering measures such as surface water storage and drainage, and jointly establish a sustainable urban hydrological cycle. For less suitable areas, artificial rain and flood control works, such as roof garden, should be considered. The findings of this paper can serve as an important reference for sponge city planning and construction not only in the research area but also in other regions with similar geological conditions. 展开更多

Many Low Impact Developments (LIDs) have recently been developed as a sustainable integrated strategy for managing the quantity and quality of stormwater and surrounding amenities. Previous research showed that green roof is one of the most promising LIDs for slowing down rainwater, controlling rainwater volume, and enhancing rainwater quality by filtering and leaching contaminants from the substrate. However, there is no guideline for green roof design in Malaysia. Hence, Investigating the viability of using green roofs to manage stormwater and address flash flood hazards is urgently necessary. This study used the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) to evaluate the effectiveness of green roof in managing stormwater and improving rainwater quality. The selected study area is the multistory car park (MSCP) rooftop at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. Nine green roof models with different configurations were created. Results revealed that the optimum design of a green roof is 100 mm of berm height, 150 mm of soil thickness, and 50 mm of drainage mat thickness. With the ability to reduce runoff generation by 26.73%, reduce TSS by 89.75%, TP by 93.07%, TN by 93.16%, and improved BOD by 81.33%. However, pH values dropped as low as 5.933 and became more acidic due to the substrates in green roof. These findings demonstrated that green roofs improve water quality, able to temporarily store excess rainfall and it is very promising and sustainable tool in managing stormwater. 展开更多

Many cities are adopting low impact development(LID)technologies(a type of nature-based solution)to sustainably manage urban stormwater in future climates.LIDs,such as bioretention cells, green roofs, and permeable pavements, are developed and applied at small-scales in urban and peri-urban settings. There is an interest in the large-scale implementation of these technologies, and therefore assessing their performance in future climates,or conversely, their potential for mitigating the impacts of climate change, can be valuable evidence in support of stormwater management planning. This paper provides a literature review of the studies conducted that examine LID function in future climates. The review found that most studies focus on LID performance at over 5 km2scales,which is quite a bit larger than traditional LID sizes. Most paper used statistical downscaling methods to simulate precipitation at the scale of the modelled LID.The computer model used to model LIDs was predominantly SWMM or some hybrid version of SWMM.The literature contains examples of both vegetated and unvegetated LIDs being assessed and numerous studies show mitigation of peak flows and total volumes to high levels in even the most extreme climates(characterized by increasing rainfall intensity, higher temperatures, and greater number of dry days in the inter-event period). However, all the studies recognized the uncertainty in the projections with greatest uncertainty in the LID’s ability to mitigate storm water quality.Interestingly, many of the studies did not recognize the impact of applying a model intended for small-scale processes at a much larger scale for which it is not intended. To explore the ramifications of scale when modelling LIDs in future climates, this paper provides a simple case study of a large catchment on Vancouver Island in British Columbia,Canada, using the Shannon Diversity Index.PCSWMM is used in conjunction with providing regional climates for impacts studies(PRECIS)regional climate model data to determine the relationship between catchment hydrology(with and without LIDs)and the information loss due to PCSWMM’s representation of spatial heterogeneity. The model is applied to five nested catchments ranging from 3 to 51 km2and with an RCP4.5 future climate to generate peak flows and total volumes in 2022,and for the period of 2020–2029.The case study demonstrates that the science behind the LID model within PC stormwater management model(PCSWMM)is too simple to capture appropriate levels of heterogeneity needed at larger-scale implementations. The model actually manufactures artificial levels of diversity due to its landuse representation, which is constant for every scale. The modelling exercise demonstrated that a simple linear expression for projected precipitation vs.catchment area would provide comparable estimates to PCSWMM.The study found that due to the spatial representation in PCSWMM for landuse, soil data and slope, slope(an important factor in determining peak flowrates)had the highest level of information loss followed by soil type and then landuse. As the research scale increased, the normalized information loss index(NILI)value for landuse exhibited the greatest information loss as the catchments scaled up.The NILI values before and after LID implementation in the model showed an inverse trend with the predicted LID mitigating performance. 展开更多

Experimental studies on the compressive behavior of composite laminates after low velocity impact was carried out with two test methods. One is SACMA Standard, and the other is a small dimensional specimen test method. Impact damage distributions, compressive failure process after impact, quasi static indentation and compression of laminates with a hole were brought into comparison between these two test methods. The results showed that there is a great difference between these two test methods. Compressive behavior of laminates after impact varies with different test methods. Residual compressive strength of laminates after low velocity impact measured with SACMA Standard can reflect stiffness properties of composite resins more wholely than that measured with the other method can do. Small dimensional specimen test method should be improved on as an experimental standard of compressive strength after impact. \{ 展开更多

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM)is the process of collecting, interpreting and analysing data from structures in order to determine its health status and the remaining life span.Composite materials have been extensively use in recent years in several industries with the aim at reducing the total weight of structures while improving their mechanical properties. However, composite materials are prone to develop damage when subjected to low to medium impacts(i.e.1-10 m/s and 11-30 m/s respectively).Hence, the need to use SHM techniques to detect damage at the incipient initiation in composite materials is of high importance.Despite the availability of several SHM methods for the damage identification in composite structures,no single technique has proven suitable for all circumstances. It must be noted that the amount of techniques available nowadays is too extensive to be comprehensively reviewed in a single paper. Therefore, the focus will be on techniques that can serve as a starting point for studies focusing on damage detection, localisation, assessment and prognosis on certain kinds of structures. Thus, the line of thought behind the search and the structure of this review is a result of objectives beyond the scope of the paper itself.Nevertheless,it was considered that, once the above was understood,an updated synopsis such as this could also be useful for other researchers in the same field. 展开更多

The woven basalt fiber composites(WBFC) and the unidirectional [0°/90°/45°/-45°]s basalt fiber composites(UBFC) were prepared by hot-pressing.Three-point bending test, low velocity impact test, and ballistic test were performed to the prepared composites. After the tests, the specimens were recovered and analyzed for micromorphology.Three-point bending tests show that both the bending strength and stiffness of the WBFC surpass those of the UBFC.Low velocity impact test results show that the low velocity impact resistance to hemispherical impactor of the UBFC is higher than that of the WBFC,but the low velocity impact resistance to sharp impactor of the UBFC is lower than that of the WBFC.For the ballistic test,it can be found that the ballistic property of the UBFC is higher than that of the WBFC. After the tests, microscopic analysis of the specimens was applied, and their failure mechanism was discussed. The main failure modes of the UBFC are delamination and fibers breakage under the above loading conditions while the main failure mode of the WBFC is fibers breakage.Although delamination damage can be found in the WBFC under the above loading conditions, the degree of delamination is far less than that of the UBFC. 展开更多

Cities are currently confronted with many urban problems, such as water shortages, water quality pollution, floods, and the loss of habitats of aquatic organisms, and badly in need of a more comprehensive solution. In this context, the concept of "sponge city" is proposed. This paper, based on the theory of sponge city and low impact development, elaborated the origin, development, connotation, and construction method of "sponge city" concept. In this paper, the urban design scheme of Renbei District in Chengdu was taken for example to analyze the geographical environment and climate characteristics of Chengdu and explain the formation and verification of the scheme. It is considered that the "sponge city" is different from the traditional urban infrastructure. It is essentially an ecological approach. Its core is to build a cross-scale urban water ecological infrastructure to comprehensively solve the prominent water-related problems of urban and rural areas in China. 展开更多

Within the last decade, substantial progress has been achieved in the management of centralized water reticulation in Zambia. Characterized by diversified fiscal resourcing, concurrent institutional restructuring and introduction of new players in water governance, the water sector is set to achieve improved reliability on sustainable grounds. However, the threat of underground water pollution resulting from increased urbanization besides the unreliable energy sector presents new challenges for the current urban water. In effect, urban areas are affected by chronic water rationing creating public stress and insecurity which impacts domestic development. While the course of development has meant investment in the extension and expansion of water infrastructure in Zambia, alternative urban water resources are being sought to address challenges of traditional water systems globally. This paper therefore attempts to make a case for the modernization of Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RRWH) as an augmenting water resource in the Zambian urban housing sector. Here—in, it is identified as a Low Impact Development technology within the Integrated Urban Water Management framework currently being forged by local water. Based on a desktop literature survey and online questionnaire survey, an argument to support the development of RRWH in Zambia was developed. While literature survey results revealed evidence of economic loss and a growing compromise to public health resulting from inconsistent water supply in the study area of Lusaka city, the online questionnaire survey depicted significant domestic stress due to erratic water supply. Results confirmed that at one time residents observed an average of eight hours of power blackouts which effectively induced water disruption forcing homeowners to engage in various water storage methods which in turn are costly on domestic time, health and finances. A retrospective discussion based on both survey results attempts to present benefits and opportunities of urban RRWH to water sector stakeholders providing recommendations towards the mainstreaming of the practice in Zambia. 展开更多

Continuous urbanization over the last few years has led to the increase in impervious surfaces and stormwater runoff.Low Impact Development(LID)is currently receiving increased attention as a promising strategy for surface runoff management. To analyze the performance of LID practices for surface runoff management,a longterm hydrological modeling from 2001 to 2015 along with a cost-effectiveness analysis were carried out on a campus in Dresden,Germany.Seven LID practices and six precipitation scenarios were designed and simulated in a Storm Water Management Model(SWMM).A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted by calculating the lifecycle costs and runoff removal rate of LID practices. Results demonstrated that the LID practices significantly contributed to surface runoff mitigation in the study area. The LID performance was primarily affected by the length of the precipitation scenarios and LID implementing schemes. The runoff removal rate of the LID practices fluctuated significantly when the rainfall scenario was shorter than 12 months. When the rainfall scenario exceeded 1 year the effects on the runoff removal rate was constant. The combination of an infiltration trench, permeable pavement, and rain barrel(IT+PP+RB),was the best runoff control capacity with a removal rate ranging from 23.2% to 27.4%.Whereas,the rain barrel was the most cost-effective LID option with a costeffectiveness(C/E)ratio ranged from 0.34 to 0.41.The modeling method was improved in this study by conducting long-term hydrological simulations with different durations rather than short-term simulations with single storms. In general, the methods and results of this study provided additional improvements and guidance for decision-making process regarding the implementation of appropriate LID practices. 展开更多
