The bending and free vibration of porous functionally graded(PFG)beams resting on elastic foundations are analyzed. The material features of the PFG beam are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to the volume fraction of components. The foundation medium is also considered to be linear, homogeneous, and isotropic, and modeled using the Winkler-Pasternak law.The hyperbolic shear deformation theory is applied for the kinematic relations, and the equations of motion are obtained using the Hamilton’s principle. An analytical solution is presented accordingly, assuming that the PFG beam is simply supported.Comparisons with the open literature are implemented to verify the validity of such a formulation. The effects of the elastic foundations, porosity volume percentage and span-to-depth ratio are finally discussed in detail. 展开更多

The bending and free vibration of a rotating sandwich cylindrical shell are analyzed with the consideration of the nanocomposite core and piezoelectric layers subjected to thermal and magnetic fields by use of the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) of shells. The governing equations of motion and the corresponding boundary conditions are established through the variational method and the Maxwell equation. The closed-form solutions of the rotating sandwich cylindrical shell are obtained. The effects of geometrical parameters, volume fractions of carbon nanotubes, applied voltages on the inner and outer piezoelectric layers, and magnetic and thermal fields on the natural frequency, critical angular velocity, and deflection of the sandwich cylindrical shell are investigated. The critical angular velocity of the nanocomposite sandwich cylindrical shell is obtained. The results show that the mechanical properties, e.g., Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient, for the carbon nanotube and matrix are functions of temperature, and the magnitude of the critical angular velocity can be adjusted by changing the applied voltage. 展开更多

Demand for large vibrating screen is huge in the mineral processing industry. As bending and random vibration are not considered in a traditional design method for beam structures of a large vibrating screen, fatigue damage occurs frequently to affect the screening performance. This work aims to conduct a systematic mechanics analysis of the beam structures and improve the design method. Total motion of a beam structure in screening process can be decomposed into the traditional followed rigid translation(FRT), bending vibration(BV) and axial linear-distributed random rigid translation(ALRRT) excited by the side-plates. When treated as a generalized single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) elastic system analytically, the BV can be solved by the Rayleigh's method. Stochastic analysis for random process is conducted for the detailed ALRRT calculation. Expressions for the mechanics property, namely, the shearing force and bending-moment with respect to BV and ALRRT, are derived, respectively. Experimental and numerical investigations demonstrate that the largest BV exists at the beam center and can be nearly ignored in comparison with the FRT during a simplified engineering design. With the BV and FRT considered, the mechanics property accords well with the practical situation with the maximum error of 6.33%, which is less than that obtained by traditional method. 展开更多

The nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rubbing rotor system was studied with a mathematical model established with the eccentricity and interaction between bending and torsional vibrations taken into consideration. The nonlinear vibrational response of a rubbing rotor was analyzed using numerical integral, spectroscopic analysis and Poince mapping method, which made it possible to have better understanding of the vibrational characteristics of partial rubbing and complete circular rubbing rotors. The numerical results reveal the response of torsional vibration mainly takes a form of superchronous motion, and its frequency decreases as the rotational speed increases when partial rubbing occurs, and the response of torsional vibration is synchronous when complete circular rubbing occurs. The comparison of the dynamics of rubbing rotors with and without the interaction between bending and torsional vibrations shows the interaction between bending and torsional vibrations advances the rotational speed, at which the response of bending vibration changes from a synchronous motion into a quasi periodic motion, and the interaction between bending and torsional vibrations reduces stability of the rubbing rotor. 展开更多

The bending and free vibrational behaviors of functionally graded(FG)cylindrical beams with radially and axially varying material inhomogeneities are investigated.Based on a high-order cylindrical beam model, where the shear deformation and rotary inertia are both considered, the two coupled governing differential motion equations for the deflection and rotation are established. The analytical bending solutions for various boundary conditions are derived. In the vibrational analysis of FG cylindrical beams, the two governing equations are firstly changed to a single equation by means of an auxiliary function, and then the vibration mode is expanded into shifted Chebyshev polynomials.Numerical examples are given to investigate the effects of the material gradient indices on the deflections, the stress distributions, and the eigenfrequencies of the cylindrical beams, respectively.By comparing the obtained numerical results with those obtained by the three-dimensional(3D)elasticity theory and the Timoshenko beam theory, the effectiveness of the present approach is verified. 展开更多

Based on the modified couple-stress theory, the three-dimensional(3D)bending deformation and vibration responses of simply-supported and multilayered twodimensional(2D)decagonal quasicrystal(QC)nanoplates are investigated. The surface loading is assumed to be applied on the top surface in the bending analysis, the tractionfree boundary conditions on both the top and bottom surfaces of the nanoplates are used in the free vibration analysis, and a harmonic concentrated point loading is applied on the top surfaces of the nanoplates in the harmonic response analysis. The general solutions of the extended displacement and traction vectors for the homogeneous QC nanoplates are derived by solving the eigenvalue problem reduced from the final governing equations of motion with the modified couple-stress effect.By utilizing the propagator matrix method, the analytical solutions of the displacements of bending deformation for the phonon and phason fields, the natural frequency of free vibration, and the displacements of the harmonic responses of the phonon and phason fields are obtained.Numerical examples are illustrated to show the effects of the quasiperiodic direction, the material length scale parameter, and the the stacking sequence of the nanoplates on the bending deformation and vibration responses of two sandwich nanoplates made of QC and crystal materials. 展开更多

The rotor with bending faults that occurrs on the rotating machinery usually vibrates seriously. This paper investigates to apply the active balancing device on a flexible rotor with bending faults to solve the vibration problem. Two problems are studied by finite element method firstly: Where the balance actuator is fixed on the shaft and how much the balancing capacity of the active balancing device is needed. The experiment is then carried out on the test rig, which consists of a flexible rotor with bending faults. The test results indicate that the bending rotor peak vibration response can be decreased from 550~m to 40~tm below by using the active balancing device. The peak vibration response decreases approximately by 93 %. The synchronous vibration due to the rotor bending faults can be controlled effectively by using ac- tive balancing device. The active balancing device is especially adapted to solve the problem caused by thermal distortion with time-variation and randomness, which is varied with working conditions, thus it has good practical value in practice. 展开更多

The paper is dedicated to the development of the theory of orthotropic thick plates with consideration of internal forces, moments and bimoments. The equations of motion of a plate are described by two systems of six equations. New equations of motion of the plate and the boundary conditions relative to displacements, forces, moments, and bimoments are given. As an example, the problems of free and forced oscillations of a thick plate are considered under the effect of sinusoidal periodic load. The problem is solved by Finite Difference Method. Eigenfrequencies of the plate are determined, numeric maximum values of displacements, forces and moments of the plate are obtained depending on the frequency of external force. It is shown that when the value of the frequency of external effect approaches the eigenfrequency, there occurs an increase in displacement, force and moment values;that testifies a gradual transition of the motion of plate points into the resonant mode. 展开更多

This paper examines a computer program developed to analyze the vibration of rotating machineries based on theories of vibration and multibody dynamics (MBD). Bending vibration problems of rotating machineries have generally been categorized as either linear or nonlinear. Linear problems can be formulated by standard methods and nonlinear problems can be formulated by MBD methods. In our study, nonlinear problems are treated by the use of a general-purpose computer program, RecurDyn (RD). In the program we developed, rotor bending vibration analysis (RotB) structural properties such as shafts, rotating rotary disks, unbalanced masses and foundation structures are modeled as multibody elements. Also, nonlinearities such as contact, non-symmetrical shaft effects, bearing characteristics, nonlinear restoring and damping characteristics in the bearings are taken into account. The computational results demonstrate the validity of RotB. 展开更多

In this paper,a multiscale model is developed for the mass functionally graded(FG)beam-fluid system to investigate its static and dynamic responses based on 3D printed porous beam free vibration tests, which are determined by two aspects. At the microstructural level, the gradient variation is realized by arbitrary distribution of matrix pores, and the effective moduli under specific distribution are obtained using the micromechanics homogenization theory. In the meantime,at the structural level, the mechanical responses of FG porous beams subjected to mass loading are considered in a static fluid environment. Then, the explicit expressions of local finite-element(FE)expressions corresponding to the static and dynamic responses are given in the appendices. The present results are validated against numerical and experimental results from the literature and mechanical tests of 3D printed structures, with good agreement generally obtained, giving credence to the present model. On this basis,a comprehensive parametric study is carried out, with a particular focus on the effects of boundary conditions, fluid density, and slenderness ratio on the bending and vibration of FG beams with several different gradations. 展开更多

Finite element analysis(FEA) and modal test are main methods to give the first-order vertical bending vibration frequency of train carbody at present, but they are inefficiency and waste plenty of time. Based on Timoshenko beam theory, the bending deformation, moment of inertia and shear deformation are considered. Carbody is divided into some parts with the same length, and it's stiffness is calculated with series principle, it's cross section area, moment of inertia and shear shape coefficient is equivalent by segment length, and the fimal corrected first-order vertical bending vibration frequency analytical formula is deduced. There are 6 simple carbodies and 1 real carbody as examples to test the formula, all analysis frequencies are very close to their FEA frequencies, and especially for the real carbody, the error between analysis and experiment frequency is 0.75%. Based on the analytic formula, sensitivity analysis of the real carbody's design parameters is done, and some main parameters are found. The series principle of carbody stiffness is introduced into Timoshenko beam theory to deduce a formula, which can estimate the first-order vertical bending vibration frequency of carbody quickly without traditional FEA method and provide a reference to design engineers. 展开更多

The problem of chatter vibration is associated with adverse consequences that often lead to tool impairment and poor surface finished in a workpiece, and thus, controlling or suppressing chatter vibrations is of great significance to improve machining quality. In this paper, a workpiece and an actuator dynamics are considered in modeling and controller design. A proportional-integral controller(PI) is presented to control and actively damp the chatter vibration of a workpiece in the milling process. The controller is chosen on the basis of its highly stable output and a smaller amount of steady-state error. The controller is realized using analog operational amplifier circuit. The work has contributed to planning a novel approach that addresses the problem of chatter vibration in spite of technical hitches in modeling and controller design. The method can also lead to considerable reduction in vibrations and can be beneficial in industries in term of cost reduction and energy saving. The application of this method is verified using active damping device actuator(ADD) in the milling of steel. 展开更多

A new wavelet finite element method(WFEM)is constructed in this paper and two elements for bending and free vibration problems of a stiffened plate are analyzed.By means of generalized potential energy function and virtual work principle, the formulations of the bending and free vibration problems of the stiffened plate are derived separately. Then, the scaling functions of the B-spline wavelet on the interval(BSWI)are introduced to discrete the solving field variables instead of conventional polynomial interpolation. Finally, the corresponding two problems can be resolved following the traditional finite element frame. There are some advantages of the constructed elements in structural analysis.Due to the excellent features of the wavelet, such as multi-scale and localization characteristics, and the excellent numerical approximation property of the BSWI,the precise and efficient analysis can be achieved.Besides, transformation matrix is used to translate the meaningless wavelet coefficients into physical space, thus the resolving process is simplified. In order to verify the superiority of the constructed method in stiffened plate analysis, several numerical examples are given in the end. 展开更多

To determine their vibration characteristics, this paper applied a mobility power flow method. Firstly, the L-shaped plate was divided into two substructures to simplify analysis. The coupled bending moment was then deduced by applying a continuous vibration property on the common edge. Next, the response on any point of the plate and the input and transmitted power flow formulas were calculated. Numerical simulations showed the distribution of the coupled bending moment and the response of the whole structure. The validity of this method was verified by the SEA approach. 展开更多

The main purpose of this paper is to present numerical results of static bending and free vibration of functionally graded porous(FGP) variable-thickness plates by using an edge-based smoothed finite element method(ES-FEM) associate with the mixed interpolation of tensorial components technique for the three-node triangular element(MITC3), so-called ES-MITC3. This ES-MITC3 element is performed to eliminate the shear locking problem and to enhance the accuracy of the existing MITC3 element. In the ES-MITC3 element, the stiffness matrices are obtained by using the strain smoothing technique over the smoothing domains formed by two adjacent MITC3 triangular elements sharing an edge. Materials of the plate are FGP with a power-law index(k) and maximum porosity distributions(U) in the forms of cosine functions. The influences of some geometric parameters, material properties on static bending, and natural frequency of the FGP variable-thickness plates are examined in detail. 展开更多

The pipe-soil interactions at shoulders can significantly affect the vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of free-spanning pipes in the subsea. In this paper, the seabed soil reacting force on the pipe is directly calculated with a nonlinear hysteretic soil model. For the VIV in the middle span, a classic van der Pol wake oscillator is adopted. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the vibration equations of the pipe are obtained which are different in the middle span and at the two end shoulders. The static configuration of the pipe is firstly calculated and then the VIV is simulated. The present model is validated with the comparisons of VIV experiment, pipe-soil interaction experiment and the simulation results of VIV of free-spanning pipes in which the seabed soil is modelled with spring-dashpots. With the present model, the influence of seabed soil on the VIV of a free-spanning pipe is analyzed. The parametric studies show that when the seabed soil has a larger suction area, the pipe vibrates with smaller bending stresses and is safer. While with the increase of the shear strength of the seabed soil, the bending stresses increase and the pipe faces more danger. 展开更多

The dynamic behaviors of a horizontal piping structure with an elbow due to the two-phase flow excitation are experimentally investigated. The effects of flow patterns and superficial velocities on the pressure pulsations and vibration responses are evaluated in detail.A strong partition coupling algorithm is used to calculate the flow-induced vibration(FIV)responses of the pipe, and the theoretical values agree well with the experimental results. It is found that the lateral and axial vibration responses of the bend pipe are related to the momentum flux of the two-phase flow, and the vibration amplitudes of the pipe increase with an increase in the liquid mass flux. The vertical vibration responses are strongly affected by the flow pattern, and the maximum response occurs in the transition region from the slug flow to the bubbly flow. Moreover, the standard deviation(STD)amplitudes of the pipe vibration in three directions increase with an increase in the gas flux for both the slug and bubbly flows. The blockage of liquid slugs at the elbow section is found to strengthen the vibration amplitude of the bend pipe, and the water-blocking phenomenon disappears as the superficial gas velocity increases. 展开更多
